Best Places to Visit in New Zealand
Auckland
Auckland is the starting point for most Indian travellers visiting New Zealand. While attractions like the Sky Tower and Viaduct Harbour remain popular, the city is best experienced as a gateway to nearby islands, coastal drives, and food experiences. A short ferry ride takes travellers to Waiheke Island, known for its boutique wineries, olive groves, and scenic beaches. The city also offers one of the largest selections of Indian restaurants in New Zealand, especially around Sandringham Road, often referred to as New Zealand's Little India, making it an easy and comfortable first stop for Indian visitors.
Rotorua
Rotorua is the geothermal and cultural heart of the North Island, famous for bubbling mud pools, steaming valleys, and Maori heritage experiences. The colourful geothermal landscapes at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland are among the most photographed natural attractions in New Zealand. Rotorua is also one of the best places to experience authentic Maori culture through traditional performances, storytelling sessions and hangi-style meals cooked using geothermal heat. It is one of the few places in the world where culture, cuisine, and geology overlap in such an immediate way.
Queenstown
Set beside Lake Wakatipu and framed by the Remarkables mountain range, Queenstown is widely recognised as the adventure capital of New Zealand. Indian travellers can experience activities such as the Nevis bungee jump, skydiving, jet boating, white-water rafting, and scenic helicopter flights over the Southern Alps. Beyond adventure, Queenstown also has a strong restaurant and wine scene, with Central Otago wines among the finest produced in the Southern Hemisphere.
Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is one of the most scenic destinations in New Zealand, famous for its turquoise glacial waters, snow-capped mountain backdrop, and world-renowned stargazing opportunities. Located within the UNESCO-recognised Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the region attracts travellers looking for clear night skies, astrophotography experiences, and peaceful alpine landscapes. The Church of the Good Shepherd and seasonal lupin blooms make Lake Tekapo especially popular among honeymooners and photographers. For the best stargazing, visit between June and August when winter nights are longest and skies are clearest.
Wanaka
Wanaka offers a quieter and more relaxed alternative to Queenstown. Set along the shores of Lake Wanaka, the town is known for hiking trails, vineyard experiences, scenic drives, and the famous Wanaka Tree, a lone willow growing from the lakebed that has become one of New Zealand's most photographed landmarks. Roys Peak Track offers one of the best panoramic views on the South Island and is best attempted early morning to beat the crowds.
Wellington
Wellington, New Zealand's capital city, combines waterfront charm with a strong arts, cafe, and cultural scene. Te Papa Museum on the waterfront is one of the finest free national museums in the world and covers New Zealand's natural history, Maori heritage, and national story across multiple floors. The Wellington Cable Car, the Cuba Street food district, and the city's independent bookshops and galleries make it a destination worth more than a single overnight stop.
Nelson
Located at the top of the South Island, Nelson is known for its sunshine, coastal scenery, art galleries, and access to Abel Tasman National Park. The region receives more sunshine hours than almost anywhere else in New Zealand, making it a reliable destination even during shoulder season. Golden-sand beaches, kayaking trips through the Abel Tasman coastal track, vineyard tours, and a thriving local arts scene make Nelson a worthwhile addition to any South Island itinerary.
Christchurch
Christchurch is the gateway to New Zealand's South Island and a city that has rebuilt itself into something genuinely interesting after the 2011 earthquake. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens, the Avon River punting experience, the rebuilt street art district, and the historic tram network all reward a day of exploration. For South Island road trips, Christchurch is the natural starting or ending point for routes covering Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Kaikoura, and Queenstown.

Best Things to Do in New Zealand
Experience Maori Culture in Rotorua: Rotorua offers the most immersive introduction to Maori culture in New Zealand. At Te Puia Cultural Village, travellers can explore geothermal valleys, watch traditional carving and weaving demonstrations, enjoy an authentic hāngi meal cooked using geothermal heat, and experience powerful kapa haka performances.
Visit Hobbiton Movie Set: The Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata allows travellers to step directly into the world of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The Hobbiton ticket price is approximately NZD 130 (Rs. 7,396) per adult as of 2026, and advance reservations are strongly recommended since tours regularly sell out.
Cruise Milford Sound: A Milford Sound cruise is one of the defining experiences included in most New Zealand South Island tour packages. Surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls, rainforest and dramatic fjord scenery, the cruise offers some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country. Standard scenic cruises typically start from NZD 149–175 (Rs. 8,388 – 9,852)per adult, while overnight cruises provide a quieter and far more immersive experience inside Fiordland National Park.
Explore the Waitomo Glowworm Caves: The Waitomo Glowworm Caves deliver one of the most unique natural experiences in New Zealand. During the underground boat ride, travellers glide beneath cave ceilings illuminated by thousands of glowworms. This creates the appearance of a living starry sky. The experience usually lasts around an hour and is suitable for travellers across all age groups.
Hike in Fiordland and Mount Cook: New Zealand is home to some of the world’s finest hiking trails. Fiordland and Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park offer some of the most rewarding landscapes for walkers. Popular options include the Routeburn Track, Kepler Track and Hooker Valley Track, each offering glacier views, alpine scenery, suspension bridges and pristine wilderness experiences.
Wine and Food Experiences on Waiheke Island: Located just a short ferry ride from Auckland, Waiheke Island is known for its vineyards, olive groves, coastal scenery and boutique food experiences. The island has built an international reputation for its Bordeaux-style wines and artisan producers, making it a popular addition to any New Zealand tour package.
Explore Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland near Rotorua showcases some of New Zealand’s most colourful geothermal landscapes, including the Champagne Pool, mineral-rich craters, steaming valleys, and the famous Lady Knox Geyser. Entry tickets are generally priced around NZD 37 (Rs. 2,105) per adult.
Adventure Sports in Queenstown: Queenstown is widely recognised as the adventure capital of New Zealand, offering world-famous adrenaline activities. Travellers can experience bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, white-water rafting, heli-skiing and scenic helicopter flights.
Best Time to Visit New Zealand
New Zealand’s seasons are the reverse of India’s, which means December to February is summer, while June to August brings winter across both islands. The best time to visit New Zealand depends on the kind of experience you want.
| Season | Months | Temperature | Highlights | Cons | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak Season (Summer) | December–February | 20–28°C | Long days, all activities open, beach conditions | Higher prices, popular sites get busy | Families, first-time visitors, beach lovers |
| Shoulder Season | March–May & September–November | 10–20°C | Fewer crowds, good deals, autumn foliage | Unpredictable weather, shorter days | Couples, budget travellers, photographers |
| Winter | June–August | 5–15°C (lower in mountains) | Ski season in Queenstown and Wanaka, with dramatic landscapes | Some South Island roads and hikes are inaccessible | Skiers, snow enthusiasts, adventurers |
Note for Indian travellers: December–January coincides with New Zealand's school summer holidays, making it the busiest and most expensive period. Travelling in March–May gives you better value and significantly thinner crowds at sites like Milford Sound and Hobbiton, with minimal trade-off on weather.
New Zealand Visa for Indians (2026 Update)
Indian passport holders cannot apply through the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) system, as it is available only for visa-waiver countries. Travellers from India must apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa through Immigration New Zealand. It is recommended to begin the application process at least 6–8 weeks before your planned travel date.
| Visa Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Visa Type | Visitor Visa |
| Application Method | Online via Immigration New Zealand (immigration.govt.nz) or through a Visa Application Centre |
| Visa Fee | NZD 441 (approximately Rs. 22,000–25,000) |
| IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) | NZD 100 per visitor (approximately Rs. 5,600) — mandatory and paid at the time of visa application; funds conservation and tourism infrastructure |
| Validity | Single or multiple entry, up to 9 months |
| Processing Time | Typically 3 weeks; apply at least 6–8 weeks in advance during peak season |
| Documents Needed | Valid passport (6+ months validity), bank statements, return tickets, proof of accommodation, and travel insurance |
NOTE: The IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) of NZD 100 (Rs. 5,689) is a separate charge on top of the visa fee. It is mandatory for most Indian tourists on a New Zealand Visitor Visa.
New Zealand Food Guide for Indian Travellers
New Zealand’s food scene is shaped by fresh local produce, seafood, lamb dishes, artisan dairy products, vineyard culture, and international influences. While the country is known for meat-heavy cuisine, Indian travellers, including vegetarians, can still find excellent dining options across major tourist destinations.
Auckland
- Must-Try in Auckland: Fresh seafood, fish and chips, New Zealand-style brunches, artisan coffee, pavlova, and vineyard dining experiences on Waiheke Island.
- Recommended Cafes & Restaurants: Auckland offers the widest range of Indian restaurants in New Zealand, especially around Sandringham Road, often referred to as New Zealand’s “Little India.” Travellers can also explore waterfront dining around Viaduct Harbour and multicultural food markets across the city.
Queenstown
- Must-Try in Queenstown: Fergburger-style gourmet burgers, woodfired pizzas, Central Otago wines, lakeside dining experiences, and local desserts.
- Recommended Cafes & Restaurants: Queenstown has several vegetarian-friendly cafes and Indian restaurants catering to international travellers. Many lakeside restaurants also offer vegan and gluten-free menu options alongside local New Zealand cuisine.
Rotorua
- Must-Try in Rotorua: Traditional Māori hangi meals, lamb dishes, geothermal cooking experiences and local farm-to-table cuisine.
- Recommended Cafes & Restaurants: Rotorua combines cultural dining experiences with casual cafés and vegetarian-friendly restaurants. Maori cultural villages often include traditional dinners as part of evening performances.
Christchurch
- Must-Try in Christchurch: Canterbury lamb, artisan bakery items, brunch cafés, fresh produce markets, and local South Island wines.
- Recommended Cafes & Restaurants: Christchurch has a growing café culture with multiple vegetarian, vegan, and Indian dining options across the city centre and suburban neighbourhoods.
Wellington
- Must-Try in Wellington: Craft coffee, gourmet burgers, seafood, craft beer, and creative café-style dining.
- Recommended Cafes & Restaurants: Wellington is widely considered New Zealand’s café capital and offers one of the country’s strongest food scenes, including vegetarian restaurants, vegan bakeries, and modern fusion dining.
Vegetarian & Jain Food Options in New Zealand
Indian vegetarian travellers should know that New Zealand’s food culture is strongly centred around meat and seafood. However, vegetarian and vegan options have expanded significantly across Auckland, Queenstown, Christchurch, and Wellington.
Major supermarket chains like Countdown/Woolworths and Pak’nSave stock Indian ready-to-eat meals, lentils, spice mixes, fresh vegetables, and vegetarian essentials useful for self-drive holidays. Queenstown, Rotorua, Christchurch and Wellington all offer vegetarian-friendly cafes and restaurants, though Jain food options may require advance requests.
North Island vs South Island — Which One Suits You?
One of the biggest decisions while planning New Zealand tour packages is choosing between the North Island and the South Island. While both islands offer spectacular landscapes and very different travel experiences, the right choice depends on your travel style, interests and available trip duration.
| Feature | North Island | South Island |
|---|---|---|
| Known For | Maori culture, geothermal attractions, Hobbiton, beaches, and wine regions | Fjords, glaciers, adventure sports, and alpine scenery |
| Key Destinations | Auckland, Rotorua, Waitomo, Wellington, Taupo | Queenstown, Christchurch, Milford Sound, Franz Josef, Aoraki |
| Best For | Cultural travellers, families, first-time visitors | Adventure seekers, honeymoon couples, and nature lovers |
| Pace | More compact, easier to cover in 5–6 days | Requires more time; 6–8 days minimum to do it justice |
| Recommended Duration | 5–6 nights | 6–8 nights |
New Zealand Trip Cost from India (2026 Estimates)
| Travel Style | Duration | Price Per Person (Land Only) | With Flights (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | 10 Days | Rs. 75,000 – 1,00,000 | Rs. 1,40,000 – 1,80,000 |
| Mid-Range | 10–12 Days | Rs. 1,00,000 – 1,60,000 | Rs. 1,80,000 – 2,60,000 |
| Premium | 10–14 Days | Rs. 1,60,000 – 2,50,000 | Rs. 2,50,000 – 3,60,000 |
| Luxury | 12–14 Days | Rs. 2,50,000+ | Rs. 4,00,000+ |
Note: Costs below are approximate estimates and can vary based on travel season, booking lead time, and hotel category.
What Affects Your New Zealand Trip Budget?
- Departure city: Flights from Mumbai and Bangalore via Singapore Airlines or Malaysia Airlines are typically better priced than from smaller metros. Booking 3–4 months ahead can save Rs. 20,000–30,000 per person on flights alone.
- Travel season: December–February is peak season in New Zealand (summer). March–May and September–November offer 15–25% savings on accommodation and tours with only minor trade-offs on weather.
- Island coverage: A North Island-only itinerary will cost less than a two-island package meaningfully because you skip the domestic flight and the South Island's premium adventure activities and luxury lodges.
- Activities: New Zealand's premium experiences come at a premium price. The Hobbiton ticket price (NZD 130/adult), Milford Sound cruise cost (NZD 149–389 depending on cruise type), Franz Josef helicopter tours (NZD 280–430), and Queenstown's adventure sports add up quickly. Prioritising 3–4 key experiences and spreading the rest across free hikes and self-guided drives is a smart strategy.
Practical Tips for Indian Travellers in New Zealand
- Money: The NZD to INR conversion currently sits at approx. Rs. 56.79. Carry a forex card, international debit/credit cards and some cash for rural areas and smaller operators. ATMs are widely available in cities but become sparse in Fiordland and the West Coast.
- Food: Auckland has a strong Indian restaurant scene with options ranging from South Indian dosas to Punjabi dhabas. Vegetarian food is available across most cities, but always check ingredients, as some dishes use fish sauce or meat stock.
- Getting Around: New Zealand is a self-drive country, especially on the South Island. Renting a car gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints, explore off-the-beaten-path beaches, and adjust timings around the weather. A campervan is a popular option for budget-conscious travellers on longer trips.
- Connectivity: Local SIM cards from Spark, Vodafone NZ, or 2degrees are available at Auckland Airport.
- Weather and Packing: New Zealand weather changes faster than almost anywhere else in the world. Pack layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes even in summer.
New Zealand Festival and Events Calendar
| Event | Month | Location | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year's Eve | December 31 | Auckland, Queenstown | Sky Tower fireworks, lake parties |
| Waitangi Day | February 6 | Bay of Islands (Waitangi) | National day, Māori ceremonies, cultural events |
| Lantern Festival | February–March | Auckland | Chinese New Year celebrations at Albert Park |
| World of Wearable Art (WOW) | September | Wellington | World-famous fashion and art spectacle |
| Queenstown Winter Festival | June–July | Queenstown | Snow, live music, street theatre, extreme sports |
| Matariki (Māori New Year) | June–July | Nationwide | Public holiday since 2022; dawn ceremonies, lantern events, Māori arts |
NOTE: Matariki is particularly special for Indian travellers interested in indigenous culture.
Common Mistakes Indians Make While Planning a New Zealand Trip
- Underestimating distances: New Zealand looks compact on a map, but the roads are winding and scenic, which is wonderful but slow. Auckland to Queenstown by road takes over 12 hours. Build inter-city travel time realistically into your itinerary.
- Skipping the visa lead time: The Visitor Visa for Indians takes 4–8 weeks to process. Applying too close to departure is the single biggest cause of trip cancellations from India. Apply at least 8 weeks ahead, especially during peak season (November–January).
- Forgetting the IVL: The IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) of NZD 100 catches many travellers off guard. It is charged on top of the visa fee. Factor it into your budget from the start.
- Over-scheduling the South Island: Fiordland's distances, the Milford Sound drive (no passing traffic; the road closes in extreme weather), and the pace of the West Coast require more buffer time than most Indian travellers plan for.
- Assuming Indian restaurant options everywhere: Auckland has excellent Indian food. Beyond Rotorua, Queenstown, and Christchurch, options thin out significantly. Pack energy bars, instant oats, and ready-to-eat Indian snacks for the West Coast and rural stretches.
- Booking Hobbiton on the day: The Hobbiton Movie Set sells out every single day during peak season. Book the Hobbiton ticket weeks, sometimes months in advance, especially if you want the Evening Banquet tour.

I had planned my New Zealand vacation via Pickyourtrail in May 2023. Starting from guiding me with the tour dates keeping visa issuance time period in mind, to helping me secure Visa with prompt followups with the Embassy, the Pre-Trip support was amazing. While on the trip, their 24*7 customer support was very prompt with timely trip & Activity intimations to resolving issues then and there. There was a small mistake with the cab planning where the cab drop was arranged for Queenstown while it was supposed to be Christchurch. The support team was very timely in coordinating and getting it changed with the Rental Service Provider else we would have gotten stuck as it was almost closing time. Now coming to the post Trip, Pickyourtrail ensured to follow up with me and get the refunds done with a few days despite waiting for my request. On the whole it was a crazy ride for me in New Zealand and all thanks to Pickyourtrail and it's team for making my first international vacation memorable.

We went on a long holiday to Australia and New Zealand with Pickyourtrail. Managing the trip, giving everyday updates, and 24*7 support was amazing! Their app was really informative too. We didn't have to open google or ask anyone around for help since Pickyourtrail got it all covered.

Planned my first trip with PYT to New Zealand. Splendid experience with the destination and PYT team. Took a self drive trip and no major hiccups. What I liked about PYT was the experience before the trip started. In terms of planning, VISA, logistics, they were more then accommodating with my requests. The communication with their support staff on the app is seamless too, they help you with a ton of things to do and on spot booking as well. All in all, will definitely recommend them!

We planned a family trip to New Zealand in May 25 with Pickyourtrail and had a memorable experience. The planning of the tickets, places, activities and visas and Especially hotels selection was good. Had support from 247 team in case of any need while traveling. The Pickyourtrail app is also very user friendly and captures all docs and vouchers in one place. Very happy. Special thanks to Rashmi, Amit, Prem and Sandhiya. Shilpa

This is my honest review of my experience with PickYourTrail whose services my partner and I used to book our memorable New Zealand honeymoon. Right from helping us with understanding our personalities, our trip goals, our budgets, and timelines and building an itinerary based on all these inputs, Sivarohit was extremely helpful and proactive. Vijay from their Visa assistance team was prompt and ensured we got our visas perfectly in order and in time. Special shoutout to their support team: Chandramouli, Shreyah, Anith, Selina, Gaurav, Taniya, and Naveen who were available round the clock to help us with any queries (no matter how big or small) as well as regularly checking-in with us via the in-app chat to ensure we were doing okay. There were a few minor glitches (but overall, that's hardly a concern in the larger scheme of things). Right from the flights, to the choice of hotels, activities picked from the best quality providers, as well as the great self-drive rental cars that we got, the team did so much of the heavy-lifting for us so that we made the most out of our vacation. Can't wait for our next vacation with PYT!

I have used Pickyourtrail for my road trip in New Zealand for my parent’s trip to Maldives. The platform is easy to use and they had great on trip support for our New Zealand guiding us on timings and things not to miss. For Maldives the prices were quite competitive for good resorts.

Amazing team at Pickyourtrail. Our trip to New Zealand was extremely seamless, with the team always approachable through the app whenever needed. And they prioritise customer experience over any other thing. Hope you guys continue the same level of customer service and I’m sure most of our trips will be through you. Cheers.
