Best Places to Visit in Mauritius
1. Grand Baie (North Coast)
Grand Baie is the main tourist hub of Mauritius—lively, well-developed, and full of energy. It offers a wide range of restaurants (Indian, Creole, Chinese, and seafood), shopping along Sunset Boulevard, and a vibrant nightlife scene. It also serves as a key departure point for catamaran cruises. While the bay itself is scenic, the central beach is not the best on the island.
- Best for: First-time visitors, couples who enjoy nightlife, and travellers who want everything nearby
- Beach tip: Super U Beach, just south of the main area, is quieter and better for swimming
2. Flic en Flac (West Coast)
Flic en Flac is famous for its stunning sunsets. Facing directly west, the lagoon offers breathtaking views as the sun sets behind Le Morne Mountain, creating golden-orange skies that attract photographers and travellers every evening.
The West Coast is also known for year-round sightings of wild spinner dolphins. Early morning dolphin-watching tours from nearby Tamarin (around 6:30–7:00 AM) offer the best chance to see them in their natural habitat.
- Best for: Honeymooners, photographers, and sunset lovers
3. Belle Mare & Trou d’Eau Douce (East Coast)
The east coast is home to some of Mauritius’ most beautiful beaches—long, white, and calm due to the protective reef barrier. Belle Mare is often ranked among the top beaches in the Indian Ocean. Nearby Trou d’Eau Douce is the gateway to the famous Île aux Cerfs, one of the island’s top day trips.
This region also hosts many of Mauritius’ most luxurious resorts, including Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Constance Belle Mare Plage, LUX* Belle Mare, and Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita.
- Best for: Families, luxury travellers, and beach lovers
4. Le Morne & South West
Le Morne Brabant is a dramatic UNESCO World Heritage Site rising 556 metres above the southwest coast. The beach here is one of the most picturesque in Mauritius, with soft white sand, turquoise waters, and the iconic mountain backdrop.
The area is also a global hotspot for kite surfing due to its consistent wind conditions, especially in the channel between Le Morne and Île aux Bénitiers.
Underwater Waterfall:
A famous optical illusion visible only from above, best experienced via helicopter. The aerial views of lagoons and coral reefs are unforgettable.
- Helicopter cost: Rs. 15,000–Rs. 20,000 per person
- Best for: Adventure seekers, honeymooners, and photographers
5. Chamarel & the South
Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earths is one of Mauritius’ most unique attractions, where volcanic soil naturally forms seven distinct colours. Nearby, Chamarel Waterfall drops nearly 100 metres into a lush gorge surrounded by dense greenery.
The drive through Black River Gorges National Park offers Mauritius at its wildest—lush forests, rare wildlife, and dramatic coastal cliffs like Gris Gris, where waves crash forcefully against volcanic rock.
- Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, and explorers
6. Port Louis
Port Louis, the capital city, is best explored in half a day. The Central Market is full of spices, street food, and local crafts, offering a lively cultural experience. The Caudan Waterfront features restaurants, shops, and the Blue Penny Museum, home to two of the world’s rarest stamps.
A short walk away is the UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat, an important heritage site for Indian travellers.
Best Things to Do in Mauritius
Mauritius offers a mix of adventure, relaxation, and luxury experiences suitable for all types of travellers.
Catamaran Cruise to Île aux Cerfs
A full-day catamaran cruise is one of the most popular experiences in Mauritius. It includes snorkelling stops, beach time, BBQ lunch, and sailing through turquoise lagoons.
- Cost: Rs. 3,500–Rs. 5,000 per person
- Best for: Couples, families, and first-time visitors
Dolphin Watching in Tamarin Bay
The West Coast is famous for its resident dolphins. Early morning boat tours offer the best chance to see spinner and bottlenose dolphins in the wild.
- Cost: Rs. 2,500–Rs. 4,000 per person
- Best for: Nature lovers and families
Underwater Sea Walk
A unique activity where you walk on the ocean floor using a special helmet that provides oxygen. No swimming skills are required.
- Cost: Rs. 2,500–Rs. 3,500 per person
- Best for: Non-swimmers and families
Helicopter Tour (Underwater Waterfall View)
A scenic helicopter ride offers a breathtaking view of the famous underwater waterfall illusion near Le Morne, along with lagoons and coral reefs.
- Cost: Rs. 12,000–Rs. 20,000 per person
- Best for: Honeymooners and luxury travellers
Water Sports & Marine Activities
Mauritius is a paradise for water sports, including parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, kitesurfing, and snorkelling. Blue Bay Marine Park is especially known for its coral reefs.
- Cost: Rs. 1,500–Rs. 8,000+ depending on activity
South Mauritius Sightseeing Tour
A full-day tour covering Chamarel, Black River Gorges, Le Morne, and Gris Gris—ideal for experiencing Mauritius beyond beaches.
- Cost: Rs. 5,000–Rs. 8,000 per vehicle
- Best for: First-time visitors and families

Indian Food in Mauritius – What to Expect
Mauritius is one of the most India-friendly food destinations in the Indian Ocean. Here’s what you can expect:
What you will find easily:
- Dholl puri: The island’s most popular street food—thin flatbread stuffed with yellow split pea paste, served with curry, chutney, and pickles. Affordable and widely available.
- Biryani: Chicken, mutton, and vegetable biryani are available across local restaurants.
- Roti & curry: Common in Creole-Indian eateries across towns and coastal areas.
- Banana leaf thali: Found in Port Louis and areas with strong Tamil-Mauritian communities like Quatre Bornes and Vacoas.
- Vegetarian options: Widely available in resorts and easy to navigate even at local eateries.
For Jain travellers:
Mauritius is relatively easy to manage for Jain food compared to many international destinations. No onion–no garlic meals can usually be arranged in advance at 4-star and 5-star resorts if communicated beforehand. Travel planners often coordinate this before arrival to ensure confirmation.
Shopping in Mauritius
Mauritius offers a fun mix of local markets and modern shopping areas where you can find souvenirs, handicrafts, and unique island products.
Best Markets
- Port Louis Central Market – The most vibrant local market, ideal for spices, souvenirs, and street shopping
- Caudan Waterfront – A modern shopping area with branded stores, handicrafts, and souvenir shops
- Grand Baie Bazaar – A popular tourist market known for beachwear, crafts, and casual shopping
What to Buy
- Vanilla tea, local spices, and flavoured products
- Handcrafted wooden ship models (a Mauritius speciality)
- Rum and tropical island souvenirs
- Textiles, sarongs, and beachwear
Mauritius Safety Tips for Indian Travellers
Mauritius is one of the safest Indian Ocean island destinations. Crime against tourists is rare. Standard precautions apply:
- Petty theft is the primary risk at crowded beaches and markets. Keep bags zipped and phones in front pockets.
- Sea safety: Swim only in designated lagoon areas; the open ocean on the south and east coasts can have dangerous currents. Flags at beaches indicate safety levels; always check before entering water at unfamiliar beaches
- Water sports operators: Only use licensed operators; your hotel can recommend vetted providers. Avoid individuals approaching you on the beach
- Sun: UV index in Mauritius is extremely high year-round. Apply SPF 50 before any beach or water activity; reapply every 2 hours
- Emergency number: 999 (Police), 114 (Ambulance), 115 (Fire)
- Indian High Commission in Mauritius: +230 208 3775

We had been to Mauritius for our honeymoon in December. Mauritius is a wonderful place and there a lot of places to cover. The entire trip was planned by Pickurtrail and the trip was very comfortable with a good luxury hotel and the cars provided to go around the place was also good. Initially we had issue with hotel booking and Pickurtrail took up the issue and had offered to refund. For Mauritius it is better to do a research by yourself on the places u want to visit and by co ordinating with pick ur trail to make the best of it. Good job by Akash and Ayushi on owning the responsibility for the issue and making sure the issue is not carry forwarded for the rest of the days.

My husband and I travelled to the Maldives with PYT in 2025 and to Mauritius in 2026, and we're already convinced we'll be planning all our future trips with them. Once you've fixed the destination in your mind, PYT takes care of everything else. Their customer support is the best I've ever experienced, the team is well-informed, kind, and attentive, and they remember even the smallest details and preferences. Every trip is customised to make the experience feel effortless and elevated, right from the stay to the activities. There's room to personalise absolutely everything! I'd love to mention a few names. Shrishty was my first point of contact for the Mauritius trip, and she matched our excitement and enthusiasm from the very start. She listened carefully to our likes and preferences and made sure the trip was planned to perfection. Before the trip begins, PYT creates a dedicated WhatsApp group with multiple team members to ensure round-the-clock support. You may never actually need it, since the trip is planned so well, but just knowing that help is a message away brings real peace of mind. They also shared daily updates on the group about pick-up timings and the day's agenda, so we always knew when to be ready, what to pack, and what to expect. Shreyah would call every evening to check in on how the day went and whether we needed anything. Her daily follow-ups made us feel so well taken care of and gave the entire trip a premium feel throughout our time in Mauritius. If you're looking for a hassle-free trip that still gives you real say and independence over your vacation, PYT is the tour operator to go to!

We had went to Mauritius trip using Pickyourtrail as our partner. Trip planning and recommendations are really good . Arrangements were on time and executed on time. Everything was perfectly fine. Just one suggestion that there are few activities that can only be booked at site and there are few activities that can be prebooked. In case of casella walk with lion we wanted to explore but we didnt know we can prebook and tickets were not available when we got to know about that . So its better to add that to your recommendations or explained by trip handler so that you can choose to pre book that. Normally people dont know what activities are there until they arrive on site. So its better to recommend few unique experiences before hand. Rest everything Is fine. Everything was handled well. It was tension free trip and a memorable one.

My trip to Mauritius was very pleasant and safe. We had a lovely time. Thanks the entire Pick Your Trail Team who made it happen. I'd like to mention the names of Divya and Ambika who were my point of contacts; They did fantastic jobs. I rate the whole experience 5! I'll use Pick Your Trail again!
