Dedicated to the Lord of creation, Lord Brahma, this is a unique mandir in Pushkar for any tourist. This is rare because there are not many shrines of Lord Brahma. Named as Jagatpita Brahma Mandir, this is the main attraction in the city of Pushkar. Dating back to the 14th century, the myth says that the origin of the temple is 2000 years before.   • Folklores say that the location of this Brahma Mandir in Pushkar was chosen by the Lord Brahma himself. Built by Vishvamithra, this is praised as a highly religious attraction.
  • Most of the sacred Hindu temples did not survive the Wrath of time. It was all destroyed by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb. It is a great surprise as to how this Temple survived.

History

Myth

As per the Padma Purana of the Hindu scriptures, Lord Brahma saw a demon named Vajranabha. He was killing and torturing human life. So Brahma slew this demon with his special weapon, the Lotus. While doing so, three petals fell down from the lotus resulting in the 3 sacred lakes now. they are the Madhya Pushkar, the Jyestha Pushkar and Kanishta Pushkar.

While his visit to the earth for a yajna at the Jayestha Pushkar, his wife Savitri was not available. So with the help of Lord Indra, Gayatri, Gujar’s daughter sat as his wife. With Savitri arriving and seeing this, she cursed Brahma that he will never be worshipped. Later his worship was only in Pushkar as per the orders of Savitri. This is why this mandir in Pushkar is the most prominent worship place of Brahma.

Architecture

Sporting a southern style of architecture, This temple is a gigantic marble structure. Built on a high platform, the marble stairs lets you reach the entrance of the temple. From the entrance is the pillared hall which is the Mandapa and from there is the Sanctum (Garbagriha). At the Garbagriha is the idol of the Lord Brahma. The temple also has the images of Vishnu, Garuda and Dwarapalaka (gatekeepers). The structure with the red coloured spire and the symbol of Swan adds beauty to the exterior building. Known for it even more brilliant architecture, it is certainly worth a visit while you visit Pushkar.

How to Reach Pushkar

Located 14 km away from the city of Ajmer, Pushkar is a city that is very easily accessible. You can take a flight to the nearest airport, which is Jaipur. This airport connects major cities so you will not have to worry about it. With more than 140 km away from Jaipur, the rest distance to Pushkar can be covered by either a Bus or a taxi. Otherwise, the train will be an easier option. You can get down at the Ajmer railway station as Pushkar does not have one. From there it is just a 15 km journey for you to reach the city of Pushkar.

Best time to Visit

To witness and experience the best at the Brahma temple at Pushkar, You will want to visit the temple during October and November. This is the period when the most auspicious Kartik Poornima happens (Full moon during the month of Kartik from the Hindu calenders). Marking the start of the world-renowned Pushkar Camel Fair, Kartik Poornima becomes even more special.

Temple timings:
Winter – 6:30 AM – 8:30 PM
Summer – 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Sandhya Aarti (40 minutes after sunset)
Ratri Shayan Aarti (5 hours after sunset)
Mangala Aarti (2 hours before sunrise)
