In the western part of the island country of Mauritius, the biggest national park, the Black River Gorges National Park is located. It is the largest protected forest of Mauritius offering over 50 km of trails, the National Park covers 2% of the total landmass of the island country.
Once the park was used as a hunting ground but in 1994, scientists identified endemic bird species and flowering plants on this site, since then the site has been given the status of a national park and protects the pristine rain forests of the country. Currently, 700 species of indigenous plants are found in this national park, but some of them have been destroyed by the introduction of foreign plant species.
