Trunyan is another ancient village, and it has become one of the top tourist attractions in Bali for its strange yet terrifying funeral custom. When you visit this area, you'll see real skulls and human remains on the streets, similar to Skull Island in King Kong. These bodies lie left on the ground, with no funeral or cremation, as is customary in Balinese Hindu culture. If your first idea is to escape from the village and never return, this type of "tourist attraction" might not be for you. Yet, if you're looking for a unique and odd adventure on your Bali trip, then pay a visit to Trunyan Village. If you have Kintami in your Bali tour package from India, you can easily reach this place.
The enchanting tale of Trunyan Village unfolds centuries ago on the island of Java in Indonesia. At that time, the King of Solo in Surakarta, present-day Java, had four offspring – a princess and three princes. One day, the princess and the eldest prince caught wind of an extraordinarily delightful scent. Captivated by its allure, they decided to trace its origin, leading them to the island of Bali.
Ultimately, only the eldest prince reached the source of the captivating fragrance, discovering a tree at the heart of a village near the renowned Lake Batur in Bali. This village is now known as Trunyan.
Cremations or burials are the most common ways for most Balinese Hindus to honor the deceased. Nonetheless, the funeral customs in Trunyan Village are, to say the least, unique. Rather than burying or cremating their loved ones, the people of Trunyan Trunyan Village, Kintamani, Bali place their loved ones' bodies on the ground, cover them with fabric, and arrange bamboo around them to form a prism known as "ancak sanji" and this custom is called “Mepasah.”
During Mepasah, the bodies are cleansed with rainwater and then placed on the ground, draped in white fabric in order to preserve the face. Despite the fact that the bodies remain above ground, they do not smell. The remains are interred in the Taru Menyan tree, which translates as "fragrant tree." The scent from the tree, presumably, neutralizes any “unwanted odors.”
