How to reach Dawki in Meghalaya?
By Road
Dawki is roughly located about 90 kilometres from Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya. The route to Dawki is filled with beautiful trees, rivulets and deep forests. You can either self drive yourself to Dawki or board a private or public bus that takes you here.
By Rail
Train travels can be good and fun when travelling with the right people. If you planning to reach Dawki to train, book your tickets Guwahati, Assam. The only closest train station to Dawki is the Guwahati station. From there, it is about a 200-kilometre drive. You can either board the public or private buses that run through Dawki or hire a cab.
By Air
Want to travel fast and easy? Pick flights. Though there are no airports in Dawki, the closes airport is the Guwahati Airport. There are many direct flights to Guwahati from different parts of India and be easily booked. From there, it is another two and a half hours drive to reach Dawki. Or, you can also avail helicopter service and reach to Shillong. From Shillong, you can reach Dawki by cab or a bus.

1. Umngot River
Umngot is Dawki is a crystal clear river. Also called as the Wah Umngot, the river is so transparent that you could see the stones and pebbles inside this river. During the month of September is when the water much clearer than ever. You can either take swim where the water is cold throughout the year or go on a boat ride and take a peek inside the colourful marine life of the river. The fare to go on a boat ride is somewhere between Rs 400 to Rs 500 per person. Not just the clear water, you can also view mighty Bangladesh’s border from Dawki River.
2. Byrdaw Falls
Located next Dawki is the village named Pomshutia village. The village is famous for its beautiful waterfall called the Byrdaw falls, which is one of the best places to visit in Meghalaya. Best time to visit the falls would be during the monsoon season when the weather is equally beautiful as the waterfall. The surroundings of the waterfall become much greener and alive after getting soaked in the monsoon rain. One has to trek for at least two kilometres from Pomshutia village to reach the waterfall. Once there, take a deep breath and admire the beauty of nature. This beautiful waterfall can be visited anytime between 8 AM – 5 PM.
3. Jaflong Zero Point
Jaflong Zero Point is located alongside the borders of India and Bangladesh. The Zero point is situated about one kilometre away from the Dawki market. Known for its stone accumulation, it is from here the Dawki river flows into Bangladesh as well. Home to Khasi tribes, the place has got crystal clear water with pebbles here too. Also, there is always an Indian Security Guard who keeps an eye over the border of India and Bangladesh. The Zero point is open to the public between 8 AM – 4 PM and can be entered at zero cost.
4. Mawshun Cave
Mawshun caves are one of the famous and most crowded attractions near the Dawki village. Situated in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, the caves are located outside the Mawshun village. Providing a calm atmosphere, the cave has cute little ponds that are formed due to flow water. Reaching this cave is not easy. One has to walk on rough paths and rocks for about three to five odd minutes to reach the entrance of this cave. With a tricky terrain, the cave gets adventurous as it goes. The path gets narrower and is filled with stalagmite making it one of the beautiful caves in Meghalaya. Tourists are welcome here every day throughout the week.
5. Borhill Falls
Known as Burhill or Borhill falls, is one of the top attractions in Meghalaya. Located at the outskirts near the national border is this enchanting waterfall that will surely make your day with just a look. The water from this waterfall flows through the borders of India and then glides under the Bangladesh border. This waterfall is also called as the Bophill falls or the Pangthumai falls by the locals.
Where to eat at Dawki?
Located on an elevated hill, there are not many restaurants in Dawki. Try tasting the delightful Meghalayan cuisine at the Dhabas on the way to Dawki from Shillong. The Dhabas here serve some of the best ming ogling dishes. While in Meghalaya, make sure you try out their famous delicacies like – Dohneiihong, Makham-Bitchi, Jadoh and Jhur Sideh.
