How to Reach Johannesburg from the USA

Reaching Johannesburg, South Africa, from the USA involves a long-haul journey, but the adventure is worth every mile. Here's a guide on how to get to Johannesburg from the USA:

  • Direct Flights: Several major US cities, such as New York City, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., offer direct flights to Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). These flights typically take around 15 to 18 hours, depending on your departure city.
  • Connecting Flights: If there are no direct flights from your city, you can opt for connecting flights. Common layover cities include London, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Doha. Be prepared for longer travel times with layovers.
  • Travel Documents: Ensure you have a valid passport and check South Africa's visa requirements for US citizens. Depending on the purpose and duration of your visit, you may need a visa or be eligible for a visa-free stay.
  • Time Zone: Johannesburg operates on South Africa Standard Time (SAST), which can be several hours ahead of US time zones. Adjust your schedule and internal clock accordingly upon arrival.
  • Currency Exchange: Exchange your US Dollars for South African Rand (ZAR) upon arrival at the airport or local currency exchange offices.
  • Transport from the Airport: Upon landing at JNB, you can find taxis, shuttle services, or car rentals to take you to your accommodation.
  • Health Precautions: Stay informed about any health precautions or travel advisories, especially in light of current global health concerns.

Average Cost for a Johannesburg Trip from the USA

The cost of a trip to Johannesburg from the USA can vary significantly depending on several factors, including your departure city, travel preferences, and the duration of your stay. Here's a rough breakdown of the average costs:

  1. Flights: The biggest expense is typically the round-trip airfare. Prices can range from $800 to $2,000 or more per person, depending on the time of booking, airline choice, and class of travel.
  2. Accommodation: Johannesburg offers a variety of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. On average, expect to spend $50 to $200 per night for lodging.
  3. Food: Dining costs vary widely, with budget meals at local restaurants costing around $10 to $20 per person, while upscale dining can range from $30 to $100 or more per person.
  4. Transportation: Public transportation in Johannesburg is affordable, with bus and train fares ranging from $1 to $5. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also available.
  5. Activities: Entrance fees to museums and attractions generally range from $5 to $20 per person. Guided tours, safaris, and other activities can vary in cost.
  6. Miscellaneous: Budget for miscellaneous expenses, including souvenirs, travel insurance, and unforeseen costs. Allocate around $100 to $300 for these expenses.

Overall, a moderate budget traveler can expect to spend approximately $2,000 to $3,000 for a week-long trip to Johannesburg, excluding international airfare. However, luxury travelers can spend considerably more, while budget-conscious travelers can find ways to reduce costs and enjoy the city on a tighter budget.

Trip to SA -The itinerary planning was sloppy from start. Couple of swapping of hotels without reasons being said. Due to the swap of hotel in Capetown, things were bit not in favour for tourists. The hotel had no parking and they had paid valet parking. And then the entry and exit of the hotel leads to a square inn with refugees staying there. No complaints on the refugees, but just that they stare at the tourists which we wouldnt feel secure.Miscalculation of driving timings while planning.A practical knowledge on the places will help them probably in planning. The place itself, activities over there, the hospitality by the locals and the support team from PYT were great. South Africa is a beautiful place indeed. Thanks to Sunil, Alex, Preetha and the other support members.
