A Feast Amidst the Underwater Kingdom

When someone utters the word ‘Maldives’ the first image that crosses anyone’s mind is that of clear blue waters. Imagine an elaborate spread of mouthwatering food amidst those waters in the company of your loved ones and of course with adorable underwater pals. Sounds like it’s right out of a fairytale right? Well not so much, because the Maldives offers you a range of underwater restaurants to choose from and you would definitely not want to miss an experience of this nature. Although one might think that the independent island country of Maldives has nothing much to offer other than a couple of water sports, you would be pleasantly surprised to know the magnitude of treasures this island holds.

There are an array of underwater restaurants in the Maldives, the most renowned ones among them being:

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant

This is a world-class and one of the most prominent underwater restaurants located in the Conrad Maldives Rangali Resort. Apart from the breathtaking all-glass setup, it offers delicious lunch and dinner menus. The Maldivian lobster is a must-try when you visit this restaurant and do not miss the mid-morning cocktail that you can savour here.

Subsix

Located in the Niyama Private Islands, this restaurant is literally paradise under the water. With anemone shaped chairs and the dramatic entry into this restaurant through a spiral of stairs brace yourselves for delicious banquets and wine experiences. This place is also known for its glow parties, so if you’re lucky, you can get to be a part of it.

5.8 Undersea Restaurant

This place is a showstopper in the range of underwater restaurants since the setup is ideal especially for couples with a romantic ambiance. If you are a lover of vegan food, this restaurant is the perfect place to be as they offer a variety of vegan menus to choose from.

Some of the other unmissable underwater restaurants include The Sea Restaurant and M6m at Ozen by Atmosphere which is all known for exotic seafood cuisine and fine dining experience.

How to reach these restaurants

The ideal and most common way to reach these restaurants is by travelling via seaplane to the seaplane lounges of the different island resorts. A seaplane transfer is also the quickest way to reach this place and it offers a unique experience by itself as for the first leg of the journey you are on the water at the beginning of the ride, but at the end of it, you go underwater to your restaurant. Quite an experience right?

The other mode of transfer is by domestic flight from Male International Airport to an airport on the island, followed by a speedboat transfer to the resort. This is also a unique experience as you get to be in no man’s land for a good amount of time until you reach the resort. Quite a pleasant experience especially if you are on your honeymoon.

But be aware that the wait for the seaplane or speedboat transfer takes time and you will have to wait until other tourists arrive before you depart to your island. But once you reach the resort and dine at the underwater restaurant, you will definitely feel it was worth the wait.

Timings and the entry fee

This is an aspect that every visitor should be prepared for. The underwater restaurant experience does not come cheap and the minimum amount you should be prepared to shell out is approximately INR 6000 per head. The timings of the underwater restaurants generally are from 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm typically meaning that you can look forward to mostly lunch and dinner here.

With that said, the underwater restaurant is worth the money and it will surely be an experience of a lifetime and one wouldn’t want to leave the beautiful island of Maldives without visiting this treasure.
