Here’s what food around the globe was like in 2024: Travelers’ top picks

Last two years were one hell of a ride! From Cheetos sandwiches to rainbow doughnuts, food has seen crazy spin-offs and diy’s this year. The amount of crazy the millennials added to it only kept adding up. With newer and newer foods getting thrown to fame on a daily basis, it’s time we realise that this is a great time to be alive, at least for foodies to say the least. Also, they were the years that fired up food as an essential element of travel. The hashtags #foodporn, #travelfood, #foodstagram, #wanderlust, #vacay have found good significance in our lives now. So here’s how important local food was to travellers looking to become one with each city. These are the dishes that they savoured in 2024, in these top travel destinations, that you should try too!

Amsterdam

Stroopwafels

Literally translating into syrup waffles, these snacks are made up of waffle material with a custard filling in the middle! Beautiful isn’t it? Now add Christmas to it!

Poffertjes

Fluffy treats don’t come with a better taste and name. The Dutch love themselves some poffertjes and so do the tourists. That’s probably why this dream is listed in every must-try food list of 2024.

The cafe life has taken hold of Amsterdam with full force. Every street corner has a signature food joint that boasts of a wide table set with the brunches of your dreams.

Sydney

Seafood

Being a beach destination has fared well with Sydney and it’s residents. The Sydney Fish Market is so grand a food spot and fashionable that it could be a heritage centre. Each dish is better than the other and the tourists can’t just enough of it. The seafood is also fresh off the boat, so why would you miss that?

I have so many drool-inducing pictures of some seriously artistic breakfasts, but this is already a very long blog. So let’s just leave it at that!

Truffle everything

I don’t know if it’s the Masterchef Australia effect but these people like to get fancy with every little thing they eat. The addition of truffles in literally anything they could get their hands on is a grand example, and boy, don’t the excited touristy populations love that!

As much as anyone loves the Eiffel Tower, any travelling human is destined to crave for some hot crepes filled with falling toppings and dripping sauces. It’s involuntary. Almost pre-determined!

Breakfasts are still pretty much in style! Thanks to the hotel rooms in the movies, decked with red roses and adorned with croissants, every stay in Paris now aims to look like that.  The breakfast is an elaborate part of that extravaganza so you can picture it. There will be ribbons, scented candles, flowers, a view and a ridiculous amount of croissants, toasts and cereal for two people to eat. It’s the aesthetic and the ‘Breakfast in Tiffany’s’ vibe that we love.

Yes, you read that right! The British go out to Indian restaurants craving for spice and curries. So much so that it has become a standard. So curious tourists have made that a thing.

Thanks to them, for not only avocado, was crowned the king of young people food but also became a main ingredient in the world of brunches. Yes, wherever you go now, people only have avocado toast and coffee for brunch.

During Cherry Blossom season, the Japanese love sitting under the trees while picnicking and watching them. So then came sakura mochi, beautiful sweet rice cakes that were a replica of the actual flowers. Just a picture of these tiny pods brought everyone joy. So if you travel to Tokyo anytime soon, remember to make sure it’s Sakura viewing season.

The matcha tea hit Japan like a storm and is here to stay. It was one of the major contenders in every list of food in 2018. Everything had to have matcha in it. Teas, lattes, icecreams, cakes, desserts…you name it, there was a matcha version!

And of course! Sushi.
