Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, conceived the idea of The World Islands in Dubai. The construction of the islands was taken care of by Van Oord and Boskalis, the same company that has constructed the Palm Jumeirah, developed by Nakheel Projects – city’s premier development company. The World Island in Dubai reinvents the earth and offers the ultimate in terms of privacy and exclusivity. Due to financial issues, the construction of the group of 300 islands which began in the year 2003 had to be put on hold in the year 2008. There are only around 2 to 3 of the Dubai world islands that are completely functional, as of today.

At present, it is open to commercial use, and there has been news that due to the improper foundation, the islands may be sinking back into the water. The World Islands in Dubai cost over $14 billion to build as it required 321 million cubic meters of sand—about the volume of 150 Major League Baseball stadiums. The World Islands together covers over 20 square miles of the Persian Gulf, with one island for every country (excluding Israel).
