Florence, the Cradle of Renaissance, is one of the beautiful cities in Italy and the best view of the city is offered by the famous square Piazzale Michelangelo. The steep walk to the top of it is really worth the effort because, in the end, you will have one of the most beautiful views that you have ever seen. The place is known as the terrace of the Florence city for the very reason. Unlike popular opinions, this wasn’t designed by Michelangelo; In fact, it is a pretty modern structure constructed in the year 1869 and it was done by Giuseppe Poggi, a Florence architect.
Tale Of The Terrace
This terrace was made in the 19th century for showcasing the classics of Michelangelo. The monument was dedicated to the legend artist Michelangelo Buonarroti and the replicas of Michelangelo’s work like David, Medici Chapel sculptures from San Lorenzo is displayed. There is a building at the hillside which is used as a coffee bar and a restaurant with panoramic terrace. However, the original purpose of its presence was to be a museum that holds Michelangelo’s work. The square also has the model of the David, the popular statue Michelangelo made. This statue which is made out of bronze is fixed on the large plinth.
A Stroll into the Terrace
The Terrace of the Piazzale Michelangelo provides the best view of the city of Florence both during day and night. It has the best vantage points for photo-shoots. The crowd at the place is at maximum during the sunrise and sunset. Apart from the view, the place also has vendors marketing fake brands of designer shoes, handbags, souvenirs and more at unreasonable prices. You can either choose to ignore them or you can showcase your skills on bargaining. The best bargain would be to start from half the price. La Loggia, a restaurant at the top provides a very fine dining experience at a slightly expensive cost. The restaurant has been there for a long time.
How to reach the Piazzale Michelangelo
By Walk
This fine observation spot which provides amazing views is at the southeastern part of Florence. The place is generally crowded and it attracts couples during all the time of the day as it provides a spectacular ambience. Another reason for them is to have a nice walk up to the Piazzale Michelangelo. If you are intending to walk from the centre, the best way will be to reach Saint Croce Church and cross Ponte Alle Grazie which is near the church. The square can be found to the left after a walk via Del Monte Alle croci from Pazza G Poggi and a climb upstairs. The way up is filled with panoramic views of cypress and olive field. If you need a different experience while returning, you can come via Viale G Poggi with so many bends but it is not fitting at night.
By Taxi, Rentals or Bus
You can also travel by taxi, rental bicycles or by bus to the Poggi Ramps. You can then explore on your own and make your way up to the terrace. Also, You can catch the taxi from the Florence city centre and say the destination, Piazzale Michelangelo. The cost of the ride will be 15 Euro. It is easier for the return as you have taxis readily available at the square.
For the buses, you can board the ATAF city buses #12, #13 from the Centro, or the Santa Maria Novella train station to the Piazzale Michelangelo. It is suggested to buy a round trip ticket and get it stamped. The timetable of the buses can help you with a proper plan on how to reach Piazzale Michelangelo. You can also get the red trams, metro trains, and airport shuttles from the Centro.
