The old stone Rabati fortress, the main sight of the Akhaltsikhe town, is standing on the small hill on the very shores of the Potskhovi river. Its name comes from Arabic meaning “fortified place”. It is located on the western suburbs and can be seen practically from anywhere in the city. This military building erected in the 13th century had witnessed a lot over the centuries. The fortress had been destroyed several times, was often in a siege, as a result of which had absorbed tracks of different cultures and religions. In 2012 there was held a large reconstruction after which Rabati fortress in Akhaltsikhe turned into a town within the town. It has become not only a historical monument, but a real cultural city centre. There are church, mosque, synagogue, small park, History Museum, various shops, hotels and even civil registry office inside the fortress walls.

After visiting Rabati Castle, we head toward Aspindza, where we stop at a local restaurant and have lunch with traditional Georgian dishes. 

The unique monument of Georgian architecture, rock-hewn town of Vardzia, is situated in Aspindza, formerly the Samtskhe Province of Georgia, approximately in 70 km to the south from Borjomi city (at about 1 300m altitude). The territory of Samtskhe-Javakheti served as a barrier separating the rest of the country from the Moslem world. The place often became a theater of military operations, and was also used for the assembly and review of All-Georgian troops starting for long campaigns. Therefore, the King Giorgi III, who ruled in 1156 -1184, decided to build a town-fortress there and complete the chain of castles protecting the land - Akhalkalaki, Khertvisi, Tmogvi, and Mgeltsikhe. He decided to build it not as an ordinary fortress but as a huge fortified military quarter with a permanent large and ready-to-attack garrison.

Giorgi III did not succeed in completing the building of Vardzia. The construction was brought to an end by his daughter Tamar. It is said that the name of the town derives from ‘ak var, dzia’ or ‘here I am, uncle’ - Tamar's call when lost in caves.

During the reign of Tamar the importance of Vardzia considerably increased and achieved a great prosperity, amazing the contemporaries. Historians tell us about the Queen's rich contributions to the monastery and the luxury of its caves. The chief seminary of southwestern Georgia was housing 2 000 monks until an earthquake ruined it in 1283. Another earthquake in 1456 was followed by a Persian army in 1551, so that now Vardzia cave complex consists of approximately 600 rooms survived of a total 3 000, cut in the rock and located in five, six, seven and sometimes twelve tiers, which included stables, barracks, bakeries, wine presses and stores.

Most of the rock-hewn chambers in the city were intended for residence. Each dwelling consists of three adjacent rooms, cut consecutively from the face into the depth of the rock along a south to north axis. The floors were connected by secret passages and holes made in the ceilings of the porticoes with wooden ladders attached to them.

The so-called Salkhino hall with an adjoining wine cellar was intended for feasts. There was also another large wine cellar (marani) with thirteen buried jars. Total number of 28 wine cellars functioned in Vardzia: 6 in the halls and 22 in the store-rooms with 235 jars containing 90 973 liters. The existence of wine-pressers and wine cellars indicates that viticulture and wine-making played an important role in Vardzian life, especially in the 15th century.

The so-called ‘Tamar's room’ is located in the west part of the hall. According to a legend, Queen Tamar had 366 rooms in Vardzia so that enemies could never find out where her bedroom was.

The spring is situated deep in the mountain not far from the main church. Its reservoir contains about 8 m3 (i.e. up to 200 buckets) of fresh cold water, the constant temperature 110C. However, a special water supply was built to supply the town with spring water. The water supply provided 166 000 liters per day that was enough to supply the town of 50 000 people. A tank containing 630 000 litters, was cut in the rock in the west part of the complex to store water.

Vardzia is best known for the paintings of the main church. The images of King George III, Queen Tamar and Eristavi Rati Surameli are found in the Assumption temple, created by the master Giorgi in 1180. This is one of the four images of the great queen of such an ancient origin. Vardzia's paintings represent significant monument of the Georgian monumental painting.

In the south of the country, not far from the famous cave town of Vardzia, at the confluence of the Paravani and Mtkvari rivers, there is a popular attraction, the fortress of Khertvisi. The ancient fortress perfectly matches nature: Surrounded by mighty mountains, the muscular walls look even more powerful. The date of the construction of the defense in different sources is indicated in different ways. The first mention of it was back in the time of the Great Silk Road. The castle is located on the top of the mountain and, at one time, was difficult to access. That's why Khertvisi is kept in good condition. We stop at the fortress for 10 minutes to take nice pictures and continue our tour to Borjomi.

Our last stop is at Borjomi, a hydro-thermal health spa resort in the southern region of Samtskhe-Javakheti. It has an international reputation for its geothermal spring mineral water resources. We walk in Borjomi Central Park and taste mineral water Borjomi which has unique healing qualities. It won its first gold medal in 1907 in Belgium. The water has been bottled since 1896. Finally, we can visit some attractions and enjoy incredible nature in Borjomi Central Park.

Virgin Mary Metekhi church is located on the left bank of the river Mtkvari, on the cliff plateau. The first church on this place was probably built by Vakhtang Gorgasali, symbolically resembling the church built on virgin Mary’s tomb in Gethsemane garden in Jerusalem. According to the legend, the former catholicos Kirion transferred the saint Shushanik to this church in the 7th century.


Vakhtang I Gorgasali, of the Chosroid dynasty, was a king of Iberia, natively known as Kartli, in the second half of the 5th and first quarter of the 6th century.

Dating Vakhtang's reign is problematic. With the alliance to the Byzantine Empire, he led his people into a lengthy struggle against Sasanian Iranian hegemony, which ended in Vakhtang's defeat and the weakening of the kingdom of Iberia. Tradition also ascribes his reorganization of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the foundation of Tbilisi, Georgia's modern capital. Ivane Javakhishvili assigns to Vakhtang's rule the dates c. 449–502, while Cyril Toumanoff suggests 447–522.

Rike park is considered to be the youngest recreational area in Tbilisi. It is situated on the left bank of the river Kura (Mtkvari) and has already become a popular place for both local and international visitors, especially families, and in summer. The Rike park is relatively easy to find, as its main entrance is right from the beautiful pedestrian ‘Bridge of Peace.’ The park hosts numerous entertainment facilities like singing and dancing fountains, artificial climbing walls, children’s maze, mega-chess boards, footpaths, and quiet corners. The start point of a newly opened cable car that takes visitors up to Narikala fortress is located in the Rike park and several fancy bars and restaurants.

Bridge of Peace is the attraction one wouldn’t want to miss in Tbilisi. A pedestrian glass and steel bridge in a bow-shaped design sit over the Mtkvari (Kura) river in the Georgian capital. It was officially opened in May 2010. The bridge was brought to Georgia from Italy in 200 unassembled components. The bridge is 156 meters long and has more than 10 000 LED bulbs built-in that are switched on daily 90 minutes before the sunset. 


In 2010 Rezo Gabriadze built a unique clock tower next to the marionette theatre in Tbilisi's old town. Every hour an angel comes out with a small hammer to ring the bell.
There is a small puppet theatre inside the tower, and twice a day, at 12:00 and 19:00, you can see a show – “The Circle of Life.”
Rezo decorated the tower with hundreds of tiles, which he designed himself, and then it instantly became a prominent architectural attraction of Tbilisi. People often call it the Tower with a clock or The Tower with the angel.

In the historical district, in upper Kala, on Shavteli street, the Anchiskhati basilica is located, the church dates back to the 6th century. According to the historical sources, it was constructed by Dachi Ujarmeli ( from Ujarma). It was bearing the name of the Virgin Mary’s Birth. The name Anchiskhati was given to it a little bit later. When Peter Meskhi moved the image of Christ not made by hand from the Anchi church to this one in 1675, Peter was granted the position of a pastor by the Catholicon Domenici. From this day on, the Meskhishvilis were pastors of the church. The son of Peter- Alex is the founder of the calligraphers’ dynasty called the Aleximaskhishvilis.


We stop at the Patriarchate of Georgia and hear interesting facts about the place.

Sioni Cathedral is located on the street having the same name, in one of the oldest districts of Tbilisi, in upper Kala. According to the legend, the first church on the very place was constructed by King Vakhtang Gorgasali in the 5th century,

Shardeni Street is one of the most popular and beautiful streets in Tbilisi. This pedestrian street is so well known that any guest that travels to Georgia never leaves this country without visiting Shardeni Street.

We use a cable car to get to Mother of Georgia's statue and see amazing views from there.

Kartvlis Deda (Mother of a Georgian), erroneously known as Kartlis Deda, is a monument in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, which has become a city symbol. The statue was erected on the top of Sololaki hill in 1958, the year Tbilisi celebrated its 1500th anniversary. Prominent Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli designed the twenty-meter aluminum figure of a woman in a Georgian national dress. She symbolizes the Georgian national character: in her left hand, she holds a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends, and in her right hand is a sword for those who come as enemies.

Narikala fortress is the most known landmark of Tbilisi. No one leaves Tbilisi without walking around this impressive fortress. You can feel the history of Tbilisi, even though the walls are not in great shape. During the day, the Narikala Fortress draws your attention from all sides of Tbilisi. It overlooks Mtkvari River, which makes Narikala more incredible. Narikala is one of the most visited places in Tbilisi.

Leghvtakhevi is the waterfall we visit during the tour; the place is popular among Georgians and foreigners to chill when it's hot.

Chreli Abano is a place for a sulfur bath that is so popular among tourists and Georgians. The site looks like a mosque, but it's a sulfur bath, nice to visit and have fun.

The “Abanotubani” is the name given to the district in the Old Town of Tbilisi. There is a whole street (Abanos Kucha) of public bathhouses that use the sulfurous waters of the many hot springs in this area.

Our first stop will be Zhinvali water reservoir/dam which is located in Dusheti Municipality, Eastern Georgia,70 km north of Tbilisi.The building of the hydroelectric dam formed the Zhinvali Reservoir. The dam has been built in 1986. There You can take beautiful photos with amazing panoramic views.

Our second destination is Ananuri Fortress, it was a castle and seat of the eristavis (Dukes) of Aragvi, a feudal dynasty which ruled the area from the 13th century. The castle was the scene of numerous battles.

In 1739, Ananuri was attacked by forces from a rival duchy, commanded by Shanshe of Ksani and was set on fire. The Aragvi clan was massacred. However, four years later, the local peasants revolted against rule by the Shamshe, killing the usurpers and inviting King Teimuraz II to rule directly over them. However, in 1746, King Teimuraz was forced to suppress another peasant uprising, with the help of King Erekle II of Kakheti. The fortress remained in use until the beginning of the 19th century. In 2007, the complex has been on the tentative list for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage Site program.

Our next Stop in Pasanauri is an incredible place and nature's miracle that attracts many tourists. You can see the confluence of two rivers there – the white Aragvi and the black Aragvi. The most amazing thing that the flows of two rivers do not mix up and look as a black-white stream. Also in this spot there is available to try whitewater rafting on the Aragvi river, this is additional activity and depends on you.

Friendship monument is one of the favorite place for travelers. it was built 1983 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk and the ongoing friendship between Soviet Georgia and Soviet Russia. Located on the Georgian Military Highway between the ski resort town of Gudauri and the Jvari pass, the monument is a large round stone and from this place is available to see stunning panoramic views.Inside the monument is a large tile mural that spans the whole circumference of the structure and depicts scenes of Georgian and Russian history. Near this place it is available to have paragliding experience.

Our last destination is Trinity Church of Gergeti. The ancient church, dateing from the 14th century, stands at an elevation of 2170 meters, overlooking the small town of Stephantsminda, also reffered to as Kazbegi, in the North of the country. Apart from its religious purpose, the medieval church used to serve as a hiding place. During invasions at different times in Georgia's history the national treasure was hidden there, since it was hardly reachable for enemies. The view from Gergeti Trinity Church: Mount Kazbegi, one of the highest mountains in Georgia. Nowadays, visitors can reach it by 4WD. The church has a separate bell tower and lies on the way to Mount Kazbegi, which – at the height of 5047 meters above sea level - is the third highest mountain in Georgia. During Soviet rule in Georgia, religious services were banned, but now many couples, including foreigners, ascend the mountain specifically to hold their wedding ceremonies there.
