Asterix and Obelix
Source – comic books, movies, TV series
They are endearing characters from the fictional Gaul village of Armorica. Armorica – a village that has remained unconquered by the Roman empire largely because its residents derive super-strength from a magic potion created by the village druid. Asterix is a fearless warrior while, Obelix is a menhir sculptor and deliveryman. The comics narrate their everyday doings and their occasional tussles with the Romans.
Although fictional Armorica can be traced to Brittany in France. Discover the abode of Asterix and Obelix. And, maybe, get your hands on that magic potion, too!
Location : Brittany, France
Lilo and Stitch
Source – movie, TV series
Meet Stitch – a blue koala like alien, the result of an evil scientist’s experiment. And Lilo – an adorable six-year-old who lives with her older sister Nani. Lilo meets Stitch and adopts him as her “dog”. From being a destructive alien, Stitch becomes more loving, and lovable. The adorable pair are seen meeting each day and every obstacle together. A recurring theme is that of ‘Ohana’, which translates to family, that asserts on all your neighbours being family.
And of course the famous quote – “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten,” One of our favourite among the cartoons and destinations they belong to!

Richie Rich
Source – comic books, TV series, movie
Also known as the world’s richest boy, everything in the world of RIchie Rich is a play on money and, you know, having a lot of it. His faithful dog, Dollar, for instance, is of the Dollarmation breed and is covered with dollar signs instead of dots. Known for being altruistic, Richie is surrounded by a gala of eccentric, entertaining characters. Unsurprisingly, our protagonist’s residence is Richville.
Location: Chicago, USA
Cardcaptor Sakura
Sources – anime TV series
The story revolves around the implications of high school student Sakura Kinomoto accidentally setting free a set of magic cards. On discovering she has magical powers, she is tasked with retrieving the cards and, thereby, saving the world from huge peril. It is set in the fictional city of Tomoeda, indicated as being close to Tokyo.
So, you can’t save the world like Sakura did. But, why don’t you save up for a vacation? It is the same thing, we swear.
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Tintin
Source: TV series, movie, comics
A round face with a blond-ish, sleek quiff and, a pale trenchcoat – he can be recognized anywhere in the world. This investigative journalist won our hearts (and his cases) on TV and in writing long before Benedict Cumberpatch (that sounds about right) on Sherlock came along. Constantly accompanied by his loyal and smart dog Snowy, he was always ahead of the police – solving crimes without breaking a sweat.

Heidi, Girl of the Alps
Source: animated TV series
Another gem of Japanese anime is Heidi. It recounts the tale of 5-year-old Heidi and her life. From leaving to live with her intimidating grandfather in the Swiss Alps – whose heart she wins over soon – to leaving to live in Frankfurt where she harbours a deep homesickness for her grandfather’s home in the Alps. And, finally, to returning home and helping her friend Clara become physically able again.

Speedy Gonzales
Source: TV series
If given a chance we’d fully dedicate our learning of the first Spanish word – andre to Speedy Gonzales – the fastest mouse in Mexico. Wielding the words: Ándale! ¡Ándale! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba! ¡Epa! ¡Epa! ¡Epa! Yeehaw! our Spanish protagonist would go on his adventures saving and protecting starving Mexican mice from Sylvester, the “bad puddy tat”, who guards the cheese factory.

Hi Samarpita,
We had fun putting up the blog too! 🙂
Thanks much Samarpita!
Wonderful post and I miss reading something different; anyway my favourite one was Speedy Gonzalez, such a fun cartoon!! Arriba Arriba Arribaaaaaa 😀 😀 thanks for sharing it
Hey David!
Glad you enjoyed the blog! Speedy is our favourite too 🙂
Do keep following us!
We love Speedy too Davide!
Not exactly a cartoon character, but a movie star nevertheless… Hachiko, the famous Japanese Akita dog. A statue of him and his master can be seen at the shibuya station in Tokyo. Great post btw!!!
Wow Anand! That is amazing, thanks for that info. Happy you liked the post!
Thanks Anand!
If we go to Tokyo and Brussels then we’ve been to them all! Brittany, France is definitely a place to check out. Go and check out the Les alignments de Carnac or the Carnac Stones.
Thanks for that, we’ll make note of the tip 🙂
Benedict Cucumberpatch, never heard that one before 🙂 I didn’t know Richie Rich was a cartoon, I only knew it was a live-action movie. I’ve heard so much about Asterix & Obelix but never read any of it. Seems interesting though!
Lauren, you must get a copy of Asterix comics. You won’t regret it!
Asterix would make a fun read Lauren!
This is a fun and different post! I will always love Lilo & Stitch. Sadly that was the only cartoon character I knew from your list 🙁 I was more into Looney Toons as a kid 🙂
Looney Toons was fun indeed Christina!
Happy you enjoyed the post Christina
That is a good list. Of these I have seen the Tintin in Brussels. I am not able to recollect if I saw Heidi in Alps or not. I will watch out for the other cartoon characters.
Absolutely! Let us know if you find more! 😀
I am not a cartoon person but this still excites me. It’s weird how I didn’t saw much of cartoons even in my childhood. But then that’s just me being me, lol. It would be great if they can have some comic characters as well
Thanks for the feedback Abhinav!
Thanks Abhinav
Wow, that brought back a lot of childhood memory. I haven’t seen those cartoons for years. I have to say my favourite was Tintin. I love his adventures.
Happy for the nostalgic moments!
Very Good list 😀 personally I didn’t know Richie rich, but the others of course. In particular Tin Tin and its travel adventures around the world, actually I still watching it even if I’m 30 years old ahahah. I think I’m going to watch cartoons (anime over all) until my death 😀
Like we always say, one can never be too old for cartoons!
That sounds like a wonderful idea. And, yes, Tintin is absolutely evergreen! 😀
It is always fun when even cartoon characters have influences from a specific region. It gives them a lot more to connect to. Especially for us adults when we have been to the countries. 🙂
Never too old for cartoons! 🙂
Absolutely. Would definitely want to relive many of Heidi’s episodes on that beautiful hill. What about you?
so many amazing characters! I always think of imagination of people who create them 😉
Absolutely amazing!
Haha, yes. Don’t we all!
Such a cool post, love it 🙂 I had no idea that Richie Rich was a cartoon, I only knew the movie 🙂 Speedy Gonzales is my favorite!
We love Speedy too!
In that case, do check him out – that catoon’s quite memorable. Speedy Gonzales will be ever imprinted in mine.
I remember when I was only a child watching Heidi on the Tv and wishing to be able to play alongside her in the Swiss Alps. The scenery was so beautiful! A few years ago I visited Brussels for the first time and learned that it is the home of Tintin. I loved the museum dedicated to the cartoon character and also all the murals in the city with him.
The Tintin museum! Wow!
Wonderful to know you visited Tintin’s very abode. Love for you to join us on any future travels! 😀
Haha, what a hilarious idea! I would want to go where the Gummi Bears lived! X
Happy you loved the blog! 🙂
That sure poses an interesting question!
I love it! Brings back childhood memories! I like heidi and sakura! ?
Oh Charmaine, we love them too!
True, aptly put! 😀
Loved this post! We feel this is a great way to set bucket lists and meet more than the surroundings of your favorite characters! Hoping you do a Part- II of this post 😀

Yeah I have always been a great fan of Franco-Belgian comics. American superhero comics never interested me. So, yes, a Eurotrip is a must for me although I’m not sure when I’ll be able to make it.
Hey, we hope you get to Europe soon!
We hope you get to go on one soon!
I’ve been going to France my whole life and Asterix and Obelix is very common here, I always thought Tintin was French too actually! Very interesting thanks 🙂
Interesting isn’t it, Natasha!
We are delighted you loved it 🙂
Yes, part two is an absolute must-do. Keep watching out for us 🙂
