October sees an increase in foreign tourists visiting Japan, but it’s not as busy for Japanese tourists, so many popular destinations aren’t overly crowded. However, it’s still wise to book your accommodation and transport well in advance to secure the best prices and availability.

One exception is in regions where autumn colors arrive earlier, such as Hokkaido, the Tohoku region in northern Honshu, and the higher elevations of the Japan Alps and other mountain areas in Honshu. Japanese tourists love to chase the fall foliage, so these areas can get quite busy in October.
