Places to Visit in Australia from Chennai
Sydney
Sydney is where most Chennai travellers begin their Australia journey. It is a city that rewards proper time investment rather than a rushed 2-night stop. With well-curated Sydney tour packages from Chennai, you can explore the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, the Victorian terrace streets of Paddington, the coffee shops and galleries of Newtown at ease. A Blue Mountains day trip from Sydney is one of Australia's best single-day experiences: ancient sandstone canyons, Jurassic rainforest, and panoramic views over a 1.03 million-hectare national park. Plan 3–4 nights minimum to do Sydney properly.
Melbourne
Melbourne is the city that most Chennai travellers underestimate when first planning, and wish they had given more time to after visiting. Unlike Sydney, Melbourne does not have a single iconic landmark. It has the world's largest tram network threading through Victorian-era streetscapes, hidden laneway bars and restaurants behind unmarked doors. Melbourne tour packages typically feature some of Australia's best day trips. The Great Ocean Road offers breathtaking coastal scenery, while the Phillip Island Penguin Parade gives visitors the chance to watch hundreds of penguins return to shore at sunset. Plan 3 nights and do not skip both day trips.
Gold Coast
For Chennai travellers planning an Australia holiday with children or teenagers, the Gold Coast is often the most entertaining destination on the itinerary. Known for its world-famous theme parks, beautiful beaches, and relaxed coastal atmosphere, it offers a completely different experience from Sydney and Melbourne. With Gold Coast packages from Chennai, you can enjoy attractions such as Dreamworld, Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, and Wet'n'Wild without any hassle. The nearby Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is also a favourite among families who want to interact with koalas and kangaroos.
Cairns & the Great Barrier Reef
If seeing the Great Barrier Reef is a priority, Cairns deserves a place in your Australia itinerary. Most travellers reach Cairns via Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane, making it an easy addition to a longer East Coast trip. From reef cruises and snorkelling adventures to rainforest excursions in the Daintree, Cairns showcases Australia's tropical side. Chennai travellers typically spend 3 to 4 nights here to experience both the reef and rainforest without rushing between activities. Avoid November–March due to the tropical wet season and marine stingers.
Uluru (Ayers Rock)
Travellers from Chennai looking to explore beyond Australia's famous coastal cities should consider adding Uluru to their itinerary. Sits in the red desert of Australia's Northern Territory, 1,500 km from the nearest major city. It is a 348-metre-high sandstone monolith that has been sacred to the Anangu Aboriginal people for at least 10,000 years. Nothing prepares you for its scale at sunrise or sunset, when the rock shifts through shades of orange, red, and purple as the light changes. It is not a convenient addition to the East Coast circuit. It is best suited for travellers planning 12 days or more in the country. Combine with nearby Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) for the full landscape experience.
Whitsundays
The Whitsundays are 74 islands in the Coral Sea, accessible by boat or seaplane from Airlie Beach (accessible from Brisbane or Proserpine Airport). Whitehaven Beach, with its 7 km of 98% pure silica sand, is consistently ranked among the world's top beaches. The Whitsundays are the centrepiece of most Australian honeymoon packages that offer a combination of turquoise water, empty beaches, and sailing between islands, delivering an experience closer to a Maldives private island than a conventional Australian city break. Access requires planning: fly to Proserpine or Hamilton Island, then transfer by boat or water taxi.
Sydney vs Melbourne vs Gold Coast: Which Is Right for You?
Most travellers from Chennai include two or three destinations in their Australia itinerary. Each city offers a completely different experience, from iconic landmarks and cultural attractions to beaches, wildlife, and tropical landscapes. Understanding what each destination is known for can help you decide where to spend your time and build an itinerary that matches your travel style.

May and June are among the best months to visit Australia from Chennai. They coincide with school holidays in India and offer excellent weather across Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and Uluru.

Food in Australia: What Chennai Travellers Should Know
Many Chennai travellers are surprised by just how diverse Australia's food scene is. Cities like Sydney and Melbourne are home to vibrant multicultural communities, which means you'll find everything from authentic Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine to modern Australian dining. While Australia doesn't have a street-food culture like Bangkok or Singapore, it offers an excellent range of cafés, bakeries, seafood restaurants, and international dining experiences.
Must-Try Australian Foods
- Tim Tam: Australia's most famous chocolate biscuit, and a popular souvenir to bring home.
- Barramundi: A native Australian fish known for its mild flavour and flaky texture. It's especially popular in coastal destinations such as Cairns.
- Lamingtons: A classic Australian dessert made from sponge cake coated in chocolate and coconut.
- Meat Pie: One of Australia's favourite comfort foods, commonly found in bakeries across the country.
- Flat White: Australia's signature coffee drink and a must-try for coffee lovers, particularly in Melbourne's café culture.
- Fresh Oysters Sydney and other coastal cities are known for fresh seafood, including high-quality oysters served straight from the ocean.
- Avocado Toast: A café favourite that has become synonymous with Melbourne's brunch scene.
Indian and Vegetarian Food in Australia
One of the biggest advantages for travellers from Chennai is that Indian food is widely available throughout Australia. Major cities have well-established Indian communities, making it easy to find familiar meals when needed.
- Best cities for Indian food: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.
- Popular cuisines available: South Indian, North Indian, Indo-Chinese, vegetarian, and Jain-friendly options.
- Vegetarian travellers will find plenty of choices beyond Indian restaurants, including pasta, pizzas, salads, vegetarian burgers, plant-based dishes, and café favourites such as avocado toast.
- Jain travellers should inform restaurants in advance, as onion- and garlic-free meals are not commonly available outside Indian restaurants.
While Indian food is easy to find, don't miss the opportunity to explore Australia's multicultural dining scene. From Vietnamese and Korean restaurants in Melbourne to Lebanese and Japanese eateries in Sydney, some of the country's best culinary experiences come from its diverse communities.

Australia Shopping Guide for Chennai Travellers
For travellers from Chennai, Australia is not typically a destination for bargain electronics or cheap international brands. However, it is an excellent place to shop for locally made products, premium skincare, quality wool clothing, gourmet food items, and authentic souvenirs that are difficult to find in India.
Best Places to Shop in Australia
- Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne: One of the country's most famous markets, known for fresh produce, local delicacies, handmade crafts, and Australian food products.
- The Rocks Markets, Sydney: A great place to pick up handmade jewellery, locally crafted gifts, Aboriginal-inspired artwork, and artisan food products.
- Harbour Town Premium Outlets, Gold Coast: Popular among visitors looking for discounts on sportswear, outdoor gear, children's clothing, and international brands.
- Pitt Street Mall, Sydney: Home to major international fashion brands, department stores, beauty products, and flagship retail outlets.
What to Buy in Australia
- Macadamia nuts and chocolates: Fresh Queensland-grown products that are often better value than imported versions available in India.
- Merino wool products: Scarves, sweaters, socks, and winter accessories made from Australia's world-famous wool.
- Australian skincare brands: Products from brands such as Aesop, Jurlique, and Grown Alchemist are often more affordable than in India.
- Aboriginal art and handmade souvenirs: Unique keepsakes that reflect Australia's Indigenous heritage and culture.
- UGG boots and sheepskin products: Authentic Australian-made footwear and accessories.
- Manuka honey and gourmet food products: Popular gifts known for their quality and health benefits.
For most Chennai travellers, the best shopping purchases are practical items that are uniquely Australian rather than globally available brands.

Australia tour packages from Chennai offer one of the most rewarding long-haul trips available for Tamil Nadu travellers. It is where you’ll find most English-speaking people, serves South Indian food within 2 km of the city centre, and whose best travel season aligns with Chennai's school holidays.
Your holiday should be about watching penguins return from the ocean at sunset on Phillip Island, snorkelling above coral that has been building for 20,000 years, and deciding which Melbourne laneway cafe makes the best flat white. Not coordinating four internal flights, comparing hotel locations across three cities, and keeping track of visa processing timelines. Leave the planning to us.

Pickyourtrail was the best thing that happened to us this year.. it was such a pleasure to have them coordinate our tour to Australia..Being frequent travellers, myself and my family had a hussle free vacation.. Even though it was a last minute plan from our end, they made sure everything was ready for us, from beginning till the last day of our tour. Their team did a splendid job indeed.. We loved Srishty a lot.. She made sure we were on board with them from the 1st call, and coordinated throughout.. She was very easy to approach and responded so promptly always.. Srishty is an asset to your team.. Special thanks to Chandramouli and Gaurav who supported us throughout. When we were in Australia, they followed up so closely, we didnt have to fret even once..As for the trip, it was beautifully customised and we were able to enjoy everything.. We loved the leisure time we got, due to their well organised tour plan.. Thanks for the ideal vacation..Looking forward for more such vacations guys..

Had a super awesome trip to Australia, all planned and booked through Pickyourtrail. The 11 days was an unforgettable experience for us, made possible by the great peeps at PYT. The visa process and overall booking experience was hassle free and super easy. Would recommend PYT to anyone wishing to have a great experience. Suggestion for improvement: The app suggested some good tips like the different plug point in Australia that helped us prepare for it. Wouldve been great if the app suggested a low exchange rate credit card for use internationally.

The best friends trip to Australia was amazing. We are very happy with your service - right from the choice of destination, planning day wise itinerary, booking hotels and tours, visa application and also the prompt response from your team 24*7 during the trip. The airlines chosen was one of the best. The hotel stay at Sheraton Melbourne and Ibis Sydney were a great experience. All the tour guides / operators provided for day tours were knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. All the pickups and drops to and fro from the airport were dot on time. Overall an awesome experience with PYT. Special mention of Aadhil, Manoj and Rinchen who have made this happen for us. Keep up the good work and we hope to book more memories through you in the future.

Had a 10 day trip to Australia. 1. During the entire trip, the support (particularly Gaurav from Customer Experience) was always just a ping away. They resolved every query within a few minutes and I never felt left out or stranded during the entire trip. 2. All my questions before the trip was answered and the team was proactively calling me up to know if i have any questions about the activities or the plan in general. 3. The hotels booked were in perfect locations and had access to public transport and food. Everything was at walkable distance and made my spontaneous planning a breeze. 4. The Cairns river tubing provider was AWESOME and gave us a real good experience. Overall, pickyourtrail is my pick for any trip :)

Had a wonderful holiday in Australia (Perth and Adelaide) thanks to the customised meticulous arrangements by pickyourtrail team right from travel in Australia, air tickets, activity suggestions and arrangements and hotel booking. Balabharathi was always in touch throughout the 9 day period making sure all minor issues were sorted out and sending reminders of the next day's shchedule. Even when one activity was cancelled due to unforseen circumstances, the team quickly acted on my suggestion and made sure the activity took place. The high level of committment and professionalism by Balabharathi and the pyt team is indeed commendable. Recommend them for all holidays, domestic and international.

Feedback for Pickyourtrail (8/10): Pros: The service was truly impeccableby far the best I have experienced in the travel industry. The speed of response from Chandana was phenomenal, and I was genuinely impressed with how efficiently everything was managed. The tailor-made itinerary from Evans was perfectly suited to our needs. A standout feature was the 24*7 supportyou could text them anytime during the trip with any doubt, and they were always quick to respond. Cons: The hotel in Melbourne, while having a good room, lacked housekeeping, which was a bit of a drawback. Additionally, more guidance on the nightlife in Australia would have been helpful, especially noting that most places close around 5-6 PM. Some insights into the actual city vibes would have enhanced the experience. Another issue was with the Boxing Day Test match. We were promised Day 1 tickets, but they got sold out, and we had to settle for Day 2 tickets instead, which was a bit of compromise. Overall, a great trip organized with top-notch service, and I look forward to planning future vacations with Pickyourtrail!
