The Best Places to Visit in Provence, France

Provence is known as one of the most beautiful regions of France. Its beautiful nature attracts most tourists, but it’s the overall ambiance and way of life that get them to come back. The lifestyle is slow and rural and in a way, it’s like stepping into the past.

The best part of visiting Provence is stepping into the lifestyle of small towns and villages that aren’t really known as tourist destinations.  The best way to explore them is in your own car out of any pre-determined schedule. Make sure to learn how to get international driving license before planning your trip, and you’ll get the most out of the experience.

Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence is a traditional Provence town. The streets are lined with trees, historic squares can be found on every corner, and there’s a long history going back to ancient Rome. The center boulevard, Cours Mirabeau is the main attraction of the city.

While you’re exploring the town make sure to check out Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur and Musée Granet, a fine art museum featuring works of some of the world’s greatest artists ranging through a variety of styles.

Avignon

Avignon is the city to visit if you care about the history of the region and the way it impacted the whole continent. It was the city of Popes, during the time the papacy was removed from Rome. The palace of the popes was built in the 14th century and it’s a UNESCO heritage site.

Beyond it, there’s also a gallery of fine arts. It features the works of Giovanni Bellini, Sandro Botticelli, and Vittore Carpaccio, as well as many others. The city is also home to two lovely churches and an intact bridge saved from the middle ages.

Saint-Tropez

Saint Tropez is known for its glamor and glitz. It’s the city of the secluded elite, that you visit in order to enjoy the scenery coming from Monaco and to shop in its ridiculously expensive shops. Yachts line the shoreline and every high-end brand you can imagine has a shop there, but it’s still an old and rustic town.

It’s also a place for those who want to experience some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There are both private and public beaches depending on your budget and your need for privacy. Hikers will also enjoy the beautiful scenery and pristine paths on which to enjoy them.

Marseilles

Marseilles is a port town and that’s noticeable in its architecture, aesthetic, and style. There’s an urban and multicultural bent to it as it often happens to busy towns that play a big role in the local economy.  Start your exploration with Le Panier, a historic district with a unique Arab look and feel.

The overall ambiance is beautiful and relaxing since it’s a tourist resort that attracts with its landscape and shoreline. Don’t visit without experiencing the deep blue waters and the seafood for which the city is known as much as it is for its rich history.
