Fish lovers get to see the butterflyfish, angelfish, soldierfish, sweepers and squirrelfish. Some famous invertebrates in the inner islands are the nudibranch and the Spanish dancer. The inner islands also serve as nesting grounds for Hawkbill turtle. You may see one if you get lucky.

There are many islands in Seychelles and unlike the inner Islands, the outer islands are secluded and you get to see varied species of marine life here. The outer islands are nesting grounds for green turtles all around the year. You also get to see Manta Rays passing by occasionally. If you are lucky enough you might also see a variety of sharks such as Hammerhead, Silvertip Sharks, Nurse Sharks and Grey Reef Sharks. 

Best Time to Snorkel

Anytime is fine, when it comes to Snorkelling in Seychelles. However, April – May and October – November are the ideals months for snorkelling, when is sea is calm and clear. The south-est monsoon makes the sea rough and sometimes not suited for any water sport, it may also reduce the water visibility and increase the seaweed. 

Best spots for snorkelling in Seychelles

There are dozens of good snorkelling areas in Seychelles. Some of them are

1. La Digue
2. Coco Island from Cote d’Or on Praslin Island
3. Anse Royale and Port Launay Marine Park on Mahe
4. Bel Ombre
5. Anse Diri
6. Anse Major
7. Baie Ternay Marine Reserve
8. St Pierre in Curieuse Marine Park

The La Digue and Praslin have excellent glass-bottom boats and will take you above the corals. The Bel Ombre, Anse Diri and Anse Major are very nice spots for Snorkelling, but they require at least 2.5 km walk through the Morne Seychellois National Park.

While snorkelling, always have these four simple things in your mind

1. Minimize the duration of your stay in the water
2. Cover up to prevent sunburn/sunstroke.
3. Always obey any warning signs on display.
4. Reserve Nature, this means the marine life must absolutely be respected and left in their habitat, therefore do not collect souvenirs or pets.
