Nyang Nyang Surfing Beach, Uluwatu: A True Surfer's Paradise

With small swells and during high tides when the water pours over the reef, Nyang-Nyang produces short, punchy right-handers that break over coral into a channel. Waves will break in the channel at low tides and higher surges, turning Nyang-Nyang into a tight out. Without any obstructions, swells from the Indian Ocean can have some force and unpredictability when they approach this area. When the tide, swell, and wind all align, which is not often, the wave will emerge from deep water, delivering a rippable wall and the occasional barrel on take-off. Nyang Nyang is one of the must-visit places in Bali for surfers.

It can be difficult to locate, but the only way to get to Nyang-Nyang is to turn off Jalan Raya Uluwatu Pecatu onto a short, signed dirt road and make your way to the brink of the cliff. You can see the wave at the base of the cliff and a bit to the right after parking in the paddock at the end. In return for parking, be sure to patronize the women who run the modest warung.

The 500 steps that wind their way down the sheer rock face to the broad pastures below provide access to Nyang-Nyang, one of the most beautiful beaches to visit in Bali. Take care to avoid any cow paddies as you cross the fields and make your way 100 meters up the coastline to the right. You can use the canal to paddle out. The best choice is to locate a shaded area and set up camp for the morning because it is recommended to only do the ascent once.

On mid to high tides, Nyang-Nyang breaks from waist-high to a bit over-head. During the wet season, it loves early morning light winds or unusual northerlies, as any trade wind would blow it out. This wave is rarely packed because most people prefer the more reliable Uluwatu, and the hike puts them off.

While you may have to carry your own food to Nyang Nyang, there are a few places to eat these days. A tiny beach bar and café, as well as a few warungs providing fresh coconuts and snacks, are located at the western end of the beach. 

The extensive coastline is ideal for those who enjoy exploring the shore. There aren't many people in this area except for seaweed growers tending to their crops and brave and lonesome surfers out on the reef break.
