Best South Africa Tour Packages for Every Travel Style

South Africa Honeymoon Packages

South Africa is genuinely one of the world's great honeymoon destinations. It combines dramatic natural scenery, luxury private lodge experiences, excellent wine, and genuine privacy in ways that more crowded destinations cannot. Our South Africa honeymoon packages are designed around private safari experiences, wine estate dinners, and boutique coastal stays, far removed from generic honeymoon circuits.

Our most popular South Africa package for couples is a 10-night circuit covering Cape Town (3N) → Winelands/Franschhoek (1N) → Garden Route (2N) → Kruger/Private Reserve (2–3N), combining oceanfront sunsets, vineyard candlelight dinners, and private game drives.

  • Starting Price: ₹38,886 per person (land only, without international flights)
  • Typical inclusions: Boutique hotel + private lodge stays, private safari vehicle, couples' spa at lodge, wine estate dinner, transfers throughout

South Africa Safari Packages

Safari is the reason most Indian travellers choose South Africa. The options range from self-catering rest camps inside Kruger to ultra-luxury private lodges in Sabi Sands, where exclusive traversing rights deliver leopard and lion sightings at a frequency that's hard to match elsewhere.

Other notable South African safari destinations:

  • Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (KwaZulu-Natal): Best place in Africa to see white rhino; less visited than Kruger
  • Madikwe Game Reserve (North West Province): Big Five, malaria-free, excellent for families with children under 12
  • Pilanesberg National Park: Malaria-free, 3 hours from Johannesburg, good value, often included in shorter South Africa packages from India
  • Addo Elephant National Park (Eastern Cape): Highest elephant concentration in South Africa; easy to combine with the Garden Route

Our South Africa safari tour package also covers Johannesburg (2 nights), Pilanesberg (2 nights), Knysna (1 night), Skukuza (2 nights) and Sun City (2 nights).

Starting Price: ₹84,589 (land only)

South Africa Luxury Tour Packages

South Africa's luxury travel market is well-developed and, compared to equivalent luxury experiences in the Maldives or Europe, represents strong value for Indian travellers. Luxury South Africa holiday packages from India are built entirely around your preferences.

Luxury South African experiences include the following:

  • Private game lodge stays at Singita Sabi Sand, Londolozi, or &Beyond Ngala (rates from R20,000–R80,000/couple/night, all-inclusive)
  • The Blue Train: a 27-hour luxury rail journey from Pretoria to Cape Town, often called one of the world's great rail experiences
  • Helicopter flight over Cape Point and the Cape Peninsula
  • Exclusive wine estate stays in Franschhoek with private cellar access
  • Private Cape Winelands tour with a sommelier guide
  • Michelin-level dining at The Test Kitchen (Cape Town) or La Colombe

Starting price: ₹117,302 (land only)

South Africa Family Tour Packages

South Africa works well for Indian families, particularly if children are 6 years and older. Many private lodges have a minimum age restriction (typically 6–12 years) for open-vehicle night game drives, so choosing the right reserve matters.

Malaria-free reserves for families: Madikwe Game Reserve, Pilanesberg National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park are all malaria-free, which removes one significant concern for families travelling with young children.

Top family experiences in South Africa:

  • Pilanesberg game drives from Sun City resort (easy, well-organised, child-friendly)
  • uShaka Marine World, Durban — A large marine theme park with aquarium, water slides, and dolphin shows
  • Boulders Beach penguin colony, Simon's Town — African penguins in a relaxed beach setting; children's favourite
  • Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town — Excellent for children; touch pools, sharks, and ragged-tooth rays
  • Addo Elephant National Park — Close elephant encounters are consistently the highlight for children
  • Cango Wildlife Ranch, Oudtshoorn — Cheetah interaction experiences with safety-prioritised handlers

A 10-night South Africa family package covering Johannesburg (1N) + Pilanesberg/Sun City (2N) + Cape Town (4N) + Garden Route (3N).

Starting Price: ₹70,938 per person (land only).

Best Places to Visit in South Africa

1. Cape Town

For most first-time visitors, Cape Town is the highlight of any South Africa trip. Surrounded by mountains, beaches, and vineyards, it offers the perfect introduction to the country. The city's biggest attraction is Table Mountain. Still, visitors can also explore Boulders Beach's penguin colony, the Cape of Good Hope, colourful Bo-Kaap, and the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

  • Minimum stay: 3–4 nights.
  • Don't miss: Signal Hill sunset, Chapman's Peak Drive, and a day trip to Cape Point.

2. Kruger National Park

Kruger is the most visited game reserve in Africa for good reason. At nearly 20,000 sq km, it holds over 147 mammal species, including all Big Five, 517 bird species, and some of the most accessible wildlife viewing in Africa. The park has 11 main rest camps ranging from basic huts to comfortable chalets, an extensive tarred and gravel road network suitable for standard rental cars, and excellent infrastructure overall.

  • Best time to visit: June to September for wildlife sightings.
  • Minimum stay: 2–3 nights.

3. Garden Route

If you enjoy road trips, the Garden Route is one of South Africa's most rewarding journeys. This scenic coastal region combines beaches, forests, lagoons, and charming towns such as Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. It also offers adventure activities, whale watching, and beautiful national parks.

  • Minimum stay: 2–3 nights.
  • Highlights: Knysna Heads, Tsitsikamma National Park, and Plettenberg Bay beaches.

4. Johannesburg and Soweto

While many travellers simply transit through Johannesburg, the city offers valuable insight into South Africa's history. The Apartheid Museum and Soweto provide a deeper understanding of the country's journey to democracy and the legacy of Nelson Mandela. Most South Africa packages treat Johannesburg as a 1-night transit before flying to the bush or Cape Town, which is adequate. If you add 2 nights, the Gold Reef City theme park and Constitution Hill are worth the extra time.

  • Minimum stay: 1–2 nights.
  • Highlights: Apartheid Museum, Mandela House, and Constitution Hill.

5. Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

Located less than an hour from Cape Town, the Cape Winelands offer vineyard landscapes, gourmet restaurants, and charming historic towns. Even non-wine drinkers enjoy the region for its scenery, food, and relaxed atmosphere. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch both have multiple restaurants with strong vegetarian menus, which is less common elsewhere in South Africa.

  • Minimum stay: 1–2 nights.
  • Highlights: Wine tram experiences, vineyard lunches, and mountain views.

6. Drakensberg Mountains

The Drakensberg range (called uKhahlamba by the Zulu, meaning "Barrier of Spears") forms a dramatic escarpment along KwaZulu-Natal's western border. The mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, containing the world's largest collection of San (Bushman) rock art, over 35,000 paintings across 600 documented sites.

  • Minimum stay: 2 nights.
  • Highlights: Scenic hikes, rock art sites, and panoramic viewpoints.

7. Durban and KwaZulu-Natal

Home to Africa's largest Indian community, Durban feels culturally familiar yet uniquely South African. The city is famous for its beaches, markets, and Indian-influenced cuisine, while the wider KwaZulu-Natal region offers wildlife reserves and Zulu cultural experiences. Beyond the city, KwaZulu-Natal offers Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (the oldest game reserve in Africa, excellent for rhino), the Midlands Meander craft and food route, and Zulu cultural villages that offer authentic engagement with South Africa's largest ethnic group.

  • Minimum stay: 2–3 nights.
  • Highlights: Victoria Street Market, Durban beachfront, and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

Best Things to Do in South Africa

Safari and Wildlife

  • Big Five game drives, Kruger and private reserves: The standard morning drive (pre-dawn to 9–10 AM) and evening drive (3–4 PM to after sunset, with a spotlight) are the two daily wildlife viewing windows. Budget a minimum of two full days for meaningful Kruger sightings.
  • Shark cage diving, Gansbaai: Approximately 2.5 hours from Cape Town, Gansbaai is one of the world's most reliable locations for great white shark encounters in the wild. Cage dives typically last 3–5 hours in total, including the boat trip, and cost approximately ₹8,000–₹12,000 per person.
  • Whale watching, Hermanus: Land-based from the cliff path (free) or boat-based (₹2,500–₹4,500 per person).

Note: Great white shark seasonal migration patterns affect availability. September to March is generally peak season.

Adventure Activities

  • Bungee jumping, Bloukrans Bridge: 216 metres, Garden Route. ₹4,500–₹5,500 per person.
  • Zipline, Storms River: Tsitsikamma treetop canopy tour above the indigenous forest.
  • Surfing, Jeffreys Bay: J-Bay is one of the world's top surfing destinations and hosts an annual WSL Championship Tour event. Surf lessons for beginners available (₹2,500–₹4,000).
  • Hiking, Table Mountain: Several marked trail options of varying difficulty. The Platteklip Gorge route (3–4 hours return) is the most popular for visitors. No guide is required, but cloud cover can develop rapidly — check the weather before starting.

Culture and History

  • Robben Island, Cape Town: The island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Tours include a ferry crossing and a guided visit led by a former political prisoner. Book in advance; departures sell out days ahead. Approximately ₹1,800 per person (foreign visitor rate).
  • Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg: Award-winning museum that reconstructs the apartheid era through film, photographs, documents, and audio. Budget 3–4 hours minimum. Entry approximately ₹700 per person.
  • Mandela House, Soweto: The home where Mandela lived with Winnie from 1946 to 1961, preserved as a museum. Vilakazi Street is the only road in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
  • District Six Museum, Cape Town: Documents the forced removal of 60,000 residents from District Six under apartheid's Group Areas Act. One of the most emotionally resonant cultural museums in the country.

Best Time to Visit South Africa

South Africa's seasons are the reverse of India's; summer runs from November to February, winter from June to August. For Indian travellers, this matters because the best time for a South Africa safari is Indian summer (May–September), while the best time for Cape Town and the Garden Route is the Indian winter (November–February).

Region

Best Months

What You Get

Kruger & safari parks

May–September

Dry season, thinned vegetation, wildlife at waterholes. July–August coldest nights (5–10°C). September: warmth returns, best wildlife + landscape balance

Cape Town & Garden Route

October–March

Dry, sunny, 20–28°C. Peak tourist season, higher prices in December–January

Hermanus whale watching

June–November

Southern right whales in Walker Bay. Peak: August–October

Winelands harvest

February–April

Wine harvest season, cooler temperatures, beautiful vine colours

Budget travel

April–May, September

Shoulder season across most regions, good wildlife + reasonable prices

Key takeaway for Indian travellers: If you can travel May–September, do the safari first and Cape Town second. If you can only travel November–March, prioritise Cape Town and the Garden Route, and consider Pilanesberg or Madikwe (malaria-free, year-round) for a shorter safari leg rather than Kruger in the thick-bush season.

How to Reach South Africa from India

There are no direct nonstop flights from India to South Africa. All routes involve one connection, typically through Dubai, Doha, Nairobi, or Addis Ababa.

Best booking strategy: Book international flights 12–16 weeks in advance. Emirates via Dubai and Qatar Airways via Doha typically offer the most competitive fares. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is often cheapest but adds flight time.

Primary entry airports:

  • O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (JNB): South Africa's largest international gateway; almost all Indian flights land here. Well-organised, large, and has good domestic connections to Cape Town and Kruger Mpumalanga.
  • Cape Town International Airport (CPT): Some carriers fly directly here from Dubai or Doha; worth checking if your itinerary starts in Cape Town.

Getting around South Africa:

  • Domestic flights: Johannesburg to Cape Town is the most-used domestic route. FlySafair, Airlink, and South African Airways operate multiple daily services.
  • Car rental: South Africa drives on the left. Roads are excellent by regional standards; the N2 Garden Route and N1 to the Winelands are straightforward. For Kruger, a standard sedan is adequate on tarred roads; a 4WD is only needed for gravel roads in more remote areas.
  • Private transfers: Included in Pickyourtrail packages; recommended for airport transfers and intercity connections where time efficiency matters.
  • Uber and Bolt: Available and reliable in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. More reliable than hailing street taxis. Always use app-based services.

Currency, Money & Payments in South Africa

South Africa uses the South African Rand (ZAR). As of June 2026, 1 ZAR ≈ ₹5.84, meaning 10,000 ZAR ≈ ₹58,387

Practical currency tips for Indian travellers:

  • Exchange INR to USD or EUR in India before departure; ZAR is not easily exchangeable in India
  • Convert to ZAR on arrival at the airport or at ABSA/Standard Bank ATMs in Johannesburg or Cape Town
  • Forex bureaux at V&A Waterfront and large malls offer competitive rates
  • Credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are widely accepted in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and lodges; carry ZAR cash for markets, smaller townships, and rural Garden Route stops
  • Inform your bank before travelling to avoid card blocks on international transactions
  • Currency apps like XE.com or Wise are useful for real-time conversion on the road

South Africa Food Guide for Indian Travellers

South African cuisine reflects the country's complexity. There is Afrikaner farm food, Cape Malay cooking, Zulu and Xhosa traditional dishes, Indian-influenced Durban food, and the full range of international cuisine in Cape Town.

South African Dishes Worth Trying

  • Bobotie: Often considered the national dish, it features spiced minced meat (usually beef or lamb) baked with a savoury egg-based custard on top.
  • Bunny Chow: A famous street-food staple originating from Durban's Indian community. It consists of a hollowed-out quarter loaf of white bread filled with rich, flavourful curry (mutton, lamb, chicken, or bean).
  • Braai (Shisa Nyama): You'll find a massive variety of meats grilled over open coals, including boerewors (a heavily spiced traditional sausage), lamb chops, and marinated steaks.
  • Pap & Chakalaka: Pap is a thick, hearty porridge made from white maize meal, serving as a staple carbohydrate across many South African households.
  • Biltong & Droëwors: Biltong is cured, dried, and spiced meat similar to jerky but typically softer, thicker, and richer in flavour. Droëwors is the same spiced meat mixture formed into dried sausage.
  • Malva Pudding: Made with apricot jam, it is baked and then drenched in a rich cream or butter sauce before serving hot, usually alongside vanilla ice cream or custard.
  • Gatsby: A massive sub-style sandwich native to Cape Town. It’s typically cut into portions and filled with ingredients like chips (fries), meat (such as masala steak), lettuce, and sauces

Food for Indian Vegetarians and Jain Travellers in South Africa

South Africa is a meat-heavy country, and vegetarian options outside Cape Town and Johannesburg require planning.

What works:

  • Cape Town is the easiest city for vegetarians. It has a developed restaurant scene with many restaurants explicitly catering to plant-based diets
  • Indian restaurants in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban serve familiar vegetarian and Jain-friendly food; Durban's Indian quarter is particularly reliable
  • Most safari lodges will prepare vegetarian alternatives to the set menu if notified in advance
  • Jain travellers: carry a Jain meal card in English specifying no root vegetables and no five pungent ingredients. Most upscale lodges and 5-star hotels in Cape Town can accommodate this

What to be realistic about: In smaller towns along the Garden Route and in rural safari areas, vegetarian options at local restaurants often mean pasta, pizza, or salad. It is manageable but not exciting. Plan your main meal experiences for Cape Town and lodge dinners.

Shopping in South Africa

South Africa offers one of the best shopping experiences in Africa, combining modern shopping malls, luxury boutiques, local craft markets, and unique handmade souvenirs. Whether you're looking for premium brands, authentic African art, or gifts to take home, you'll find plenty of options across the country.

What to Buy

  • African Handicrafts: Handmade wooden carvings, beadwork, woven baskets, and tribal art.
  • Jewellery & Diamonds: South Africa is renowned for its diamonds, gold, tanzanite, and gemstone jewellery.
  • South African Wines: World-famous wines from the Cape Winelands make excellent gifts and souvenirs.
  • Rooibos Tea: A uniquely South African herbal tea known for its health benefits.
  • Leather Goods: High-quality leather bags, wallets, belts, and footwear.
  • Local Fashion & Art: Contemporary African fashion, paintings, sculptures, and handmade accessories.

Best Shopping Destinations

  • Cape Town: Ideal for luxury shopping, waterfront boutiques, and artisan markets.
  • Johannesburg: Known for large shopping centres, designer brands, and local craft markets.
  • Durban: Popular for spices, textiles, traditional crafts, and beachfront shopping.

Shopping Tips

  • Bargaining: Negotiation is common at street markets and craft stalls.
  • Payments: Credit and debit cards are accepted at most shops and malls.
  • VAT Refunds: International visitors may claim VAT refunds on eligible purchases when leaving South Africa.
  • Safety: Keep valuables secure and avoid carrying large amounts of cash while shopping.

From sparkling diamonds and award-winning wines to handcrafted African souvenirs, South Africa offers memorable shopping opportunities for every traveller.

Safety Tips for Indian Travellers Visiting South Africa

  • Personal Safety: Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar urban areas.
  • Valuables: Keep jewellery, cameras, and smartphones out of sight in public places.
  • Transport Safety: Use registered taxis, ride-hailing apps, or hotel-arranged transfers whenever possible.
  • Driving: Keep car doors locked and avoid leaving belongings visible inside vehicles.
  • Safari Safety: Follow the ranger's instructions and never approach or feed wild animals.
  • ATM Safety: Use ATMs in secure locations such as banks and shopping malls.
  • Document Security: Carry copies of your passport and keep the original in a safe place.
  • Water & Food: Drink bottled water when unsure of local water quality.
  • Travel Insurance: Purchase comprehensive travel insurance before departure.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Save local emergency numbers and embassy contacts on your phone.
  • Stay Connected: Use a local SIM card or an international roaming plan for reliable communication.

Health & Travel Insurance

  • Medical Care: South Africa's private hospitals offer excellent healthcare, but treatment costs can be expensive without insurance.
  • Travel Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all Indian travellers visiting South Africa.
  • Medical Coverage: Choose a policy with at least USD 50,000 coverage for medical emergencies and hospitalisation.
  • Emergency Evacuation: Ensure your plan includes medical evacuation, especially if you're visiting remote safari destinations.
  • Trip Protection: Look for coverage for trip cancellations, delays, and interruptions.
  • Baggage Cover: Select a policy that protects against lost, stolen, or delayed luggage.

Malaria in South Africa: What Indian Travellers Should Know

Malaria is present in parts of South Africa, but it is not a countrywide concern. The risk areas are specific:

  • High-risk malaria zones: Kruger National Park, Limpopo province, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal's northern coast (including Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park).
  • Malaria-free safari destinations: Madikwe Game Reserve, Pilanesberg National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, and most of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape game reserves.

For Indian travellers:

  • Consult a travel medicine doctor 4–6 weeks before departure for antimalarial prescription options (typically doxycycline or atovaquone/proguanil)
  • Use DEET-based mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves and trousers from dusk

Book Your South Africa Tour Package

South Africa's premium safari lodges in Sabi Sands and Timbavati operate at near-full occupancy during June–September (peak wildlife season) and December–January. Cape Town hotel rates during the local summer (December–February) rise sharply. Planning 4–6 months ahead is strongly recommended for these windows.

At Pickyourtrail, every South Africa tour package is built around your specific travel dates, budget, pace, and preferred experiences, not a fixed group schedule. From visa guidance and flights to lodge selection, safari transfers, and on-trip support, the planning is handled so you can focus on the experience.

Trip to SA -The itinerary planning was sloppy from start. Couple of swapping of hotels without reasons being said. Due to the swap of hotel in Capetown, things were bit not in favour for tourists. The hotel had no parking and they had paid valet parking. And then the entry and exit of the hotel leads to a square inn with refugees staying there. No complaints on the refugees, but just that they stare at the tourists which we wouldnt feel secure.Miscalculation of driving timings while planning.A practical knowledge on the places will help them probably in planning. The place itself, activities over there, the hospitality by the locals and the support team from PYT were great. South Africa is a beautiful place indeed. Thanks to Sunil, Alex, Preetha and the other support members.

I for India, an Indian Event Management Company from UK Organised a trip for its patrons to South Africa in Dec 2019 for Christmas and New Year. The group had 42 members in total (12 families). The planning started as early as Feb 2019 for the holiday in Dec 2019.Before finalising on Pick Your Trail (PYT), we obtained competitive quotes from various vendors and finally finalised it with PYT based on the professional approach they exhibited, attention to detail and of course competitive pricing.Since Feb 2019 to Dec 2019 we had a very pleasant journey with PYT – especially Sanjay in planning the itinery, hotel, sight seeing, food choices and Sanjay was able to cater to all our requirements. We had regular conference calls at various stages to make sure all the things were addressed.PYT helped us in choosing the right partners based on our requirements and made the holiday an excellent experience. We are a large Indian community in UK and would definitely recommend PYT to our wider circles and patrons. We are also planning our Dec 2020 group holiday with them.

Wonderful experience! A very pro active team both before and during the tour. We got in touch with PYT to plan our honeymoon trip to South Africa. They were very pro active in planning out an itinerary which fits our budget and also made prompt changes as we suggested. Their support during the trip is also commendable, someone is always in touch to answer last minute queries eg identifying indian restaurants around your hotel etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the price of a South Africa tour package from India?

The price of a South Africa tour package from India typically starts from around ₹35,983 onwards, depending on the departure city, travel season, hotel category, safari experience, and trip duration. Budget travellers can expect to spend ₹1.5–2.5 lakh per person for an 8–10-day trip, while luxury South Africa holidays may exceed ₹6 lakh per person.

Q: What is included in a typical South Africa tour itinerary?

Most South Africa tour packages include accommodation, airport transfers, selected meals (usually breakfast), sightseeing tours, safari game drives, domestic transportation, visa assistance, and 24/7 travel support. Popular itineraries cover destinations such as Cape Town, Kruger National Park, the Garden Route, Johannesburg, and the Cape Winelands.

Q: Do South Africa tour packages include safari experiences?

Yes. Safari experiences are one of the main highlights of South Africa tour packages. Depending on the itinerary, packages may include guided game drives in Kruger National Park, Pilanesberg National Park, Madikwe Game Reserve, Addo Elephant National Park, or private reserves such as Sabi Sands.

Q: What are the top safari parks included in South Africa tour packages?

The most popular safari destinations included in South Africa tour packages are Kruger National Park, Pilanesberg National Park, Madikwe Game Reserve, Addo Elephant National Park, and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. These parks offer opportunities to spot the Big Five and experience South Africa's diverse wildlife.

Q: Do Indian citizens need a visa for South Africa?

Yes. Indian passport holders must obtain a South African tourist visa before travelling. Visa-on-arrival is not available for Indian citizens. Applicants generally need a valid passport, financial proof, return flight tickets, hotel bookings, travel insurance, and other supporting documents. Processing usually takes 10–15 working days.

Q: What is the best time to visit South Africa from India?

The best time depends on your travel interests. May to September is ideal for wildlife safaris as animals gather around water sources during the dry season. For Cape Town, the Garden Route, beaches, and outdoor activities, October to March offers warm and sunny weather.

Q: How many days are enough for a South Africa trip?

A minimum of 7–9 days is recommended to experience South Africa's major highlights. However, 10–13 days allows travellers to explore Cape Town, the Cape Winelands, the Garden Route, and a safari destination such as Kruger National Park at a more relaxed pace.

Q: Is malaria a concern for travel to South Africa from India?

Malaria is present in certain regions of South Africa, including Kruger National Park, Limpopo Province, and parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal. However, many popular safari destinations such as Madikwe Game Reserve, Pilanesberg National Park, and Addo Elephant National Park are malaria-free. Travellers visiting malaria-risk areas should consult a doctor before departure and take appropriate preventive measures.

Q: What is the average budget for a 7-day South Africa tour package from India?

For a 7-day South Africa trip, travellers should budget approximately ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh per person, including international flights, accommodation, sightseeing, transfers, visa fees, travel insurance, and selected safari experiences. Luxury trips with premium lodges and private safaris can cost significantly more.
