One main landmark that makes it a must-visit destination is the Paro Taktsang or Tiger's Nest Monastery, a sacred site located on a cliff thousands of feet above the valley bed. Adventure lovers get to enjoy an exhilarating trek up to this monastery, where the trekkers are rewarded with exquisite panoramic views of the Himalayas. Another popular destination that will be loved by all the history buffs is the National Museum of Bhutan, where visitors get to explore the showcasing Bhutanese art, artifacts, and historical relics. For a relaxing evening, take Paro Town and have a relaxing evening and explore the traditional wooden shops and restaurants in the area.

Thimphu

One of the most significant places to go to in Bhutan is the capital and largest city of the country, Thimphu. Some of the most popular attractions in this city include Tashichho Dzong, which is a grand fortress that houses the king’s throne room and offices, and the Buddha Dordenma, a massive statue of Shakyamuni Buddha that overlooks the city and provides a serene atmosphere for reflection. Additionally, for those looking to explore the cultural heritage of the country, make sure to visit the Folk Heritage Museum, Textile Museum, and the lively Weekend Market, where locals sell fresh produce, crafts and spices.

Punakha

Another major destination to visit is the former capital of the country, Punakha, due to its lush green valleys and the historical significance that it holds. One major landmark in this destination is the Punakha Dzong, located between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This is one of the most beautiful dzongs in the world and is breathtaking during spring as it is surrounded by blooming jacaranda trees. You can also visit the suspension bridge near Punakha Dzong, where you get a mix of adventure and exquisite beauty all at once. 

Phobjikha Valley

The Phobjikha Valley is one of the best places to see in Bhutan for all the nature lovers visiting this destination, as it is known for its scenic beauty, having a peaceful environment for everyone to relax and also being home to the endangered black-necked cranes during winter. The Gangtey Monastery provides a surreal experience to visitors as they get to immerse themselves in the splendid views overlooking the vast valley that can be reached by trekking up the Gangtey Nature Trail, which is an experience by itself. Visitors taking this trail get to explore and learn about the different flora and fauna of the country while also learning about the rural life of Bhutan.

Bumthang Valley

If you want to explore the cultural heart of the country, then make sure to visit the Bumthang Valley, which consists of four smaller valleys, namely Chokhor, Tang, Ura and Chhume. This valley houses many ancient temples, such as Jambay Lhakhang, one of the temples built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, and Kurje Lhakhang temple, where Guru Rinpoche meditated. Apart from just cultural experiences, you can also indulge in several other authentic and immersive experiences, such as cheese tasting at dairy farms and witnessing the traditional Bhutanese weaving techniques. 

Dochula Pass

Located 3000 feet above ground level, the Dochula Pass is a gorgeous and scenic mountain pass that provides breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas and Bhutan’s highest peak, the Gangkhar Puensum. You can visit the Druk Wangyal Chortens and witness the 108 Buddhist monuments, which were built to honour the Bhutanese soldiers who gave their lives during the war. Additionally, make sure that you check out the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang and explore the elaborate murals that showcase Bhutan’s history and monarchy.

Haa Valley

Ha Valley can be the peaceful and tranquil retreat that you seek at the end of your trip. This destination is surrounded by forested mountains, filled with dotted traditional houses, is rich in folklore and holds sacred temples like the Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo.
