One of the famous and the largest Buddist temples in Penang, Malaysia is Kek Lok Si. It is visited by pilgrims from most of the Southeast Asian countries and other countries like Singapore, Philippines, etc. The seven-storied Pagoda of Rama VI which has 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha is the main highlight of the temple. Another highlighting feature of Kek Lok Si is the 30.2 meters bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of mercy.
Kek Lok Si Temple History
In 1890, The construction of the temple began and was completed in 1930, by Beow Lean, the chief monk of the Kuan Yin. The temple comprises monasteries, prayer halls, temples, gardens, and the construction of these iconic landmarks was funded by five Chinese business people of Penang. Magnificent images of Buddha, beautiful spiritual carvings, sculptures, and excellent paintings in the interior and exterior of the temple walls make Kek Lok Si temple one of the must-visit places and is recognized for Chineses culture and Buddha teachings, there is more to it such as rich heritage and a harmonious blend of Chinese rituals with Mahayana Buddhism.
How To Reach Kek Lok Si
By Air
Penang International Airport is the nearest airport to Kek Lok Si Temple, The airport is very well connected to other major cities in the world. The distance between Kek Lok Si and the airport can be covered in approximately 40 minutes as it is at a distance of around 16 kilometres.
By Bus
From Kuala Lumpur to Penang, there are bus services available on a daily basis which takes about 5 to 6 hours and covers a distance of approximately 358 kilometres. The bus service is available from Puduraya Bus Station in Kuala Lumpur. The buses come till Lebuhraya Thean Teik in Penang and from there Kek Lok Si is just a walkable distance.
By Cab/Taxi
You can even reach Penang by renting a car or taxi from Kuala Lumpur. Due to the construction of Penang Bridge, the road option has become the cheapest. The distance covered will be 358 kilometres (approximately) and the duration will be around 5 hours.
Entry Ticket for Kek Lok Si
The entry ticket for an adult entering Kek Lok Si temple is INR 34 (approx) and for a kid below 13 years it is INR 17 (approx).
Best Time To Visit Kek Lok Si
One can visit the temple anytime during the year. The opening hours of Kek Lok Si Temple are from 9 am to 6 pm for the general public and it is open from Monday to Sunday. The best time to visit Kek Lok Si is during the Chinese New Year witnessing colourful lightings and lanterns, and a lively atmosphere. It is recommended to visit the Chinese New Year festival which is celebrated with enthusiasm continuously for a period of 30 days.
