Best Places to Stay in Japan for Honeymoon Couples

Choosing the right accommodation can elevate your Japan honeymoon from memorable to truly unforgettable. Here are some of the best places for honeymoon couples to stay during their trip.

Tokyo

As Japan's dynamic capital, Tokyo offers everything from ultra-luxury hotels with panoramic skyline views to stylish boutique properties tucked away in quieter neighbourhoods.

Best Romantic Areas to Stay

  • Shinjuku: Ideal for couples who enjoy vibrant nightlife, rooftop bars, fine dining, and spectacular city views.
  • Ginza: Perfect for luxury travellers seeking upscale shopping, elegant restaurants, and a sophisticated atmosphere.
  • Shibuya: A great choice for modern hotels, trendy cafés, and easy access to Tokyo's most iconic attractions.
  • Marunouchi: Located near the Imperial Palace, this district offers refined hotels, excellent dining, and peaceful evenings despite its central location.

Kyoto

Kyoto is widely regarded as Japan's most romantic city. With its centuries-old temples, lantern-lit streets, traditional tea houses, and preserved wooden architecture, it offers an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the country. For honeymoon couples, boutique ryokans and traditional machiya townhouses provide a more intimate experience than large hotels. Many properties feature tatami rooms, private gardens, and personalised hospitality that allow couples to immerse themselves in Japanese culture.

Best Romantic Areas to Stay

  • Gion: Famous for its historic streets, traditional architecture, and elegant evening ambience.
  • Higashiyama: Home to beautiful temples, quiet lanes, and some of Kyoto's most picturesque walking routes.
  • Central Kyoto: Ideal for travellers seeking a balance of convenience, luxury, and cultural attractions.

Hakone

No Japan honeymoon is complete without experiencing a traditional ryokan stay in Hakone. Located just a short journey from Tokyo, Hakone is known for its natural beauty, hot spring resorts, and spectacular views of Mount Fuji. The highlight for most couples is staying in a ryokan with a private onsen bath. Beyond relaxation, couples can enjoy scenic cruises on Lake Ashi, ride the Hakone Ropeway, and explore art museums nestled within the surrounding countryside.

Kanazawa – Japan's Hidden Honeymoon Gem

For couples looking to escape the crowds, Kanazawa is one of Japan's most underrated romantic destinations. Often overlooked in standard itineraries, the city offers a perfect blend of history, culture, exceptional cuisine, and traditional hospitality. Kanazawa is home to the stunning Kenroku-en Garden, one of Japan's most celebrated landscape gardens, as well as beautifully preserved historic districts where couples can stroll through traditional streets without the crowds often found in Kyoto.

Romantic Things to Do in Japan for Honeymoon Couples

A honeymoon in Japan offers a mix of cultural, scenic, and relaxing experiences. Couples can enjoy traditional stays, seasonal landscapes and immersive activities that combine romance with authentic Japanese culture.

Private Onsen Experience in a Traditional Ryokan

Staying in a ryokan and experiencing a private onsen is one of the most popular honeymoon activities in Japan. Couples can relax in natural hot spring baths, often surrounded by mountains, forests, or traditional gardens. Destinations such as Hakone and Kinosaki Onsen are well known for ryokan stays and hot spring culture. Many ryokans offer private onsen facilities, either included in the room or available as an optional booking.

Kaiseki Dining Experience for Couples

Kaiseki is a multi-course Japanese dining experience that highlights seasonal ingredients and precise presentation. Kyoto is one of the best places to experience kaiseki, both in traditional restaurants and ryokan dining settings. It is commonly chosen for special occasions such as honeymoons due to its refined and intimate atmosphere.

Cherry Blossom Picnic in Japan

During spring, cherry blossom viewing is a widely celebrated activity in Japan. Couples often enjoy a picnic under blooming sakura trees with local food and drinks. Popular locations include Ueno Park in Tokyo, Maruyama Park in Kyoto, and Philosopher’s Path. This seasonal experience is one of the most visited honeymoon activities in spring.

Evening Walk in Kyoto’s Gion District

The Gion district in Kyoto is known for its preserved traditional streets and wooden architecture. In the evening, lantern-lit streets create a calm and scenic atmosphere. Walking through Hanamikoji Street offers a glimpse of historic Kyoto culture, and visitors may occasionally see geiko or maiko heading to appointments. Respectful behaviour is expected in the area.

Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony Experience

A Japanese tea ceremony is a cultural experience focused on ritual, hospitality, and mindfulness. It is typically held in traditional tea houses or cultural centres. This activity is often included in honeymoon itineraries for couples interested in Japanese traditions and cultural experiences.

Winter Honeymoon Extension to Hokkaido

A winter extension to Hokkaido offers a different honeymoon experience, with snowy landscapes, hot springs, skiing, and seasonal seafood. Cities such as Sapporo and Hakodate are known for winter travel experiences and scenic views.

Local Transportation in Japan

Japan is widely regarded as having one of the world's most efficient, reliable, and traveller-friendly transportation systems. The country's extensive rail network, including the well-connected metro and train systems, provides easy access to popular attractions, shopping districts, and cultural landmarks.

  • Trains & Metro: Japan’s rail network is one of the most efficient in the world. Major cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are extensively connected by metro and local train lines, while the Shinkansen (bullet train) offers fast intercity travel. A journey from Tokyo to Kyoto takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.
  • IC Cards: Prepaid transportation cards such as Suica, Pasmo, and ICOCA can be used on most trains, metros, buses, and even at convenience stores, making travel seamless for tourists.
  • Taxis: Taxis are safe, clean, and reliable but generally more expensive than public transport. Fares start at around ¥500–700, with airport transfers typically costing between ¥6,000–25,000 (Rs. 3,500–14,500) depending on the city and distance.
  • Walking: Many popular districts, including Gion in Kyoto, Shibuya and Asakusa in Tokyo, and Dotonbori in Osaka, are best explored on foot. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as sightseeing often involves extensive walking through temples, gardens, shopping streets, and cultural neighbourhoods.
  • Buses: Local buses are particularly useful in cities like Kyoto, where many attractions are not directly connected by metro. They are affordable, punctual, and tourist-friendly.
  • Japan Rail Pass: For couples planning to visit multiple cities, the Japan Rail Pass can offer significant savings on long-distance train travel, depending on the itinerary and travel duration.

Japan Food Guide for Indian Honeymoon Couples

Japan's food culture is one of the best reasons to choose it as a honeymoon destination. A brief orientation for Indian couples:

Must-try dishes:

  • Ramen: Regional variations include Sapporo's miso, Tokyo's shoyu (soy), and Hakata's creamy tonkotsu. Ippudo and Ichiran are reliable national chains; local shops are almost always better.
  • Sushi and Omakase: An omakase dinner — where the chef decides the menu based on what arrived from the market that morning — is one of Japan's great food experiences. Budget ¥20,000–Rs. 50,000 (~Rs. 11,000–Rs. 27,500) per person for a proper sushi omakase.
  • Kaiseki: See above, the multi-course seasonal feast best experienced in Kyoto.
  • Tempura: Best eaten at the counter, watching the chef fry in real time.
  • Okonomiyaki: A savoury pancake (particularly good in Osaka) that is endlessly customisable.
  • Matcha desserts: Uji (near Kyoto) is Japan's primary matcha-producing region; the matcha parfaits at local cafes are not optional.

Vegetarian / Indian dietary needs:

  • Pure vegetarians should look for shojin ryori restaurants — Buddhist temple cuisine that is entirely plant-based.
  • Many dishes that look vegetarian (miso soup, certain noodle broths, pickled vegetables) use dashi made from bonito (fish). Ask specifically.
  • Indian restaurants exist in Tokyo (particularly Shinjuku and Shibuya) and Kyoto. Punjab Grill operates in Tokyo. Recommended app for vegetarian restaurant discovery: HappyCow.
  • Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) sell surprisingly good food and are perfectly acceptable dining for at least one meal a day.

Practical Tips for Indian Couples Travelling to Japan

Money and payments:

  • Japan is still partly cash-based, especially for smaller restaurants, temples, and rural areas. It’s recommended to carry around ¥20,000–¥40,000 (Rs. 11,000–Rs. 22,000) in cash for daily needs.
  • ATMs at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Japan Post Bank reliably accept international cards and are widely available.
  • IC cards like Suica or PASMO are essential for hassle-free travel on trains, buses, and even at vending machines and convenience stores. You can buy and recharge them at most major stations.
  • Forex cards often offer better exchange rates than airport currency exchanges and are widely accepted in Japan.

Connectivity:

  • A Japan eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi is highly recommended for seamless navigation and communication.
  • Popular eSIM providers (like Airalo or Holafly) offer affordable data plans; for example, 5–10GB plans typically range around Rs. 800–Rs. 1,500 depending on validity.

Cultural etiquette:

  • Always remove shoes before entering ryokan (traditional inns), tatami rooms, and certain temples or traditional restaurants.
  • Maintain quiet behaviour on trains, especially the Shinkansen, where phone calls are discouraged in passenger areas.
  • Tipping is not practised in Japan and may even be considered inappropriate.
  • Public dustbins are rare, so carrying a small bag for waste is expected and socially normal.

Power adapters:

  • Japan uses Type A plugs (two flat pins), 100V voltage.

I recently used Pickyourtrail (PYT) for a 10-day trip to Japan with 12 people, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. This was my second time using PYT in the last 2yrs. Their professionalism and attention to detail stood out from the initial planning stages to the final day. They customized an itinerary that perfectly balanced cultural exploration, modern attractions, and downtime. Special shout out to Surya who was knowledgeable, personable, and always went the extra mile to ensure we were comfortable and engaged even during the trip. From Day 1 when we connected he did his best to accommodate all our needs & managed the group expectations really well. The accommodations were top-notch, conveniently located, and catered to diverse preferences within our group. The seamless transportation arrangements allowed us to travel across cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagoya effortlessly. We missed a train and he was there trying to figure out things for us. App support is exceptional and were responding to all queries instantly. What truly impressed me was their responsiveness to last-minute adjustments and ability to handle a large group without missing a beat. This trip exceeded all our expectations, leaving us with unforgettable memories. It's been a week since we are back from the trip and still reminiscing about the good times we had. Highly recommend PYT for anyone planning a family/group adventure to Japan! Areas for Improvement: App is a bit glitchy at times and takes time to load. Chat Interface (Freshworks) platform can be a bit more polished but it works for now.

Japan Tour - Review Feedback for Pick Your Trail (PYT) Our family vacation in Japan, organized by Pick Your Trail (PYT), was truly exceptional. From the initial itinerary suggestions to the on-time assistance throughout our trip, PYT's team ensured everything ran smoothly. Japan itself is incredibly organized, making commuting via public transport comfortable even for first-time travelers like us. The adherence to schedules in Japan allowed us to manage our time effectively, even with a young child in tow. We visited in July 2024, and the weather was perfect, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 28 degrees Celsius, marking the beginning of summer in Japan. The experience of exploring Japan, while mainly self-guided, was enriching, albeit requiring preparation for queues and considerable walking distances. This aspect added to the adventure but might be challenging for families looking for a more relaxed pace over a short 6-7 day tour. Our 7-year-old was a trooper throughout, which significantly enhanced our enjoyment of the trip. Families traveling with younger children should be prepared for the physical demands of the itinerary. Overall, we highly recommend Pick Your Trail (PYT) for their expert suggestions and prompt responses, which made our journey hassle-free. Just keep in mind that self-exploration and careful planning are essential for making the most of your Japan experience with PYT.

We booked our Japan trip through PickYourTrail and overall, it was a well-organised and smooth experience. The itinerary planning, coordination, and execution were handled efficiently, which made our trip largely stress-free. The arrangements and logistics were good, and the team was available throughout the trip for support whenever we needed assistance, which was reassuring in a foreign country like Japan. That said, the stay could have been a little better in terms of quality and room space, and keeping a backup plan (in terms of transport availability) would have further made our experience better. A more local curated experience would also be preferred. Further, our special thanks to the team Dev, Chithranshu, Chandramauli, Prem, and others for their continuous support and responsiveness. Overall, it was a good experience, and I would recommend PickYourTrail for planning international trips, especially for first-time travelers to Japan.
