Barren Island is an island part of the Indian Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It lies about 138 km (86 mi) northeast of the territory’s capital, Port Blair. In South Asia, along a chain of volcanoes from Sumatra to Myanmar, it is the only active volcano. The Island is around three kilometers wide and has two-kilometer wide caldera. It has large areas of a barren landscape. It is uninhabited by humans, though it has a small population of goats. 

History Of Barren Island

The first volcano eruption as per historical record was in the year 1787. Again in the years 1991 and 1994, the volcano erupted and smoke continued for months. Since then, Barren Island has seen many eruptions once or twice almost every year. The latest eruption was recorded in the year 2018.

Barren Island comes under the restricted zone and if one wants to reach the Island, permission from the Forest Department of Andaman must be taken. Night stay is not allowed at Barren Island, hence one can plan an early morning trip to the island which starts at 3 or 4 a.m. Tourists generally travel through ships and get the whole enthralling feeling of the island. From Have-lock Island, it takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach Barren Island. One gets to see the captivating view of the Island and the active volcano from the ferry. The Island can be visited by chartered boats after taking permission from the Forest Department. Day tours on private charters are also possible and get an aerial view of the active volcano.

In addition, snorkeling can also be done during the trip. Plus, it’s one of the most popular places in the world for scuba diving. Barren Island is reputed to be among the world’s top scuba diving destinations. Major attractions here are the crystal clear visibility,  For a clearer vision of the volcano, it is suggested to visit Barren Island from November to February.

Another volcanic island in Andaman and Nicobar is Narcondam Island, which is classified as a dormant volcano by the Geological Survey of India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another island famous for a volcanic eruption is Baratang Island for mud volcanoes.
