Sorrento is often used as a base to visit the nearby Amalfi Coast. Travellers use either Buses or ferries to get to Amalfi and the other towns along the Amalfi Coast. Ferries are preferred more since they are much faster than buses. However, you can also take a SITA bus as it is also inexpensive and very comfortable. Further, you can observe the picturesque landscape along the Amalfi Coast during the journey.
Hiring a taxi is not recommended because you do not know the price until the end of the trip and the taximeter runs fast. Further, there is no proper public transport system like metros or railways since the Amalfi coast is a remote part of Italy. The best way of getting around would be to rent a car beforehand along with a driver.
There are Hop on/off buses that operate along the Amalfi Coast. You can avail a bus pass from tobacconists, newsstands, vending machines or at the train station in Sorrento/ Salerno. The pass becomes valid from the first ride and you can avail services of these three bus companies: SITA, EAVBUS, Circumvesuviana.
Renting a car allows you to explore Italy at your own pace. They are comparatively expensive vis-a-vis public transportation. Make sure to abide by the road rules and other safety measures applicable to Italy. Alternatively, you can hire a driver while renting the car.
