Pura Luhur Uluwatu

According to inscriptions, Mpu Kuturan, a Majapahit monk who is also credited with the founding of numerous other important temples in Bali, founded Pura Luhur Uluwatu. Dhang Hyang Dwijendra, an eastern Java holy priest, then picked Pura Luhur Uluwatu as the culmination of his spiritual quest. Devotees think he was struck by lightning and vanished after reaching the pinnacle of "spiritual oneness."

According to legend, Dhang Hyang Dwijendra (also known as Danghyang Nirartha) was the designer of the Pura Luhur Uluwatu, along with other temples in Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa. Pura Uluwatu was difficult to access until 1983, and a lightning strike in 1999 set certain parts of the temple on fire. Since then, the temple has undergone a number of repair initiatives.

Balinese Hindus believe that the Hindu Trinity's forces (Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva) converge here. Because of this idea, Pura Luhur Uluwatu has become a place of adoration for Siva Rudra, the Balinese Hindu deity of all elements and aspects of life in the cosmos. Because this is a sacred space and one of the fantastic ancient temples in Bali, religious customs should be respected. Both men and women should wear a sarong, scarf, or sash knotted around their waists inside the temple. Take no photos immediately in front of worshippers, and avoid stepping on or treading on offerings. They are often palm leaves braided into a little box containing flower petals, herbs, money, or food and intended to pacify the spirits.
