Chapel Bridge Lucerne (Kapellbrücke): Europe’s Oldest Covered Wooden Bridge in Switzerland

The Chapel Bridge was one of three main covered bridges forming Lucerne's mediaeval defences. The bridge takes its name from the nearby St Peter's Chapel. 

A defining feature of the Chapel Bridge is the series of 17th-century triangular paintings by Hans Heinrich Wägmann. These paintings line the interior ceiling of the bridge and depict scenes from Lucerne’s history and Catholic heritage during the Counter-Reformation.

In August 1993, the Chapel Bridge caught fire, causing extensive damage. The bridge was later rebuilt within months following the fire. 

Chapel Bridge spans the Reuss River in the heart of Lucerne. 

• By Train: Lucerne Hauptbahnhof is the main rail hub, with frequent connections from Zurich (approximately 50 minutes), Bern (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes), and Basel (approximately 1 hour). From the station, the bridge is a short walk of around 5–7 minutes along the lakefront promenade.
• By Bus: Schwanenplatz Bus Station is located nearby, providing easy access from various parts of the city.
• On Foot: The bridge is centrally located and is easily walkable from virtually any hotel in the Old Town or city centre.

• Chapel Bridge is open 24 hours throughout the year. The bridge has no entry fee as the crossing itself is a public pedestrian walkway.
• If you wish to visit nearby attractions such as museums in the area, individual tickets or combination tickets may be required.

The Chapel Bridge sits at the centre of Lucerne's most walkable historic district, making it a natural starting point for exploring the city.

• Old Town Lucerne (Altstadt): The Old Town offers charming sights, including a riverside boulevard lined with restaurants and colourful buildings adorned with vibrant murals.
• St. Peter’s Chapel, Lucerne: Located right next to the bridge, this centuries-old Baroque-style marble chapel is adorned with fascinating artwork on its exterior walls and offers a serene interior space.
• Spreuer Bridge (Spreuerbrucke): Lucerne's "other" covered bridge is just a five-minute walk away. 
• Lion Monument: A tribute to the Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution, the Lion Monument is a short walk from the bridge and is one of Lucerne's most moving landmarks.
• Musegg Wall: A well-preserved medieval city wall offering panoramic views over Lucerne, within easy walking distance of the bridge.
• Lake Lucerne: A scenic spot immediately adjacent to the bridge, perfect for boat cruises and lakeside walks with views of the surrounding Alps.

• Best time to visit: Visit at sunrise to avoid crowds or in the evening when the bridge is beautifully lit. Avoid midday in summer.
• Look up: Take a moment to admire the triangular painting panels lining the ceiling. Each panel tells a different chapter of Lucerne's history.
• Flowers: The bridge railings are decorated with seasonal flowers, earning it the nickname "Flower Bridge" among some visitors. 
• Smoking: Smoking is restricted on and around the bridge due to fire safety regulations. There is a fine for smoking anywhere near the bridge.
• Accessibility: The bridge is a flat wooden walkway and is generally accessible.
