Looking back in history

The Trafalgar Square was named so to commemorate the victory of the British Royal Navy in the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) and in honour of Admiral Nelson who was martyred in the battle. Inaugurated in 1844, Trafalgar square has etched a significant name for itself in the history of London City over the years. Today, it stands as a symbol of free speech and a cultural plaza for the people.

How to reach

Located in central London in the city of Westminster, Trafalgar square lies close to the banks of the River Thames and is a stone’s throw away from Big Ben and London Eye. Charing across the nearest station (both mainline railways and underground tube station) makes for an effortless commute to reach this important bustling square in London.

Nelson Column

Standing proudly in the middle of the square is the Nelson Memorial Statue and Column. The  56-meter Corinthian column stands tall topped by a 5-meter statue of Admiral Lord Nelson in honour of the great valour exhibited by him in the Battle of Trafalgar. Bronze carvings around the sides of the pedestal of the pillar narrate the battle scenes.

Landseer Lions

Admire the four Landseer Lions that majestically surround the column. Named after its creator Edward Landseer each of the 20 feet long bronze sculptures is very similar in appearance yet all different. Fun fact-These lion sculptures were designed by Sir Edwin Landseer who insisted on using real lion corpses as a model for his creation, which was brought from the London Zoo.

Water Fountains

Relish the alluring Trafalgar square water fountains with intricately sculpted statues of mermaids, mermen, and dolphins. The fountains added in 1845 were remodelled in the 1930s by Edwin Lutyens to include the centrepieces. On a night stroll through the square, one can witness fountains illuminated using LED lights-a spectacular sight to behold.

The 4 Plinths

Discover the world-famous 4 plinths and their statues. Located on the corners of the square, three have permanent status upon them. The North Eastern plinth holds the one with King George IV. While the southeast and southwest beard the statues of  Generals. Interestingly the 4th, in the northwest is an ‘arty’ plinth. As the original intention to hold the statue of William VI could not materialize due to insufficient funds the plinth was commissioned for an art exhibition. Today, it is used to regularly showcase a contemporary art piece, changed every 2 years.

St Martin-in-the-Fields Church

Behold the Magnificent Georgian architecture. St Martin-in-the-Fields Church, valuing historic traditions as well as adapting to changing needs, proves to be an indispensable part for years to come. The Smallest Police Booth

An interesting stop at Trafalgar Square in London’s smallest police station that was erected before WWI, to oversee regular protests. Modelled around a hollowed-out lamp post, today, this little Marvel is nothing more than a broom closet for council cleaners. Yet it still stands as an intriguing attraction to the visitors of Trafalgar square.
