Sri Lanka’s Hill Country is famous for its misty mountains, rolling tea plantations, waterfalls, and scenic train journeys. Ella is a relaxed hill town known for the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak, and stunning sunrise viewpoints, while Nuwara Eliya offers cool weather, colonial charm, tea factories, and landscapes often compared to Ooty or Munnar. Together, Ella and Nuwara Eliya form one of the most scenic parts of any Sri Lanka holiday packages from India.

Walking along the Galle Fort ramparts at sunset is one of the most iconic experiences in any Sri Lanka tour package.

Just a short drive away, Unawatuna offers golden beaches, calm swimming waters, beachfront cafés, and a laid-back tropical atmosphere that makes it especially popular with couples and honeymooners. Together, Galle and Unawatuna perfectly combine history, luxury, and beach relaxation on Sri Lanka’s south coast.

5. Mirissa and the South Coast

Between November and April, Mirissa becomes one of the best places in the world for blue whale and dolphin watching cruises, making it a major highlight of many Sri Lanka holiday packages.

Travellers looking for quieter beaches can head to Tangalle for a more peaceful coastal escape, while Bentota is ideal for luxury resorts, water sports, and family-friendly beach holidays on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast.

Early morning and evening game drives provide the best wildlife viewing experiences, making Yala a major highlight of Sri Lanka tour packages with Yala National part for nature lovers and families.

Travellers looking for a quieter safari experience can also explore Wilpattu National Park, known for its scenic landscapes and excellent leopard sightings away from larger crowds.

7. Colombo

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital city, blending colonial heritage, modern cafés, luxury hotels, local markets, and a growing food scene. For Indian travellers, the city feels both familiar and exciting, with Tamil and Sinhala culture, South Indian influences, and excellent seafood restaurants across the city. Popular attractions include Pettah Market, Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, and the National Museum of Sri Lanka. Neighbourhoods like Colombo 7 and Cinnamon Gardens are known for boutique cafés, rooftop bars, shopping, and contemporary art spaces, making Colombo an ideal starting point for any Sri Lanka itinerary.

Sri Lanka’s east coast offers a quieter and more offbeat side of the island, best visited between May and September. Trincomalee and Nilaveli are known for white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, whale watching, and snorkelling at Pigeon Island Marine National Park. The region also has a strong Tamil cultural influence, with the iconic Koneswaram Temple overlooking the sea. Further south, Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s top surfing destination, popular for its laid-back vibe, beach cafés, and international traveller scene.

9. Ramayana Trail in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka holds deep spiritual significance for Indian travellers through its connection to the Ramayana. According to Hindu mythology, several important events from the epic took place across the island, making the Ramayana Trail one of the most meaningful cultural and religious experiences in Sri Lanka tour packages. Key sites include the Sita Amman Temple in Nuwara Eliya, believed to be linked to Ashok Vatika where Sita was held captive, Ravana Cave near Ella, Divurumpola Temple associated with Sita’s Agni Pariksha, and the sacred Koneswaram Temple in Trincomalee. The Ramayana Trail is especially popular among families, spiritual travellers, and South Indian visitors looking to combine mythology, history, and scenic travel experiences within a single Sri Lanka trip.

Do Indians Need a Visa for Sri Lanka?

Indian passport holders require an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter Sri Lanka. The great news: since September 2024, the Sri Lankan government has made the ETA entirely free for Indian citizens, and has confirmed this arrangement continues through 2026.

Detail Information
ETA Requirement Mandatory for Indian citizens - apply online before travel
ETA Cost Free for Indian passport holders (government fee waived since May 25, 2026)
Validity 30 days from date of arrival; double-entry permitted
Maximum Stay 30 days per visit (extendable up to 270 days at Colombo immigration)
Processing Time Usually within a few hours; occasionally up to 24 hours

How Much Does a Sri Lanka Trip Cost from India?

Sri Lanka is among the most affordable international destinations for Indian travellers, comparable in cost to a good domestic Indian holiday, but with the experience of a genuinely foreign country. The favourable INR–LKR exchange rate (1 INR ≈ 3.40 LKR as of 2026) means Indian travellers get substantial value.

Trip Type Duration Cost Per Person (Approx.) Inclusions
Budget 5N/6D ₹28,000–₹40,000 3-star hotels, breakfast, shared or AC bus transfers, and major attractions
Mid-Range 7N/8D ₹45,000–₹75,000 4-star hotels, breakfast + some dinners, private AC vehicle, key sightseeing
Premium 8N/9D ₹80,000–₹1,10,000 4-star+ hotels and boutique stays, most meals, private vehicle, all major attractions, Yala safari
Luxury 9N/10D ₹1,20,000–₹2,00,000+ Luxury properties (Ceylon Tea Trails, Amangalla, Wild Coast Tented Lodge), all meals, private guide

*Costs above are approximate, per person on a twin-sharing basis, land only (excluding international flights). Peak season (December–February) and school holiday periods are typically 20–30% more expensive. Prices last updated May 2026.

What Affects Your Sri Lanka Trip Cost?

  • Hotel Category: The gap between budget guesthouses and luxury properties is wide in Sri Lanka. A modest Ella guesthouse costs approximately LKR 5,000–8,000 (₹1,470–₹2,350) per night; Amangalla in Galle Fort costs USD 800–1,200+ (₹66,000–₹1,00,000+) per night. Pickyourtrail matches hotel selection to your budget across the full range.
  • Private Vehicle vs Shared Transport: A dedicated private AC vehicle with driver adds approximately ₹5,000–₹8,000 per day to your package cost, but transforms the flexibility and comfort of your trip.
  • Travel Season: December–February is peak season for most of Sri Lanka's tourist circuit. Prices for accommodation in beach towns and Galle Fort rise significantly.
  • Activities: Yala game drives, whale watching, Sigiriya entry, and scenic train reservations represent meaningful additions to factor into the total budget.
  • Flight Fares: Chennai and Kochi to Colombo flights are among the most affordable international routes from India, return fares from ₹7,000–₹20,000 depending on season and advance booking.

Practical Tips for Indian Travellers in Sri Lanka

  • Apply for the free ETA before you fly. It takes five minutes, and approval usually comes within hours. Always apply through the official site to avoid unnecessary agent fees.
  • Book the Kandy–Ella train 30 days in advance. First-class Observation Saloon and second-class reserved seats sell out extremely fast for peak dates. This is non-negotiable if you want a reserved seat.
  • Carry USD, not INR. Indian Rupees are not officially exchangeable in Sri Lanka. Convert to USD in India, then exchange to LKR at Colombo city banks or authorised money changers outside the airport.
  • Dress modestly at temples and cultural sites. Shoulders and knees should be covered; both men and women are required to remove footwear before entering Buddhist temples. A light scarf or shawl in your bag solves this on any given day.
  • Bring insect repellent for wildlife areas. Yala, Minneriya, Wilpattu, and the Cultural Triangle all have mosquitoes, particularly during and after monsoon months.
  • The nine-arch bridge is best at a specific time. The most photographed view of Ella's Nine Arch Bridge shows a train crossing. Check the local train schedule (approximately 9:15 am and 3:30 pm daily, but varies) and position yourself on the surrounding hillside paths 15 minutes early.
  • Hire a guide for Sigiriya. The site is large, the history is extraordinary, and a good guide turns the climb from exercise into one of the most compelling historical experiences in South Asia. Budget approximately LKR 2,000–3,000 (₹590–₹882) for a licensed guide.
  • Check whale watching operators carefully. Book through Sri Lanka Tourist Board-certified operators with good environmental practice reviews. Some operators crowd the whales; responsible operators maintain respectful distances.

Had an amazing experience with PYT for our Sri Lanka trip. Right from planning to execution, everything was handled seamlessly. A big thanks to Kamali for putting together a well-balanced itinerary that perfectly covered all key places without feeling rushed. Ragul ensured a smooth pre-boarding experience, guiding us clearly through all the requirements and making the start of the trip completely stress-free. During the trip, Harikrishna was extremely responsive and supportive. It was reassuring to have someone available at all times for any queries or coordination, this really made a difference. The overall arrangements, driver, vehicle, travel flow, and experiences, were excellent. Everything was well-organized and executed professionally. The only area of improvement would be one of the hotel stays in Bentota, which didnt meet expectations. Apart from that, the entire trip was fantastic. Overall, a great experience with PYT. Would definitely recommend them for a hassle-free and well-managed vacation.

We chose Pick Your Trails for our Sri Lanka holiday to celebrate our babys first birthday, and it was an excellent decision. The trip was thoughtfully planned and well executed, making the entire experience smooth and stress-free for us as parents. There was a minor check-in issue at the Bentota hotel on the first day from the hotels side, but apart from that, everything was handled efficiently by the team. Special thanks to Austin for the planning and to Adithyan, Nimmy, Abhinaya, and Devi for their timely support throughout the trip. The driver was polite, the stays were comfortable, and the journey felt seamless overall. It truly became a memorable first birthday celebration for our baby.

Id like to share my experience with PickYourTrail. Overall, it was a good experiencethough with a little more planning on my part, it could have been great. I dont fault the team, as I booked the trip on very short notice and should have done some additional research myself. That said, the teams support and assistance were excellent throughout. A special thanks to Rishika, my first point of contact, who helped plan the trip, and to Adithyan, who provided 24/7 support while I was in Sri Lanka. My queries were addressed almost immediately, which made the journey smooth and stress-free. Great team, I would definitely recommend them for booking any travel plans!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Sri Lanka tour package from India for first-time visitors?

The classic first-timer Sri Lanka package is a 7-night 8-day itinerary covering Colombo (1 night) + Sigiriya/Dambulla (2 nights) + Kandy (1 night) + Ella (2 nights, including the scenic train from Kandy) + Galle and Mirissa (2 nights). It covers the cultural highlights, the iconic hill country train, and beach time on the south coast without feeling rushed.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Indian passport holders need a free ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), not a traditional visa. The government fee has been waived for Indian citizens since September 2024. Apply online at eta.gov.lk; it takes five minutes, approval typically arrives within hours, and you should print the confirmation email to carry with your passport.

How many days are enough for a Sri Lanka trip?

6 to 8 days is ideal for a first-time trip covering the classic circuit (Colombo, Cultural Triangle, Hill Country, South Coast). 9 to 10 days allows proper beach time or an east coast extension. 12+ days is recommended for a full island experience, including Trincomalee and Jaffna. The 7-night 8-day format is our most popular Sri Lanka package from India.

Is Sri Lanka safe for Indian tourists?

Sri Lanka is safe for Indian tourists and has been since the post-2022 economic crisis stabilisation. Tourist areas, Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Ella, Mirissa, and Sigiriya, operate normally. Standard travel awareness applies. Sri Lanka's tourist industry is heavily oriented toward Indian visitors, and the infrastructure, signage, and hospitality reflect this. India is currently the single largest source market for Sri Lankan tourism.

Can I combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives?

Yes, this is one of the most popular multi-destination combinations from India. Direct flights connect Colombo to Malé in approximately 1.5 hours. A classic 10–12 day India–Sri Lanka–Maldives itinerary typically spends 6–7 nights in Sri Lanka and 3–4 nights in the Maldives. Pickyourtrail builds seamless itineraries covering both countries, handling the inter-island flight and water taxi transfer logistics.
