Upper levels of Rome’s Colosseum to be reopened to the public after 40 years!

Though Rome’s Colosseum has been around in Italy’s tourist scene for centuries now, the two upper levels of Rome’s iconic landmark is going to be opened to the public from the 1st of November 2017 for the first time in forty years. Which means that the historic city can now be viewed from a whole new vantage point!

From November, the fourth and the fifth level of the quintessential landmark is going to be opened to public view, including an art gallery which is going to be accessible to the public for the first time ever. 

The different levels of the structure catered to different classes of people during the earlier days. Known as a popular place to witness human executions and training for battles, the audience who sat nearest to the stage were of the highest class, and those who sat the farthest away were from the lowest class and women.

Up high, these two levels offer a fantastic view of the Palatine Hill where the royal buildings once stood. The restoring and reopening of the two upper levels are a part of a €25 million renovation project, which has already seen the building completely cleaned and restored.

There also are plans on the pipeline for a new visitor centre and also for the restoration of the underground chambers of the building. Which means that the underground chambers might even be open in the future for staging concerts and events soon!
