Acropolis museum

The Acropolis is home to an exceptional array

of incredible classical masterpieces and thousands of

years’ worth of history. The word 'Acropolis' actually translates as 'high city' due to its elevated

position above the rest of Athens.


The Parthenon was originally built in the 5

th Century BCE. This incomparable temple was built to

honor the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, Athena, whom the city is named after


Attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, the museum is rapidly becoming as famous

as

the architectural wonders that surround it. Opened to the public in 2009, the museum is home to

an incredible collection of Ancient and Classical Greek artefacts all housed in a state of the art

setting.

The temple took well over 600 years to complete and it stood proudly for approximately 200 years

before time and neglect began to dilapidate the building until it reached its present condition which

nonetheless evokes the temple's former grandeur.

Greece and the Olympic Game

s have a dramatically intertwined history with the fortunes of one

often affecting the fortunes of the other. This relationship can be traced back literally thousands of

years with the ancient Olympic Games dating back as far as the 7th Century BCE

It is uncertain whether there any actual remains at the site but the tribute commemorates those

who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending their nation and its principals, throughout history.

Although its history is relatively recent compared with the rest of this ancient city, Syntagma Square

has been the central point for all of the major political movements in Athens over the last 200 years

Interestingly, considering Plaka is

of central importance to Athens, the origins of its name have been

lost to the ages. In fact, the area was not even known as Plaka until the Greek War of Independence

came to a close in the early stages of the 1800's.

• Infants aged 0-5, and EU citizens under 25 receive free admission upon providing their ID at the ticket booth at the Acropolis site. Non-EU citizens under 25 receive a reduced-price entry (April-October) upon providing their ID at the ticket booth.

The Acropolis' opening hours are: November to March daily 8 AM - 5 PM (last admission: 4.30 PM), June to August daily 8 AM - 8 PM (last admission: 7:30 PM). For the rest months, please note that the opening hours differ due to a gradual change in the length of the day. The last admission is permitted 1 hour before sunset time. Please check carefully before your visit.
The above operating hours may vary due to special occasions, please check before visiting.

Important: Your voucher is not your admission ticket. Acropolis entrance e-tickets will be sent by email the day before your visit, to the email address you have provided.
