History of Viharamahadevi Park
The Viharamahadevi Park is considered as the oldest and the biggest park in Colombo. It is situated near various historical places such as the National Museum, Town Hall, and the Colombo Public Library. This park was built in the reign of the British Colonial Government, it has become center of attraction after the renovation work . The land was donated by Captain Charles Henry de Soysa in order to construct this park. It was initially named as the Victoria Park after Queen Victoria.

The park was used for different purposes during World War II. It holds pride in hosting the British Army and the 17th Brigade of the Australian Army. This park was also used as a cricket ground by the firs class team from 1927 to 1995. The famous match between the touring English team was hosted in this park during the 1930s. The Viharamahadevi Park was then remodelled after World War II into its current form. Post Independence, the park was given its current name, Viharamahadevi Park. This name was given in praise of Queen Viharamahadevi who was the mother of King Dutugemunu.

The gigantic statue of Buddha in the park is a spectacular identity for this park. This park also holds a children’s play area and numerous water fountains. Initially, during the start of the 20th century, the charm of the amusement started to fade. The park, lakes, play area, and the fountains were left without proper maintenance. Later, during the year 2013, the park regained its glow. It was when the Government decided to host the 23rd Commonwealth meeting in Colombo.
Best time to Visit Viharamahadevi Park
This is a year-round place just like the Colombo city itself. You can visit the park at any time of the year. Its welcoming ambience and pleasant climate make this place a frequently visited attraction in Colombo. Visiting the park between June and September is a bad choice as this place receives heavy rains during this season. Do not miss the stunning sunset and sunrise view by the lakeside.
How to reach Viharamahadevi Park
Make use of public bus services to reach the park easily. You can also hire the cool kangaroo cabs, ace cab, or rent a traditional taxi to get there. You can also try your hand in the tuk-tuk rickshaws to have an adventurous ride.
Entry Fees and Opening Hours
The entry fee of Viharamahadevi Park is 20 LKR for adults and for children under the age of 5, there is a discount on the ticket cost.
The park is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

King Kelanitissa of the Kingdom of Kelaniya, had a great respect for a Buddhist preacher, an Arahat, his teacher who had taught the Buddha Dhamma to him and his brother Uttiya. As a result the King made arrangements for the Arahat and his disciple to have breakfast, at his Palace daily.
Both men and women are expected to dress modestly in conservative clothes and expected to remove their foot outside the shrines, temples and sacred places as a sign of respect.
