The Tale Of The Montmartre

The Russian army obtained the hill during the Battle of Paris in 1814. Vineyards and gardens were spread unevenly in the hill on its slopes. It was then annexed by the city of Paris on January 1 of 1860. The hill was popular for its windmills, vineyards, stone quarries and gypsum mines. During the mid half of the 19th century, cafes, cabarets and dancing halls rose over the hill making it a popular destination. The construction of the Sacré Cœur Basilica took from 1876 to 1919.

By the 19th century, the hill became the primary hub for painting with the upcoming of great painters such as Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Degas, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Pissarro, Renoir, Steinlen, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh among several others who either lived here or creating their masterpieces here.
