Tourists will now have to pay 1,000 Yen to leave Japan

The cherry-blossomed nation of Japan is increasingly becoming one of the popular tourist spots for international travellers, especially Indians. The timeless traditions, the temples, food, and unique cultural experiences are something that nobody wants to miss out on during their visit to Japan. But the next time when you visit Japan, you cannot stock on the Sensu, Yukata, and Sake like you normally do.

Because Japan’s National Tax Agency Ministry has announced an International Tourist Tax (Sayonara Tax) of 1,000 Yen (9.23 USD approx) payable by the International travellers visiting the country starting from 7th January 2019. So, you might want to save a little something.

Why though?

As per the projection, this new tourist tax will account for an estimated revenue of 50 billion Yen. And, the revenue will be put to good use (i.e) It will be used to improve the overall tourism infrastructure in Japan (Read Free Wi-Fi in public transports, faster processing at airports & seaports).

This new tourist tax which is already in usage since Monday will be levied on top of your return flight & cruise tickets. And, it is applicable to all international travellers regardless of the nationality.

But there are a few exceptions.

• Children below 2 years are exempt from paying this tax
• Not applicable to passengers who are in Japan for less than 24 hours
• Not applicable to those who are entering Japan on emergency cases (flight reroute, bad weather)
