Our tour begins by visiting the Bergen Fortress. When Bergen was the capital, this is where the palace was located. It's the best spot to start a walking tour!

We pass by Håkon's Hall, the major part of the medieval palace still standing today. Here you learn about Bergen's time as an independent country and we also explain Norway's unions with Denmark and Sweden. 

Please note that we do not enter Håkons Hall (it is a museum that costs money). 

On rare occasions, the fortress is closed due to a private event. 

After learning about our royal past, we make our way into Bryggen. Bryggen is Bergen's UNESCO World Heritage-site and is where merchants have traded for 1000 years. It was made successful primarily by the Hanseatic League (the Hanse), a group of German merchants. We spend our time here learning about the Hanseatic League, their trading methods and systems, and how Bryggen functioned as a wharf.

Please note we do not go in any of these buildings. They are all shops and small businesses today - none are museums. 

Our last point in historical Bergen is St. Mary's Church, the oldest still standing building in the city. It was constructed in the 12th century and still functions as a church today. 

Please note we do not go inside the church as it has a separate admission fee. 

After the history part, we head up-hill into the district Fjellsiden, which is a well-preserved area of wooden hours. We'll discuss everyday life in Norway, including what we eat, when we work, what a house costs, our taxes, and so on :) 

The route depends on your guide and their own interests. We pride ourselves on being a tour by locals showing local spots, so we choose the best route based on our interests. 

We pass by the funicular station so you can know where it is. Here we talk about outdoor life and the importance of hiking 
culture in Norway.

Note that we do not take the funicular! It would add an extra hour and 150 NOK to the trip. Also, it's best you go up at leisure. Maybe you want to go up for the sunset? Or maybe you want to go up to go hiking?

The last twenty minutes of this walk is spent discussing modern Bergen and our food culture. Bergen is, after all, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy! We make our way into the old town centre, walking along Skostredet - a popular street for restaurants.

The tour begins at Bradbenken 1. You must be there at least 10 minutes before the tour start time. We are not obligated to contact you if you are late; it is your responsibility to tell us. If you are late, wait at the meeting point and contact us. We cancel all bookings more than 20 minutes late. 

The tour ends at the fish market/tourist office. 

WALKING GRADE:
This walk is moderate, and you will be walking on cobblestone. There are 2-3 flights of stairs (up-hill) on this tour. We walk approx. 3km (2 miles) in 2 hours. 

CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS:
Some cruise ships dock in the city centre (5-10 mins from our meeting point), while others dock out of the city centre (20-25 mins from our meeting point).

CANCELLATIONS & REFUND POLICY
We do not cancel the tour due to rain. 

You can cancel and be fully refunded up to 24 hours before the tour starts. 

If you wish to cancel within 24 hours of the tour taking place, you will not be refunded. This is Viator's policy so we can't make exceptions (we get penalised if we cancel those tours). If you are delayed due to a train or late flight, we are unable to refund you but will do our best to move you to another tour. We need to see proof of delay. 

If you show up at a different tour day or time than the one you booked, we do not let you onto the tour if it is fully booked. Our tours are limited to 16 people and we strictly follow this. We reserve the right to cancel your booking without refund.

Walking Tour of Bergen Past & Present 10:00

Please meet us at the address Bradbenken 1, a brick office building by the entrance to the fortress. We stand on the side of the building facing the harbour.

Senate square is our meeting point, and it is probably the main tourist attraction of the town, where the history of modern Helsinki begins. Here we will find out what are the three beautiful buildings around us!

Helsinki Cathedral or the White cathedral is the most famous landmark in the town that you have probably seen pictures of. We can have a look at inside the church together to learn a bit about the religious mindset in Finland. If we are lucky, we can also enjoy some music inside the church. (The church is closed during the church services, usually on Sunday mornings). In the summer season there is an entrance fee of 8€ to visit the church, so we will visit it from outside only.

"Torille" is a famous Finnish phrase, which means "to the market" ! Let´s visit the market square to find out what that means! What Finns usually eat or drink, and what can you buy from Helsinki to take home with you? The gulf of Finland has probably many stories to tell us about Helsinki as it has seen many battles throughout the history. 

Market square is located by the Gulf of Finland with views to Suomenlinna island, one of the many beautiful islands in the gulf, which is a highly recommended place to visit as it is a UNESCO heritage site. We will of course help you how to get to the island.

We will give you a complete guide to a Finnish sauna and give you some recommendations on the best saunas in the town. Let’s learn why Finns are so crazy about sauna?! 

Why do we need two Cathedrals in Helsinki? This one looks different than Helsinki Cathedral, let us find out the reason! We will visit this beautiful cathedral from distance, when we visit the market square.

Locally known as Helsinki’s champs de elysee, is home to Kappeli restaurant and Espa music stage. In the middle, stands Runeberg's statue, the national poet of Finland. Here, we will also learn some fun facts about Finland the Finnish language.

Fazer is the first cafe bar in helsinki, where locals gather for a coffee break.

Locally known as Aleksi, is of the main streets in the city center with many beautiful art deco buildings, each of which has a lot of amazing stories to tell about the Finnish culture!

Central train station of Helsinki is a beautiful landmark in the city center guarded by four massive statues who have many stories to tell us! We will also pass by two other beautiful buildings: Finland’s national theater and Ateneum museum (Finland’s national gallary).

Oodi library is the highlight of the tour, where you will need to change the definition of a library you have on mind, because this is different than any libraries you have ever seen, and it is gonna blow your mind!

The tour ends at Oodi centrali library, next to the central train station, within 15 minutes walking distance from Senate square.

Please note that:
- There are many other tour guides at Senate Square, so please take care not to join the wrong tour.
- We start the tour on time, so please manage to arrive 5-10 min earlier to the meeting point. The guide cannot answer calls or messages when the tour begins.
- Refunds are not accepted due to no show.

- We won´t have any toilet/coffee breaks during the tour, so please plan beforehand. 
- Helsinki has cold weather from October to May, so please wear enough clothes as we are mostly in outdoors. Some coffee in thermos bottle can help you keep warm.
- In the summer, Helsinki has sharp sunny days, so sunglasses and suncream are essential. Some water in the summer helps you keep hydrated.
- Wear appropriate shoes as we will walk around 2,5 kilometers.

We are committed to sustainable tourism, therefore, we have some tips for you:
- Tap water in Finland is drinkable and comes with a high quality. We recommend you to bring a reusable bottle and refill it with tap water.
- We recommend you to recycle all your bottles and cans. You can recylce them in grocerry stores and get some money back.
- We reccommend you to use public transportation to the meeting point.
- We recommend you to buy local products, local foods and drinks to help the local economy.

You can tip the guide at the end of the tour if you enjoyed the tour. Tips can be paid in cash or by card via our payment machine.

Walking Tour in Helsinki 

Meet the guide at Senate square, next to the statue of Alexander ii. The guide holds a red sign that reads "Helsinki Walking Tour". Please arrive to the meeting point 5-10 min. earlier for check-in as we begin the tours on time, and the guide can´t answer calls or messages when the tour begins.

A Finntastic Walking Tour in Helsinki

The statue of Tsar Alexander the 2nd in the center of the Senate Square, marks the start point of the tour. This is the most historical part of Helsinki, and some say the most beautiful - with it's Russian Neoclassic architecture. Here we can see the Helsinki Cathedral, the University of Helsinki, and a great viewpoint of the Senate Square for photos. 

Following our visit to the Senate Square, our next stop is the White Helsinki Cathedral. Perhaps one of the most impressive buildings in Helsinki, it is also the most visited building. We will allow a little time to visit inside (providing there are no services or weddings), and we will allow time to take photos of this building so you have a souvenir to take home. 

National Library of Finland is nestled in the very heart of the Senate Square, and has an impressive interior. This treasure trove of knowledge and culture, houses manuscripts, rare books and exhibitions. We will allow time to visit inside, if the groups aren't too big, and if the library is open (on week days). Otherwise we have photos of the magnificent interior to show you!

Our next stop is the Bank of Finland - where all central monetary deposits in Finland are held. From here, we have a connection that links us to World War 2, where we will discuss Finlands relationship with its military neighbours, friends and adversaries - both old and new. 

Our next stop is the magnificent Relandersgrund Boat. This stop is more than just a boat, it has important historic connections to Helsinki's past. Great photo stop with views of Uspenski Cathedral, so get your cameras ready!

One of the most beautiful hidden districts of Helsinki, Katajonokka is the home of Art Nouveau buildings, in true Finnish National Romantic style. In fact, here we have the 2nd largest collection of Art Nouveau Buildings in Europe (after Riga in Latvia)

This Sauna stop has a great view of Kauppatori market stalls, our most central Sauna, and you can also take the boat to Suomenlinna from here. Follow our guides recommendations on places to visit after the tour.

Completed in 1868, the grand Uspenski cathedral towers over Helsinki with it's beautiful golden domes, and ornate interior. (subject to opening times) we will visit the cathedral, and take you inside to see what this beautiful architecture has to offer. 

Our next stop takes us through Esplanadi park - also known as the "living room of Helsinki". This park is at its best in the summer where you will find locals sitting and enjoying the sun, but even outside of summer we can show you some great cafe recommendations, and also give advice on where to see some of the best Finnish Design. 

From here will see the Central Railway Station - the place where you can take international trains around Finland, and the very heart of Helsinki. We can also take a stop next to the Ateneum National Art Gallery, which has beautiful Neoclassical Architecture. 

Our final and End Point of the tour will show you several buildings, one of which we can go inside. We won't tell you what this building is yet, as it is a surprise! This district houses our Modern Architecture, which started from the early 1990s, through to 2017. The end point of the tour has a very special Library, "Oodi", which is the perfect place to visit immediately after the tour. You will find here a cafe, toilets, and lots of fun things to explore. 

The tour ends outside our most modern and beautiful Library, Oodi Library.
