About the Jaipur Literature Festival

The Jaipur Literature Festival, or JLF, is an annual literary festival that is held every January in the Indian city of Jaipur. It was established in the year 2006. It is the largest free literary festival in the world. The Diggi Palace Hotel serves as the festival ‘s main venue, with sessions held in the Audience Hall and throughout the Diggi Palace gardens in the centre of town. The directors of the festival are the writers Namita Gokhale and William Dalrymple and are produced by Teamwork Arts’ Sanjoy Roy. Surina Narula is the literature festival ‘s founding sponsor and festival advisor.

The Festival is an initiative of the Jaipur Virasat Foundation (JVF), founded by Faith Singh, originally as a segment of the International Jaipur Heritage Festival in 2006, and developed into a freelance literature festival that was held on its own in 2008. Vinod Joshi, the Community Director of JVF is his regional adviser. All festival events are free and not ticketed.

All you need to do for that is to log in to the festival’s official website and register yourself. The hosts said that nearly 80% of the audience is below 30 years of age, which is made up of more than four to five thousand people. He also said the JLF platform offers an opportunity to witness some of the biggest international and national awards winners such as the Pulitzer Prize, Booker Prize, Noble Prize and Sahitya Akademi. “You can just walk in and have your life enhanced by this extraordinary phenomenon, whether you’re a rickshaw driver or the CEO of a major firm,” he added.

Preview

As part of the preview session, Namita Gokhale talked about how the International editions of the Jaipur Literature Festival served as a national platform for a wide range of writers – from grassroots talent to strong and popular writers.

History

Only 100 participants attended JLF, starting in 2006 with only a limited number of authors including Namita Gokhale, Shobha de, William Dalrymple, and 15 others. Over the years, the literary extravaganza has grown in significance and fame with numerous prestigious names from different fields taking part in the festival adding to its huge success.

This journey isn’t without difficulties though. The Jaipur Literature Festival entered into controversy in 2012 when Salman Rushdie cancelled his all-India tour over threats of assassination with the release of Satanic Verses among the others that created the festival ‘s problems. However, in 2015, the festival stood in its glory and set out on a new path with the organization of the festival in Colorado, USA, and Southbank, London.

Nowadays, this once-small festival has spread its wings in many different locations and made its mark as “the largest free literary festival in the world,” as The Mail calls.
