Broken Beach

Broken Beach, located near Angel Billabong on Bali's Nusa Penida Island, is a popular tourist destination. One of the most gorgeous and popular attractions on Nusa Penida Island is Broken Beach. There used to be a limestone hill covering the area, but it caved in due to ongoing erosion processes, allowing ocean water to enter. As a result, this area now appears to be a gaping hole in the land that connects to the sea. Its name refers to how the arc resembles the remains of a bridge that has fallen. The beach is also called Pasih Uug in Balinese. We will discuss things to do near the Broken Bridge in this article.

Why visit Broken Beach

Since the beginning of time, the earth has been undergoing geomorphological changes in the form of erosion and deposition. Mother Nature has been gracious enough to allow us to enjoy and explore her erosional and depositional landforms along this journey. The Broken Bridge is one such erosional landform that can be found on the island of Nusa Penida's west coast. You shouldn't miss the breathtaking sight of the ocean waves crashing into and out of the bay. You could also take a stroll on the archway and observe the ocean and the bay from different vantage points.

Best time to visit Broken Beach

As with other tourist destinations in Bali, the best time to visit Broken Bridge is in the summer, from April to October. It can also be visited during the dry days of the rainy season with careful weather planning and analysis. However, more consideration needs to be given to its strong winds and tidal waves. It is advised to visit early in the morning before the crowds build up because this attraction can be enjoyed to its fullest when it is left alone.

Folklore behind Broken Bridge

The appearance of the land is also explained by a local folktale about a boy and his cow. Long ago, locals are thought to have eaten a cow without knowing who the owner was. A young boy who was looking for his missing cow put the villagers to the test by asking them to lift a pole that he had placed on the ground. After the boy established that the villagers had taken his cow, he removed the pole, causing the land to sink in and creating this structure. The local's descendants continue to live in the region so that future generations can hear the tale.  

At Broken Beach

The Broken Beach's view is its primary allure. Some activities that one could do here include watching the ocean waves crash into the bay, strolling around the arch, and viewing the ocean from the cliff's outer edges. Here, unlike other beaches, there is no access to the bay below the cliff, making swimming impossible. If you love playing with drones, then getting the aerial view of this beach shouldn’t be missed.

Another overlooked aspect of this place that visitors frequently skip over is exploring the manta ray viewpoint. The Manta viewpoint is only a short distance from Broken Beach. Between the trials of Angel Billabong and Broken Beach, exactly, is where you'll find the Manta Viewpoint, so it's advised to stop for a short while. One can see the enormous rays that live below the water's surface from the cliff's top. Even so, it's worthwhile to stay a while and watch the ships and manta rays from the top.  

A sizable parking lot, a few small eateries dotted around, and restrooms are just a few of Broken Beach's essential facilities. The eateries around here typically sell cold foods, drinks, and snacks. The presence of basic amenities nearby is also advantageous. In the morning, one could purchase some snacks from this location and sit on the cliff to watch dolphins and rays lurking beneath their feet.

How to Reach Broken Beach

Utilising the speedboat services offered from Sanur in southern Bali is an efficient way to get to Nusa Penida. Reaching Nusa Penida Island usually takes 45 minutes. From there, you can either rent a scooter to explore the island's hidden spots or use one of the many tourist agencies that are available on the island. It takes approximately 40 minutes to reach here from the Toya Pakeh port.

Things to do Near Broken Beach

Angel Billabong

A stunning, naturally occurring infinity pool can be found among the rocks not far from Broken Beach. The waters at this location, known as Angel Billabong, are incredibly clear. The colour of the water and the reflection it creates depend on what time of day you visit. The sun's rays have a major impact on the colour of the water. Since it’s close to Broken Beach, both of them can be covered in a couple of hours.

Kelingking Beach

This undoubtedly ranks among the top attractions on Nusa Penida island's west coast. From Broken Beach to the beach, it would take 20 to 30 minutes to travel about 10 kilometres. The main attractions in this area are the sea view from the hilltop, lounging on the white sands, and descending the wooden stairs. One of its main draws is a view from the top of the cliff that looks like a T-rex. Unlike Broken Beach, the sands can be accessed from the cliff with the help of wooden stairs. Aside from taking pleasure in the pristine beach and the calm atmosphere, one must exercise caution in this area because it is challenging to obtain medication.

Things to remember while visiting Broken Beach

• Do carry your water bottle, mobile and camera to get excellent pictures.
• Avoid standing close to Broken Beach’s edge because you risk injury if you fall on them during the rough wind.
• Do carry cash for transactions at shops near Broken Beach.
