Sakenan temple, also called Pura Dalem Sakenan, is one of the most sacred and best places to visit in Denpasar. Located about 10 kilometers from the hustle and bustle of the city, solace seekers can delve deeper into its peaceful atmosphere. This temple was built in 1001 AD and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is a shrine to Lord Shiva and is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Bali. It is worth adding to your Bali vacation package.

History and More About Sakenan Temple

Mpu Kuturan, the high priest, established one of the best temples in Bali, Sakenan Temple. He arrived in Bali in AD 1001, before the fall of the Majapahit Empire, on a mission to rebuild the Balinese communities' socio-religious components.

The temple is divided into two portions. The largest had previously undergone modifications, while a smaller section retains many original features. The original temple was made of limestone and coral obtained and cut to shape from the island's reefs. The temple compound has large, towering trees that testify to its history. They are dressed in checkered linens and are thought to be the homes of the temple's guardian spirits.

Hundreds of pilgrims from numerous village temples in southern Denpasar go to Sakenan Temple for its 210-day Piodalan temple jubilee. It coincides with the holy day of Kuningan, which falls around 10 days after the Galungan Day celebrations, another important Balinese Hindu holiday. Prior to the reclamations in the 1990s, pilgrims would walk across mangrove woods at low tide with their old heirlooms and sacred temple goods towards Serangan. Traditional outriggers ferry the audience across the seas during high tide. The landmass is now easily accessible by car through a 110-meter bridge, and the colorful and unique boat journeys are now a distant memory.

As they arrive, some worshippers go to Pura Susunan Wadon, a shrine about a half-kilometer to the east of the main Sakenan Temple complex. The temple is one of the top attractions in Bali and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to explore the culture of Bali.

The best time to visit Sakenan Temple

Piodalan is the best time to visit the Bali temple to see the colorful festival and traditions. In the 210-day Pawukon calendar, it falls on every Kliwon Kuningan Saturday. During the festival, the villagers will perform ritual dances.

On other days, the temple remains open 24 hours a day, and you can visit anytime.

Special Note:

You must enter the temple in appropriate temple attire, as with every Bali temple visit - at the very least, a basic sarong and sash around your waist. Instead of stepping over offerings on the ground, try walking around them. Try not to obstruct a procession that is already in motion. Women should also avoid entering temple premises during their periods.
