Sri Lanka announces free visa on arrival for citizens of 30 nations

Earlier this Thursday, the tourism ministry of Sri Lanka announced free visa on arrival for citizens of 30 nationalities.

In a recent move to increase tourism in the country, Sri Lanka has planned to roll out free visa on arrival for tourists from Thailand, the US, the UK, the EU, Australia, South Korea, Canada, and Singapore.

Starting from May 1, visitors can obtain a free visa on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport and this will help them save an average of US$20-40 which is otherwise payable. The free visa on arrival will be available for a period of 6 months and there are also plans to increase it further.

“We will start granting a six-month free visa period from 1 May for selected countries during our lean period to boost tourist arrivals”. – Amaratunga, Tourism Development Minister of Sri Lanka.

While tourism is already on an upswing in Sri Lanka, the option of free visa on arrival is believed to bring more revenue even during the lean months.
