Overview
In the western part of the island country of Mauritius, the biggest national park, the Black River Gorges National Park is located. It is the largest protected forest of Mauritius offering over 50 km of trails, the National Park covers 2% of the total landmass of the island country.
Once the park was used as a hunting ground but in 1994, scientists identified endemic bird species and flowering plants on this site, since then the site has been given the status of a national park and protects the pristine rain forests of the country. The national park is rich in biodiversity and contains rare species of birds, plants, and animals. Currently, 700 species of indigenous plants are found in this national park, but some of them have been destroyed by the introduction of foreign plant species.

About 37 kilometres from the national capital Port Louis, the national park is located. Private and local buses and taxis are available frequently from the Airport to the park entrance. Tourists can book private cars, minibuses, and vans too from all the main cities of Mauritius to the Black River Gorges National Park either online or with the help of the hotel staff. One can reach via a rented cab by following the M2 highway in just 1 hour. The park is a great spot for nature lovers. Generally, it takes around 3 to 4 hours to explore the rich environs of the park. The minimum age for visitors is set to 10 years and above.

Entry Fees for Black River Gorges National Park for the Maps is 50 Mauritian Rupees and the trail fees start from 1200 Mauritian Rupees. Black River Gorges National Park experiences relatively mild temperatures as compared to the rest of the humid island, as it is located in the inner hilly region of Mauritius. The ideal time to visit the park is September through January. The park is open from Monday to Sunday around 7:00 am – 4:00 pm.
