History of Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

The origin of this wonderful garden was in the year 1913 on 10th June. Before that Harold Pearson came to South Africa in 1903 as a Professor of Botany at the South African College. He knew how important it was to build a botanical garden in Cape Town so he set about achieving that goal.

In 1911 Neville Pillans, a young botanist and enthusiastic gardener came to pay a visit to Pearson as he too had the same vision about Kirstenbosch and knew the place really well. He showed Pearson a land and after their examination, Pearson decided that “this was the place”.The gardens display various kinds of species of plants, all of which come from various areas of the country, including the savannahs, fynbos, etc. The land was given to the government by Cecil John Rhodes and was created into botanical gardens later.
