Best Places to Visit in Spain

1. Barcelona

Barcelona is Spain's most visually exhilarating city, a Mediterranean metropolis where the genius of Antoni Gaudí shapes almost every major street. The Sagrada Família, still under construction after over 140 years, remains one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth and alone justifies the trip. Park Güell offers a quieter, hillside perspective on Gaudí's imagination, while Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia is best seen at night when the facade is dramatically lit. Beyond the architecture, the Gothic Quarter rewards slow exploration on foot, Barceloneta beach gives the city its Mediterranean soul, and the food scene across El Born and Gràcia is among the finest in Europe.

Tip: Book Sagrada Família tickets at least two to three weeks ahead. The tower access tickets sell out faster than standard entry and the views from the top are worth the extra cost.

2. Madrid

Madrid is Spain's capital and one of Europe's great art cities, home to three world-class museums within walking distance of each other. The Prado holds Velázquez, Goya, El Greco, and Bosch in a single building. The Reina Sofía houses Picasso's Guernica. The Thyssen-Bornemisza covers eight centuries of Western art across five floors. Beyond the museums, the city rewards wandering. The Royal Palace is the largest in Western Europe by floor area. Retiro Park is one of the finest urban parks on the continent. The tapas culture in La Latina and Lavapiés neighbourhoods, where bars open mid-afternoon and stay busy until midnight, is unlike anything Indian travellers will have experienced before.

Tip: The Prado is free on weekday evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm. Go then and avoid the worst of the daytime crowds.

3. Seville

Seville is the cultural heart of Andalusia and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and the third largest church overall, with Columbus's tomb inside. The adjoining Giralda Tower, originally a Moorish minaret, offers panoramic views of the old city from the top. The Real Alcázar is a living royal palace with 700 years of continuous use, its Mudéjar tilework and garden pavilions as breathtaking as anything in Granada. The Santa Cruz neighbourhood surrounding these monuments, with its whitewashed walls, flower-filled courtyards, and hidden plazas, is best explored in the early morning or evening when the light is soft and the crowds have thinned.

Tip: The Alcázar is a working royal residence. On days when the Spanish royal family is in residence it closes to visitors without notice. Check the official website the morning of your visit.

4. Granada

Dominated by the breathtaking Alhambra Palace, Granada is ideal for travellers fascinated by Spain's Moorish history. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features exquisite palaces, intricate carvings, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Beyond the Alhambra, the historic Albaicín district offers winding alleyways, traditional whitewashed houses, and spectacular viewpoints. Granada's vibrant atmosphere, mountain backdrop, and famous tapas culture create a unique travel experience unlike anywhere else in Spain.

5. Madrid Day Trips: Toledo and Segovia

Just a short journey from Madrid, Toledo and Segovia are some of Spain's most remarkable historical treasures. Toledo is renowned for its medieval streets, magnificent cathedral, and centuries-old blend of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim influences. Segovia impresses visitors with its remarkably preserved Roman aqueduct and fairy-tale Alcázar Castle. Together, these two historic cities provide a fascinating glimpse into Spain's rich cultural and architectural heritage.

6. Valencia

Valencia is one of Spain's most underrated cities and the birthplace of paella, which here is made with rabbit and chicken, not seafood, and is eaten at Sunday lunch, not dinner. The City of Arts and Sciences complex, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is one of the most striking pieces of contemporary architecture in Europe and worth a half-day on its own. The UNESCO-listed Silk Exchange in the old town dates from the 15th century and is a masterpiece of Valencian Gothic architecture. The city's beaches, the Malvarrosa and El Cabañal, are wide, well-maintained, and far less crowded than Barcelona's. Valencia also hosts Las Fallas in March, one of Spain's most spectacular festivals, where months of elaborate sculptural work is set alight in a single night of coordinated bonfires across the city.

7. Costa del Sol and Andalusian Beaches

Stretching along Spain's sunny southern coastline, Costa del Sol and Andalusia are perfect for beach holidays, luxury escapes, and scenic road trips. Popular destinations such as Marbella, Málaga, and Estepona offer golden beaches, stylish resorts, and vibrant promenades. Beyond the coast, travellers can explore Andalusia's famous white villages, including Ronda and Frigiliana, known for their stunning views and traditional charm. The region enjoys excellent weather throughout much of the year.

8. Ibiza and the Balearic Islands

Ibiza is world-famous for its electronic music scene but the island has a quieter, equally beautiful face that most visitors never find. The UNESCO-listed old town of Dalt Vila, perched on a fortified hill above the harbour, is one of the best-preserved medieval citadels in the western Mediterranean. The north of the island has unspoilt coves, hiking trails through pine forests, and a slow-living farming culture that feels entirely removed from the clubs of San Antonio. Mallorca, the largest Balearic island, combines the dramatic Serra de Tramuntana mountain range with historic Palma de Mallorca and some of the finest coves in the Mediterranean. Both islands are easily reached by short flights or ferry from Barcelona or Valencia and work well as add-ons for honeymooners and beach-focused travellers extending a Spain itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Spain

Spain is broadly a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to do and where you want to go.

Season Months Temperature Pros Cons Best For
Spring (Peak) Apr – Jun 18–28°C Best weather, blooming landscapes, festivals Crowds at top sites All travellers, sightseeing
Summer Jul – Aug 28–40°C Long days, beaches, Ibiza season Very hot in Madrid/Andalusia Coastal holidays, Ibiza
Autumn Sep – Nov 15–25°C Fewer crowds, lower prices, wine harvest Shorter days by November Culture, food, wine
Winter Dec – Feb 5–15°C Christmas markets, ski in the Pyrenees Cold in Madrid, some sites crowded in December City breaks, skiing

Spring Tip: April and May are the finest months to visit Andalusia (Seville and Granada), when temperatures are 22–28°C, the orange blossom is in bloom, and both cities host major festivals, the Seville Feria de Abril in April and the Corpus Christi processions in June.

Best Things to Do in Spain

  • Walk the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona: A largely car-free medieval labyrinth of Roman ruins, medieval cathedrals, and tapas bars, best explored on foot with no fixed plan.
  • Take the AVE high-speed train: Spain's high-speed rail network is one of Europe's finest. Madrid to Seville takes 2.5 hours; Madrid to Barcelona takes 2.5–3 hours. Far more scenic and convenient than flying.

  • Relax on the Costa del Sol: Marbella's beach clubs, Puerto Banús marina, and luxury seaside lifestyle offer an excellent way to unwind at the end of an Andalusian itinerary.

Spain Food Guide for Indian Travellers

Spanish cuisine is one of the world's great food cultures, and for Indian travellers, it offers a fascinating combination of the unfamiliar (jamón, seafood paella, and churros with chocolate) and the comfortingly familiar (spiced stews, legume-based dishes, and vegetable tapas). While Spain is not as automatically vegetarian-friendly as Southeast Asia, Indian vegetarians can navigate the country well with a little advance planning.

Must-Try Spanish Dishes

  • Paella Valenciana: Spain's most famous dish, saffron-infused rice with seafood or chicken, best eaten at the source in Valencia or at a traditional restaurant in the Albufera wetlands.
  • Tapas: Spain's defining food culture, small plates of patatas bravas, croquetas, pan con tomate, gambas al ajillo, and tortilla española enjoyed across countless bars.
  • Pintxos (Basque Country): Bar snacks of the Basque Country, typically bread slices topped with creative combinations of seafood, cheese, and cured meats. San Sebastián's Old Quarter is the epicentre.
  • Gazpacho and Salmorejo: Cold tomato-based soups from Andalusia, refreshing and vegetarian-friendly.
  • Churros with Chocolate: Spain's iconic street dessert, fried dough strips dipped in thick hot chocolate. The Chocolatería San Ginés in Madrid has been serving them since 1894.
  • Jamón Ibérico: Spain's finest cured ham, a national obsession. Non-vegetarians should try it at least once from a specialist shop.
  • Crema Catalana: Catalonia's version of crème brûlée, widely available across Barcelona.
  • Sangría and Tinto de Verano: Spain's iconic wine-based drinks, ubiquitous at restaurants and beach bars.

Indian Vegetarian and Jain Travellers in Spain

Spain is manageable, though not automatically easy, for Indian vegetarians. Key guidance:

  • Tapas bars almost always offer patatas bravas, pan con tomate, tortilla española, and vegetable croquetas, reliably vegetarian options.
  • Indian restaurants are available in Barcelona (the Gothic Quarter, Barceloneta) and Madrid (Lavapiés, Malasaña) and, to a lesser extent, in Seville and Málaga. Quality varies; research in advance.
  • Jain travellers should carry a small translation card listing dietary restrictions in Spanish (sin cebolla, sin ajo, sin carne, sin pescado, without onion, without garlic, without meat, and without fish).
  • Supermarkets (Mercadona, Carrefour, and Lidl) are well-stocked with fresh produce, breads, cheeses, and packaged foods that work for vegetarians and self-caterers.

Pickyourtrail pre-arranges vegetarian and Jain meal preferences at hotels and with select restaurant partners for all Spain packages.

Spain Currency and Payments

Practical Tips for Indian Travellers in Spain

  • Apply for the Schengen visa at least 6 weeks before travel: Processing typically takes 15–20 working days, and BLS appointment slots fill up fast during peak season.
  • Book Alhambra tickets online weeks in advance: they sell out fast, especially the Nasrid Palaces' timed entry. Same-day tickets are almost never available.
  • Pre-book Sagrada Família tickets online to avoid multi-hour queues at the entrance.
  • Carry a Type C travel adaptor: Spain uses the standard European two-pin socket.
  • Download the RENFE app for AVE train bookings and consider booking tickets 30–60 days ahead for the best prices.
  • Spanish meal timings are late by Indian standards: lunch at 2–4 PM, dinner from 9 PM onwards. Tourist areas are more flexible, but embrace the rhythm where possible.
  • Learn a few Spanish phrases: 'gracias' (thank you), 'por favour' (please), and 'Habla inglés?' (Do you speak English?) They are well-received everywhere.
  • Tap water in Spain is safe to drink in all major cities.
  • Be alert for pickpockets in Barcelona's Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter: Use a crossbody bag and keep phones in front pockets in crowded areas.
  • Visit the Alhambra early in the morning or book a guided evening visit: The late-afternoon light on the Nasrid Palaces is spectacular.

Why Choose Pickyourtrail for Spain Vacation Packages?

When you search for Spain holiday packages from India, you will find dozens of fixed group tour options with rigid itineraries and opaque pricing. Pickyourtrail is different.

  • Fully Customised, Not Cookie-Cutter: Every Spain trip package we build is unique to the traveller. You choose your destinations, hotel category, travel dates, pace, and add-ons.
  • Transparent Pricing in INR: We quote everything in Indian Rupees — no hidden foreign exchange surprises. What you see in the proposal is what you pay.
  • Schengen Visa Expertise: We provide complete Schengen visa documentation support, checklists, BLS appointment guidance, and travel insurance recommendations, as standard with every Spain package.
  • India-Specific Travel Intelligence: We understand what Indian travellers need, Indian vegetarian and Jain restaurant recommendations in Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville; advance Alhambra ticket procurement; and AVE train vs. domestic flight advice.
  • 24/7 On-Ground Support: Our destination experts are available round the clock. If your AVE train is delayed or your Seville hotel has an issue, we handle it.
  • No Minimum Group Size: Travel as a couple, a family, or a group; we customise for any group size without per-person surcharges for small groups.

Book Your Spain Tour Package

Spain is a destination that rewards the traveller who goes beyond Barcelona and Madrid, who discovers the magic of a quiet morning in Granada's Albaicín, a flamenco show in a Seville courtyard, or a pintxos crawl through the rain-washed streets of San Sebastián. At Pickyourtrail, every Spain tour package we build is an original, not a recycled itinerary, not a fixed group departure. We start with your travel dates, interests, group composition, and budget, and we build outward from there.

Share your travel preferences, budget, duration, and our Spain destination specialist will get back to you within 24 hours with a fully personalised itinerary and transparent pricing in Indian Rupees.

Very professional and well networked agency! We booked our trip for Spain and Portugal and they were very patient with our requirements, given we had people aged 5 to 75 in our group. Their advice on visa was also excellent. Definitely highly recommended and will use them again, if needed!

One of the best trip organiser that I have ever Seen. their systems and processes are extremely good. They have a thorough idea to customise the Trip by selecting the best hotels and activities. I went to Spain and Portugal and it was truly a well organised vacation. Mr Mithun and Miss Shamanthika were extremely helpful and kind to clear all my doubts and apprehensions. As an icing on the cake their online support system is a show stopper. Their timely support is incredible and very helpful during the trip. As an avid traveller having been travelled for more than 15 countries over these 25 years, I would close my eyes and opt for Pick Your trial for my next vacation.

Had a great experience with Pick Your Trail during my Spain and Portugal trip. Their 24X7 live chat support during the trip is actually 24x7!! No matter the time, someone from the team was always available to hear us out and resolve our queries. Would 100% recommend this app to people who need a hassle free trip. Use their services if you would like to be 100% present during your trip at the place rather than manage 100 different things.
