Come October, God’s Own Country to welcome tourists!

Kerala, the jewel of the Malabar Coast was under strict lockdown for the past few months. But here’s some good news for all tourists who love God’s Own Country! Starting from October, Kerala will be welcoming tourists into the state. Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Co-Operation, Tourism and Devaswom confirmed that Kerala will welcome tourists into their state from next month. So brace yourselves, and get ready to soak in the tranquillity of Kerala’s backwaters!

How will safety be ensured in Kerala?

Although the number of cases in the state is rising constantly, the government has said that safety will be ensured at all costs. The Kerala Tourism Department has prepared a detailed plan with appropriate SOPs. According to Mr Surendran from the department, “The plan includes highlighting the importance of wellness and Ayurveda for immunity. The file has been presented to the chief minister and health department for their advice.”

How has it impacted the state?

Tourism is one of the major revenue contributors to the state and as a result, Kerala is known to increase the National GDP as well. A number of homestays and hotels had to bear the brunt of the pandemic and faced severe losses this year. Kerala, being the hub of Ayurveda lost a lot of revenue there as well due to reduced contact being made mandatory. Ayurvedic spas and especially local tour operators suffered majorly during the nationwide lockdown.

In a bid to safeguard all their stakeholders, the Confederation of Kerala Tourism Industry (CKTI) had also written to the state to ensure that tourism is allowed with all safety precautions in place. The upcoming development will prove to be a huge sigh of relief for all those seeking respite from the lockdown and more importantly for the stakeholders. Although the Kerala government does not have a concrete date in mind, the state will surely open up for tourists in the month of October. This is of course, after all, SOPs have been adhered to and safety measures are in place.
