Annecy: The Pearl of the French Alps

Lake Annecy

The first and foremost attraction of the city is Lake Annecy. The lake and the picturesque background of the mountains are breathtaking. As one of the biggest lakes in France, the lakeside is the perfect spot to relax and have some quality time in the sun. Or you can rent a paddleboat and go around the lake with your friends or loved ones. If you are looking for adventure, you won’t be disappointed because you can paraglide from the many jump points and enjoy an aerial view of the whole town, or go underwater by scuba diving, water-skiing or even wakeboarding too, the options are plenty. You can also take a bike and roam around the lake as well. This beautiful lake itself has enough activities for an entire day.

Old Town

The history of Annecy is incised in the buildings of the Old town. Also, it is known as the “Venice of Alps” because of its canals which resemble the iconic canals of Venice. Take a walk along the canals to fully enjoy the city and its iconic buildings. The Château D’Annecy is one of the most important monuments in Annecy, this 12th-century castle is also a museum for historic artefacts. Annecy is also famous for its markets, mainly the Old Town Market which is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Also, the Farmer’s market where you can find the best quality fresh produce and authentic local cheese. The Farmer’s market is open from Tuesday to Saturday and is lined with colourful stalls, and is also a good place to test your bargaining skills as well.

Palais de I’lle

This unique and historical building is located on the Thiou Canal. It splits the canal and the water flowing on either side make it look like a ship. This building has served many purposes throughout the history of Annecy. The Palais used to be a prison, a coin mint and also a warehouse and currently it is a museum. Unsurprisingly this is one of the most visited buildings in town.

Gardens of Europe

The Gardens of Europe is the perfect picnic spot in Annecy. This lush green park is full of trees and flowers and is the best place to relax on a sunny afternoon. Known as the Jardins de l’Europe in French, it is simply the best place in town to wind down and just relax. It gives a magnificent view of the snowcapped mountains and the azure lake coupled with sounds of birds and slow wind, what more to say!

Annecy is also home to iconic chapels such as Basilique de la Visitation right on the outskirts of the Old Town. The chapel is open to public visit and it gives an outstanding view of the City. Eglise Notre-Dame de Lise, Eglise Saint-François de Sales etc are other important buildings which tell you about the story of the city.
