Getting Around Singapore – MRT, Grab, Cable Car & Airport Transfers

Singapore has a highly efficient public transportation system that connects major tourist areas across the island.

  • MRT (Mass Rapid Transit): The MRT is the primary mode of public transport in Singapore and connects key districts such as Marina Bay, Orchard, Chinatown and Sentosa Gateway. Visitors can purchase a Singapore Tourist Pass, which offers unlimited travel for 1–3 days.
  • Ride-hailing services (Grab): Ride-hailing services such as Grab are widely available in Singapore and offer a convenient way to travel across the city. These services are especially useful for airport transfers, late-night travel, or when travelling in groups with luggage.
  • Sentosa Island transport: Sentosa Island is well-connected to mainland Singapore through multiple transport options, making it easy to access its beaches, theme parks, and attractions. Sentosa is accessible via the Sentosa Express monorail from VivoCity, cable car services from Mount Faber, and road access by private vehicle or taxi. The monorail connects directly to key attractions on the island.
  • Airport connectivity: Changi Airport is directly connected to the city via the MRT network, making transfers smooth and efficient for travellers. The MRT journey from Changi Airport to central Singapore typically takes 30–40 minutes.

Best Places to Visit in Singapore for Tourists

  • Marina Bay: Marina Bay is Singapore’s most iconic and photographed district, known for its futuristic skyline and stunning waterfront attractions. Many travellers opt for a dedicated Sentosa Island package to explore it fully.

Where to Stay in Singapore – Best Areas & Hotels for Tourists?

Singapore offers a range of accommodation areas suited to different travel styles, from luxury waterfront stays to budget-friendly neighbourhoods with easy transport access.

Marina Bay / Downtown Core: This is the central area for sightseeing, with proximity to attractions such as Gardens by the Bay, the ArtScience Museum, and Clarke Quay. It offers a mix of mid-range and luxury hotels, including high-end waterfront properties. Hotel prices are generally higher due to the central location and skyline views.

Orchard Road: Known as Singapore’s main shopping district, Orchard Road offers a wide selection of hotels ranging from mid-range to luxury categories. It is suitable for travellers who prefer easy access to shopping malls, dining options, and a well-connected urban environment.

Clarke Quay / Robertson Quay: This riverside area is popular for nightlife, restaurants, and café culture. It offers a balanced stay option for couples and travellers who want a central yet slightly quieter atmosphere compared to Marina Bay.

Sentosa Island: Sentosa is a resort area known for beaches, theme parks, and luxury hotels. It is commonly chosen for honeymoon stays and leisure-focused holidays, though it is located slightly away from the main city centre.

Practical Travel Tips for Singapore from Mumbai – SIM, Money, Transport & Safety

SIM card: Buy at Changi Airport for convenience (SGD 15–20) or at Mustafa Centre in Little India for better value (SGD 8–12). Indian carrier roaming packs (Airtel, Jio) now work in Singapore for Rs. 500–700 for 5–7 days — check your plan before departure.

Money: Carry SGD 100–150 cash daily for hawker centres and small vendors; use forex cards or credit cards for attractions, hotels, and malls. Exchange rupees to SGD at authorised money changers in Little India rather than at Changi Airport, where rates are consistently worse.

Power adapters: Singapore uses Type G plugs, the same as the UK. Mumbai travellers using Indian Type D/M plugs will need an adapter. Buy one before departure.

Dress code: Singapore is warm and informal, but temples, mosques and some heritage sites require covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf or shawl if temple visits are on the plan.

Safety: Singapore is consistently ranked among Asia's safest cities. Standard urban precautions apply, but pickpocketing is rare, and street crime is genuinely low.

We are from Chennai and recently completed a 10-day family trip to Singapore and Malaysia arranged by Pick Your Trail, and overall it was a wonderful experience. The planning, coordination, and support provided throughout the trip were exceptional. Both the Chennai team and the on-ground support team Hem Keshav, Anju, Adithyan, and Catherine were extremely responsive and helpful whenever needed, which made our journey smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable. The only minor issue we faced was during the hotel check-in at Furama Hotel in Malaysia, where there was a waiting time of around 30 minutes because the booking details did not include the booking ID. Apart from this small inconvenience, everything else was very well managed. Thank you to the entire team for making our trip memorable. We truly appreciate the excellent service and continuous support provided throughout the tour. We would strongly recommend Pick Your Trail to anyone planning an international vacation and look forward to booking future trips with your agency.

Heartfelt Thanks for Making Our Singapore Trip Special...From my very first call, Austin and Shabreen were incredibly reassuring. I still remember Austin telling me, Madam, safety is ensured you and your kids will be safe. Those words meant more to me than I can explain. They gave me the confidence and strength to go ahead with the trip. Two days before our departure, Adityan reached out and supported us throughout helping with navigation, checking in on us, and ensuring everything was seamless. Every detail, from airport pickups to hotel arrangements to our return drop-off, was handled perfectly. Traveling in a different country can feel overwhelming, but knowing there was a dedicated team supporting me was like having a strong pillar behind us. The WhatsApp travel support group was especially thoughtful quick responses, real-time assistance, and constant reassurance made a world of difference. Please extend my heartfelt thanks to Adityan, Austin, Shabreen, Cathereen, and the entire team who worked behind the scenes to make this trip smooth and memorable.
