My Son Hindu Sanctuary in Hoi An – Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site

Between the 4th and 13th centuries, a unique culture developed on the coast of contemporary Vietnam. My Son Hindu Sanctuary in Hoi An is the best example of the ancient Champa civilization. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My Son Sanctuary comprises of remains of a series of impressive tower-temples. This site was believed to be the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence. My Son Hindu Sanctuary Complex was also a political centre and a royal burial ground. In this complex, you can spot more than 70 structures of Hindu Gods and Goddess. The highlight of this sanctuary is the Shiva statue.

The impressive ruins of the temple complex feature many beautiful stone sculptures, temples and towers in tropical jungle surroundings. The architectural designs of the temple complex are unique. It symbolizes the greatness and purity of Mount Meru. Mount Meru is the mythical sacred mountain that is home of Hindu gods, located at the centre of the universe. Their skilful use of red bricks and sandstone is remarkable.

Historical Significance of My Son Hindu Sanctuary

When you are here you will realise that is monument is very unique and cannot be compared with any other monument in Southeast Asia. It also stands as proof of the wonderful engineering skills of the Champa Kingdom. It also gives an insight into the content and evolution of the Champa’s political and religious ideas.

Developed over a period of ten centuries, My Son Hindu Sanctuary gives a vivid picture of spiritual and political life in an important phase of history. The location gives the temple its strategic significance. This temple complex is located in the mountainous border of Duy Xuyen District in Quang Nam Province.

Like any other historical site around the world, My Son Hindu Sanctuary was also destroyed by time and wars. It was also neglected for long years. Then the French rediscovered and renovated it in 1898. Unfortunately, it suffered great damage in the most recent war. It was bombarded by the Americans since the Viet Cong used it as a hiding place. The Viet Cong thought that the enemy would not touch a holy site and used it as a hiding place. 

The central complex of My Son Hindu Sanctuary managed to survive the bombs. Some parts of the ruins have now been rebuilt and are open to the public. My Son Hindu Sanctuary is a must-visit for those who appreciate history.
