Know more about the Viharamahadevi Park

The Viharamahadevi Park is considered as the oldest and the biggest park in Colombo. It is situated near various historical places such as the National Museum, Town Hall, and the Colombo Public Library. This place has become the centre of attraction after the renovation works. This park was built in the reign of the British Colonial Government. The land was donated by Captain Charles Henry de Soysa in order to construct this park. It was initially named as the Victoria Park after Queen Victoria.

The park was used for different purposes during World War II. It holds pride in hosting the British Army and the 17th Brigade of the Australian Army. This park was also used as a cricket ground by the firs class team from 1927 to 1995. The famous match between the touring English team was hosted in this park during the 1930s. The Viharamahadevi Park was then remodelled after World War II into its current form. Post Independence, the park was given its current name, Viharamahadevi Park. This name was given in praise of Queen Viharamahadevi who was the mother of King Dutugemunu.

The gigantic statue of Buddha in the park is a spectacular identity for this park. This park also holds a children’s play area and numerous water fountains. Initially, during the start of the 20th century, the charm of the amusement started to fade. The park, lakes, play area, and the fountains were left without proper maintenance. Later, during the year 2013, the park regained its glow. It was when the Government decided to host the 23rd Commonwealth meeting in Colombo.
