History of Rijksmuseum Museum

The Rijksmuseum building was completed and opened in 1885 offering space to 224 pieces. During the beginning of the Second World War, a large number of the art collection was brought to safety vaults situated in the underground passages in Maastricht located in South of Netherlands. These artworks were displayed in Rijksmuseum when the war ended and when it was safe to display the pieces again. Through the years, the building has gone through multiple renovations but was realised it lacked modern facilities and capacity to be a highly ranked museum to welcome visitors from all over the world. The final restoration took almost a decade to restore the Rijksmuseum to its original style and reopened in 2013.

Rijksmuseum Collection

The Rijksmuseum exhibits more than 8000 pieces of art now with collections of the Dutch paintings from 1500s to 1900s resting the main focus on 17th Century known as the Dutch Golder Age. 2019 is celebrated as the Year of Rembrandt and the Golden Age. The Rijksmuseum dived into their archives and resurfaced their complete collections from Rembrandt. This vast collection was showcased in the first half of 2019 conducting a Rembrandt themed event at the Rijksmuseum.

Rijksmuseum Opening Hours

Opening hours: Open all days from 9:00 to 17:00 including Christmas day.

Time blocks are for two hours to view the museum – 9 – 11, 11 – 13, 13 – 15 en 15 – 17h.

Rijksmuseum is usually quieter before 11:00 and after 15:30. The quieter days are Tuesday and Wednesday
