7 Mistakes Indians make, while taking a Vacation Abroad

With all the buzz and excitement we would have while planning a vacation abroad, we often overlook quite a few blunders that we make unknowingly, which can be avoided with the right type of planning. Take a look at some of the common mistakes that Indian travellers make, which could help you plan the perfect hindrance-free vacation on your next holiday.

Over Packing

Just remember that you’re travelling, and not moving. So there’s no need for you to pack your entire wardrobe into your suitcase. Arriving at the airport with an overweight suitcase could cost extra money, which you didn’t plan on spending before take off. Checking the weather reports for your destination would help a lot to determine what items you really need to bring with you.

Going crazy over deals

I’d say this is one of the major mistakes done. The unbelievable offers which come at really cheap rates from tour operators always do come with a twist, which is seldom clearly pointed out. We only notice the shortcomings once we embark on the vacation. For example, a friend of mine who went on a vacation to Europe after getting a really cheap rate from a travel agent, had a really hard time on his vacation with the below-par hotels and he also ended up paying entry tickets to various sites he had visited on his holiday. Always make sure you get all the intricate details before you pay for a deal. Better yet, get your vacations completely personalized from start to end, by dropping a postcard here.

Cramming up the vacation too much

When you travel somewhere for fun, your excitement can lead you to try and cram way too much stuff into your itinerary. To keep your trip from being completely exhausting, set aside a couple of days for leisure and relaxation. You want to get the most out of your vacation, but when you cram so much into it, you can barely look back and savour the experience.

Failing to get insurance

Travel insurance has always been a negative and unmentionable word in the travel agent field, for the fear of losing deals with customers. Whether it’s your trip, your possessions, your luggage, or your health, travel insurance and more importantly, the right kind of travel insurance, has become an essential item to pack for smart travellers. And if you don’t buy travel insurance, more than your trip could be ruined.

Reasons to buy travel insurance:
1. Your flight has been cancelled.
2. Your bags are lost.
3. Your passport and wallet are stolen, and you need emergency cash and a replacement passport.
4. You’re involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. You need medical evaluation
5. You need to cancel your trip due to illness.
6. You have a medical emergency in a foreign country.
7. A terrorist incident occurs in the city where you’re planning to visit and you .want to cancel your trip.
8. A national disaster occurs in your place of stay during the vacation.

No copies of documents

While you are away make sure you have copies of all your documentation and keep them separate from the originals. If disaster strikes and you lose your passport it’ll be much easier to resolve if you have a copy as proof.

Exchanging money at the airport

Currency Exchange locations at airports are known to be notorious for charging more than necessary. Check with your local bank to get the money you’ll need abroad before you leave for your vacation. Make sure you exchange enough, because you don’t want to be broke in a foreign land. Better yet, inform your credit card company you will be travelling and use credit; the company will make the exchange rate for you, generally for little to no fee.

Having inflexible dates

When travellers have no flexible dates for their vacation, it can be quite frustrating for them when trying to book flight tickets to find low fares vanish overnight. Ticket prices can fluctuate by thousands of rupees from day to day, and predicting the change can seem virtually impossible, leaving many consumers with inflexible dates to spend a bomb on their vacation for flights alone.
