10 most scenic train journeys to take in Switzerland

It’s necessary that you choose a train that provides you with the best facilities, whose staff are friendly, and takes you through the best scenic destinations. So, we have collected the 10 most scenic train journeys to take in Switzerland for you to find the one that suits you.

1. The Bernina Express

This express connects Chur to Poschiavo in Switzerland, and Tirano in Italy by traversing the Swiss Engadin Alps, the Bernina Express accentuates astonishing views from its panoramic, reddish wagons. The two central chains on the Bernina Express route – the Bernina line and the Albula line – were together proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 2008. The Bernina line through this area is a stunning four-hour voyage across 196 bridges, through 55 caverns and across the incredible Bernina Pass at 7,391 feet above sea level.

This iconic voyage proceeds to be one of the most prominent in the nation.

2. Cogwheel Railway to Mount Pilatus

The cogwheel railway to Mount Pilatus in Switzerland shows off the record of the ‘Steepest Cogwheel Railway in the World.’ The 30-minute trip starts up in Alpnachstad and has a typical slope of 35%. The Cogwheel Railway can be tracked in May and November, while at different moments the top can be entered via an amazing aerial gondola and cableway.

At the height, you’ll discover the historic Pilatus Kulm Hotel and diner where you can relish refreshments, or discover one of the several walking tracks with extraordinary views of the surrounding region.

3. The Golden Pass Line

The Golden Pass Line adjoins the centre of Switzerland with the beaches of Lake Geneva. This stunning voyage oversees past eight lakes, passages through six distinct cantons (the Swiss interpretation of states), traverses three mountain passes and links two language areas. And it delivers roughly a gazillion snapshot shots.

4. Voralpen Express

The Voralpen Express, which deciphers as “Pre-Alpine Express”, commutes between St.Gallen and Lucerne. In contrast to the other train rides, the Voralpen Express is the least touristy one.

It doesn’t arrive with elegant vista windows and no cheerful singer is pinpointing what viaduct you just travelled. Certainly, that’s not a reason to skip riding this train.

5. Glacier Express

This glorious Swiss Alps train ride is remembered as one of the most elegant and promising train passages in Europe, so it’s no surprise it’s made my list. End to end, it fetches you between the swishy ski inns of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, halting in a diversity of ends like Andermatt and Chur along the path.

From the beginning to end, you’re staring at a tortoise-like sluggish passage of about 8 hours, assuring that it does certainly deserve its crown of “the slowest express caravan in the world”.

6. Gotthard Panorama Express

Incorporating excursions by rail and boat, this 182km voyage starts up in Lugano, in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking south. The Gotthard Panorama Express (you can only purchase this locally) intertwines its journey north towards Bellinzona, where three UNESCO World Heritage palaces shield its unforgettable centre. The train then accelerates through the earth’s lengthiest and widest rail tunnel, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, out towards Giornico, splotch with chestnut forests and vineyards.

Do take a vacation in Flüelen, where we propose a boat excursion out on Lake Uri, reckoned to be the motherland of the Swiss country before 1291. And then gently cruise on towards Lake Lucerne.

7. Jungfrau Railway to Jungfrau Mountain

The famous Jungfrau railway line carries tourists to Europe’s tallest railway site, a whopping 3,453 metres above sea level. The snow-capped Jungfrau Mountain is sandwiched between the enormous cliffs of the Monch and Eiger Mountains, and a portion of the Jungfrau railway line subways through these two peaks, with stunning views through windows carefully engraved into the mountainside.

The mountain ridge accentuates a frost statue museum and the chance to take a stroll on a glacier, as well as a diner and what is assumed to be the earth’s biggest chocolate store. On the way around down the peak, the path tumbles through the town of Lauterbrunnen and shows off beautiful falls views.

8. Brienz Rothorn Bahn

The Brienz Rothorn Bahn is one of the considerably dramatic train rides in Switzerland. Beginning in the charming village of Brienz, not remote from Interlaken, the extraordinary steam railway chugs its path up the Rothorn mountain to the symposium at 2,350 meters above sea level.

Not only is the Brienz Rothorn Bahn a steam-driven receptacle railroad, but it is also unusual in that the machine propels the wagons relatively than heaves them!

The trail operates from Wilderswil, close to Interlaken, to the Schynige Platte perspective at 1420 meters above sea level.

This conventional cogwheel railroad is the oldest in the country, and passengers were initially taken by steam train when it unfolded in 1893.

10. Jungfraujoch Scenic Train Ride

In the Bernese Alps, the Jungfraujoch is a glacial harness on the Aletsch Glacier that attaches the Jungfrau and Mönch mountains (both are mountains over 4000 m high). You can find Jungfraujoch at 3,466 m above sea level. This extraordinary area is a fraction of the Jungfrau-Aletsch region and is discovered on the barrier between Bern and Valais.

Travellers have been accessing the Jungfraujoch by train since 1912 by wandering to the Jungfraujoch railway depot, which at 3,454 meters (11,332 ft) is the tallest railway site in Europe.
