The Thean Hou Temple near Jalan Syed, one of the oldest temples in South East Asia, is situated here in Kuala Lumpur. Last but not the least the world-famous Vivekananda Ashram along Jalan Tun Sambanthan, is also situated within these borders. Brickfields History
A Century and half earlier Brickfields was a town full of wooden houses and thatched roofs. A huge fire explosion occurred and destroyed the whole town in 1880, post which all the construction of houses was done using bricks and tiles. There is a gigantic brickyard within Little India constructed by an entrepreneur by the name Yap Ah Loy, which produced materials to build early Malaysia. Later on the Britishers constructed their Malayan Railways in that area. The labourers were migrated from India and Srilanka, and they never left Malaysia.
Little India
Brickfields means many things to different people. Be it a strong wedge of Indian Culture, a bewildering collection of various worship houses, famous tourist spot for travellers and shelter for bling massage centres, its a soul of its own. Kuala Lumpur’s Little India was originally situated in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman until 2009 when it was moved to Brickfields.
The nearby markets on the street Jalan Tun Sambanthan are bombarded with sight, smell and tastes of India. There are also a lot of people who continue to wear the traditional clothes such as Sarees and jewels, eat food on the banana leaves and apply Henna on their hands and legs during occasions. The most famous of all is the ee-storied Indian Bazaar where you can flaunt your bargaining skills. The best view of these places is in the evening when the whole place lights up, bringing more colour and soul to the street of Little India.
